Hypnosis is an extremely powerful tool that can make big changes in your life when used properly. You may own a set of spanners but they are useless to fix your car unless you have an understanding of mechanics and know what you are doing. Now you can learn all the secrets of self-hypnosis and apply simple techniques to build your mind power. Become more positive and achieve success and personal goals with great ease. An "altered state" of consciousness occurs when you process information outside of your primary representational system. Going into hypnosis involves turning your attention away from external experience and directing it internally. Understanding by the conscious mind is not necessary for change. Let's consider these ideas one at a time.

Representational Systems and Altered States We process information (that is, we think) in pictures, sounds and feelings. In Neuro Linguistic Programming and self-hypnosis, these sensory modalities are referred to as representational systems. The Visual System - The external things we see and the internal images that we create. This includes remembered images ("What does the White House look like?"), constructed images ("What would it look like if it were painted with red and yellow stripes?"), as well as "live" things we see about us. The Auditory System - The external things we hear, the internal sounds that we create. This includes remembered words or sounds, imagined words or sounds, "Self Talk", etc. as well as all of the "live" sounds around us. The Kinaesthetic System - The things we feel. These can be actual physical sensations or imagined ones. Can you imagine being on a beach and feeling sand between you toes? Most of us have developed greater proficiency with one or the other of our representational systems though we each use all three of them. Since this is the case, an individual who "thinks" in images wouldn't experience an altered state of consciousness simply by visualising. However, if that same individual were to experience a preponderance of feelings or sensations, this would be unusual - an alteration of their state of consciousness. When we talk about altered states, what we're really referring to is processing information in a different manner than usual. Focused Attention Stereotypical images of hypnotists holding watches or other fixation devices for clients to stare at are the result of this understanding about hypnosis. If you've ever had the experience of becoming so involved in television or a piece of music or a book, you've experienced this "naturally occurring hypnotic state". Self-hypnosis is "Going Inside" The experience of hypnosis is typically an inwardly focused one in which we move away from the environment around us and turn our attention inward. You can Trust your Unconscious Mind You unconscious mind is "chock full" of resources. In your lifetime of experience, it has learned a great deal and can apply that learning for you in hypnosis. Your conscious mind can only process so much information at one time. Your unconscious mind is not so limited. It can think holographically and is capable of finding better solutions for you than your conscious mind. This process is designed to take full advantage of the power and resourcefulness of your unconscious mind. Understanding by the conscious mind is not necessary for change In many self-hypnosis procedures, the participants enter a trance and then give themselves suggestions. It seems to me that if my conscious mind knew what to do about the issues that I'm using self-hypnosis for, then there wouldn't be a need for hypnosis in the first place. In fact, it's often the case that our conscious mind gets in the way.

