Calcium Nitrate Calcium Nitrate, Ca(NO 3)2, is used mainly as fertilizers. Calcium nitrate is ionic bonded, white grainy crystals (Growforce). Calcium Nitrate is used in water waste treatments, concrete, cooling baths, heat storage, and explosives (Material Safety Data Sheet). Calcium nitrate is water soluble. Calcium nitrate is a strong oxidizing agent, a substance that tends to chemically combine with oxygen reducing or gaining electrons (The Fertilizer Encyclopedia). Calcium Nitrate is not flammable but acts as a catalyst, a substance that escalates the rate of a reaction (Hydroponic Food Production). Contact with eyes and skin may cause mild irritation. If inhaled or ingested, seek immediate medical attention. Avoid inhaling substance and accidental spills (Fertilizer Manual). Calcium Nitrate absorbs moisture from the air to produce Calcium Nitrate; nitric acid is treated with limestone. Calcium nitrate may also be prepared with an aqueous solution, containing water, of Calcium hydroxide and Ammonium Nitrate. Also known as Norwegian Saltpeter, Calcium Nitrate is first synthetic nitrogen fertilizer compound to be produced and manufactured. 170,000 tons of Calcium Nitrate was produced per year as of 1978 for applications in fertilizer. The fertilizer is widely known in the greenhouse and hydroponic, aquaculture trades. In waste water pre- conditioning, Calcium Nitrate is used to prevent odor emission. The metabolism for sulfates stops in the presence Calcium Nitrate and prevents formation of Hydrogen Sulphide or sewer gas.

Charmaine Lace September 27, 2013 Webb 4th period The anhydrous, containing no water, Calcium Nitrates dissolution is vastly endothermic, a reaction that requires the absorbing of heat. Together with Potassium and Sodium Nitrate, Calcium Nitrate absorbs and stores energy in solar power plants. Calcium Nitrate has an average melting point of 561C with an average density of 2.5g/cm3. Heating Calcium Nitrate may release toxic oxides of nitrogen. This inorganic compound is commonly found as a tetrahydrate, a molecule forming a hydrate by the surrounding of four molecules of water. Nitric acid is extracted from the air and reacts with limestone to form Calcium Nitrate. Calcium Nitrate is a double growth energy fertilizer because both the Calcium and the Nitrates cause growth in plants. Essentially, Calcium Nitrate is derived from the atmospheric nitrogen and limestone. Calcium Nitrate has nice properties. It is used essentially for celery, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, lettuce, and other crops. Although Calcium Nitrate is very beneficial as a fertilizer, it pulls moisture into products causing them to be moist. Aside from the complications, Calcium nitrate extracts moisture from the air into the soil to increase the moisture content. Calcium nitrate contains the two basic elements of nourishment that plants need which are calcium, nitrogen, and Nitrate. There are many advantages to using Calcium Nitrate as a fertilizer. Calcium Nitrate increases quality and provides resistance to diseases. Calcium Nitrate does not steam, burn, or wash. The storage life of fruits is extended due to the use of Calcium Nitrate. Calcium nitrate is substantially a very useful product.
