Skin Fair: Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers

Session One: 9 A.M. – 11 A.M. Session Two: 12 Noon- 4:15 P.M.

Session One: An interactive experience designed to stimulate teamwork as basic


principles of skin care and the prevention of pressure ulcers is explored. Bathing
Without A Battle will be presented during this session. CNAs are encouraged to
attend with their Administrators, DONs, and nurse managers.

Objectives :
Learn how teamwork is used to prevent pressure ulcers
Apply concepts of person directed care to basic skin care
Experience importance of pressure ulcer prevention first hand

Session Two: This session will cover pressure ulcer staging, the latest in dressings, wound
bed preparation, and essential wound management from care to documentation. We will also
simulate a dressing change.

Objectives:
Understand basics of NPUAP pressure ulcer staging system
Recognize appropriate dressing selection based upon wound presentation
Understand clinical elements of wound bed preparation
Understand essential components of wound documentation

Presenters:
Alexis Roam, BSN, RN
Roam started her career as a CNA and has practiced as a DON, MDS Coordinator, and charge nurse.
She has also taught LPN and CNA programs preparing students to meet the challenges of geriatric care.
She currently works for Primaris, Missouri’s Quality Improvement Organization, helping providers im-
prove the quality of care and life for residents.

JoAnnis Pierce RN, BSN, CRNI, CWS, FACCWS


Pierce has over 20 years of nursing experience in a variety of settings with an emphasis on caring for pa-
tients with wounds and providing education to healthcare professionals. She is currently a clinical specialist
with American Medical Technologies, serving Long Term Care Facilities, and assisting nurses in perform-
ing wound evaluations and implementing treatment protocols. She is responsible for staff education and
training and is a Wound Care Specialist with experience assisting in the development of wound care proto-
cols, documentation requirements, quality improvement data collection and cost reduction techniques to
facilities.
The Skin Care Fair is free to attend, however a fee will be applied to those seeking
CEU’s. Please pre-register with MHCA.
Continuing Education Credits
Administrators: 6.0 Patient Care Hours of continuing education have been requested from the Missouri Board of Nursing Home
Administrators. Missouri Health Care Association is an approved training agency [TA-002-909].