It is the conscious mind that says "I can't ..." or "I don't know how to ..." or "I'm not smart enough ... ". Some people are surprised to hear this, but consider that if you hear your "self talk" then it isn't unconscious. The process described below is designed to keep the conscious mind occupied so that it won't interfere while your unconscious mind is doing the work. How to use the programs The ideal time to use the audio program is when you have half an hour free to put your feet up and treat yourself to a little bit of pure relaxation! Never use hypnotic products whilst driving operating machinery or doing anything that requires you attention. More about these powerful programs How many times have you wished you were different ... slimmer, healthier, happier, friendlier, self-confident, more creative, wealthier or free from bad habits such as smoking or drinking? If you have wished for this change, why haven't you achieved it? After all, common sense tells us that if you eat less, you'll lose weight; and to make friends, you must be interested in other people. As for smoking and drinking, simply apply will-power ... just say, "NO!" If it were only as easy as that! Unfortunately, there is a force in the human mind that thwarts our will power. The existence of such a force has been talked about for thousands of years, but it was not until the 19th century that Dr. Sigmund Freud was able to prove what others had only suspected ... the existence of a "second mind." This second mind, or "subconscious," as Freud called it, holds absolute control over much of our lives, our actions, habits, likes, dislikes, health, success and failure. "More complex than a modern computer." The subconscious is a magnificent work of the universe - more complex than a modern computer - and hundreds of times more efficient. It oversees the operation of our whole body, right down to each individual cell. Psychologists tell us the subconscious may account for as much as 90-95 percent of our brainpower. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to reach the subconscious by using reason. It resists any direct efforts on the part of conscious mind to control it. A good example of this uncooperative behaviour is often apparent when we try to use our memory. Memory is in the realm of the subconscious, which has stored away in its endless files, everything we have seen, heard or sensed since the moment we were born. However, it is willing to release only a tiny fraction of these stored memories to the conscious mind. Sometimes, it refuses even this tiny bit! You've experienced this problem, I'm sure, you try to recall a word, a number, or a name. It's right on the tip of your tongue, but the harder you try to remember, the further it retreats into the inaccessible reaches of your subconscious. So, you finally give up. You stop trying to coax it out. You turn your thoughts to other things and what happens? The elusive information pops unexpectedly into your conscious mind. Obviously, the subconscious doesn't respond well to commands, coaxing, or concentration. It prefers the oblique approach.

Although its capability is unlimited, the subconscious lacks one important attribute of the conscious mind; it is unable to make judgments. It cannot distinguish between right and wrong, good and bad, true and false. When programmed, the subconscious mind creates automatically according to the information it has received. When your subconscious programming is positive, you life is positive. When your subconscious programming is negative, your life is negative. If your mind is filled with fears, anger, jealousy, hate, pain, and limitations of every description, so is your life. If your mind is filled with joy, love, and light, your life is pleasurable, peaceful and prosperous. It is your mind and you are responsible for programming it. Negative programming is why we eat too much when our thinking mind tells us to reduce. Our parents made us clean up the plate, and we continue to smoke when we know we should stop. As teenagers, we thought smoking was sophisticated. That is why we lose friends, argue, develop ulcers, have high blood pressure, lie awake, have sexual problems, underachieve, get fired, and fail to achieve the success we deserve.

Hypnosis: There are several different depths of hypnosis, which it is possible for everyone to enter. There are five main states of hypnosis and these are: THE WAKING STATE (HYPNOIDAL STATE) This is the initial stage of hypnosis that begins the moment you ask them to close their eyelids together. It is a lovely lazy state that we all drift into prior to sleep or, although fully conscious, just before we wake up. Many volunteers will be in the hypnoidal state, but that's OK, as they will be relaxed enough to react to your suggestions, to let the ego be subdued. THE LIGHT TRANCE (LETHARGIC) This is the next level of hypnosis, and in this light trance, as the title suggests, the subjects feel quite lethargic. A flickering of the eyelids is often noticed or a movement of the eyeballs under the lids (known as R.E.M.'s , Rapid Eye Movements). This merely shows that the subject is entering a deeper level of trance. When the subject is in a light trance, it is easy to work with them for the same reasons as when they are in the waking state. THE MEDIUM STATE (CATALEPTIC TRANCE) In this state, the person feels detached from their surroundings and very often has a hazy recollection of events when the hypnotic state is ended. This state causes no problems, as the subject will still respond to your suggestions. In fact, for information purposes, this is the state of trance you'd want a subject in to make their body rigid and support them like a plank of wood across the back of two chairs not that this would ever be recommended. DEEP STATE (SOMNAMBULSTIC) This state is an absolute nightmare for you in your role as a hypnotist performing hypnosis on others! The reason for this being, in this state, they will be enjoying hypnosis so much, that they will want to be left alone and will not want to participate. If any subject should enter this state, then they should be awoken as soon as possible! Dont worry, you wont achieve such a deep hypnotic state using selfhypnosis. You will find that the term hypnosis is usually spit into 3 categories: 1. Self-hypnosis 2. Hypnotherapy 3. Stage hypnosis

Hypnotic Induction Procedure Preparation A time when you are going to practise self-hypnosis is vitally important, so the first thing you want to do is develop one. If you don't have a schedule, what you are saying is that you will practice when you have time. That never works. Decide on a time when you will, on a regularly recurring basis, practice. The time you pick, and the frequency of practice you plan on, should be realistic. Remember, you want these to be times and places you can stick with once you have made the commitment to do it. Now, you are in all likelihood an exceptional person, one who can do many things a lot of other people cannot do. How do I know this? Because over the years I have found that it is mainly only exceptional people who seek out and learn to use self-hypnosis. I also know the more exceptional you are, the more you need a schedule. I don't know why that is, it just is. There are exceptions, of course, but for the most part everyone who is well organized and easily scheduled is also boring, plodding and unimaginative. Incapable of anything except the most mundane activities. The flip side of this is that the more productive and capable you are, the more you must have a schedule to get everything in. You probably already know this. But if you don't, pay attention and Develop a schedule! The more specific and realistic your schedule, the better the chances that you will succeed. If you leave the scheduling of self-hypnosis practice to when ever you can, you will practice whenever you get a chance and that won't last long. To develop your schedule, begin by picking a good time to practice. You should choose a part of your day when you are at your best. If you wait to practice until after you get home from a hard day at work, you might only practice going to sleep. Self-hypnosis practice is best if practiced when you are reasonably alert. If morning is that time for you, if you wake up alert and rested first thing in the morning, practice then, before getting out of bed. Choice of this time of day must take into account whether or not you will be disturbed by spouse, lover, kids, pets, etc. On the other had, if you have a hard time getting to sleep at night, try practicing in bed just before going to sleep. Your choice of practice time should also take into consideration the likelihood of being disturbed. Choose a time when you are not likely to be interrupted. If you have trouble staying awake, that is, if you keep falling asleep when you try to practice no matter when you do it, try practicing while sitting up. Keep making yourself progressively less comfortable during your practice until you can practice without going to sleep. When you know more about suggestion you will be able to use it to help keep from falling asleep while you practice. We will get to the suggestion section later, but don't jump over there just yet. Most people find it best to practice lying down, in a comfortable position, with as few distractions as possible. If you are bothered by noise while you practice you can try to mask out the noise with some other source of sound. A relaxation CD of some kind.

The best way to deal with unwelcome noise while practicing is to have a masking sound, but one that is not irritating. It would be best of course if it was one that also promoted good hypnotic states. I developed just such a CD several years ago because I needed something to use when I was conducting group inductions in noisy settings. We also use the CD in hypnotherapy training and you can order this CD for 16 by calling 0870 321 75337 and asking for the hypnotherapy background music CD. Later, when you have become more practiced at self-hypnosis, you will be able to practice in the middle of an Ozzy Ozbourne concert. Relaxation The second step, after the initial preparation, is to get relaxed. You have to slow down the juices, get your mind slowed down, and begin to get the muscles of your body relaxed, drained of tension. Begin by taking a few deep breaths. Controlled breathing is helpful if you know how, that is, if you have been instructed in deep-breathing techniques through Yoga or some other transcendental form of practice. If not, just inhale deeply a few times, slowly, hold it momentarily, then exhale slowly. Imagine each time you exhale that you are blowing out your tensions, that breathing out is purging your body of tension. Start the relaxation at the top of your head and think your way down your body, letting go of the tension in each muscle group as you slowly work yourself downwards. Imagine each muscle becoming limp, lazy and completely relaxed. Take your time. This is not something you want to rush. Later when you are more proficient you will be able to relax more quickly, but if you have not been practicing deep relaxationif this is your first go at itgive yourself plenty of time to achieve a deeper state of relaxation. Gradually move all the way down your body. Include and end with the muscles of your feet and toes. A very popular method of deep relaxation is the tensing and releasing method. The discharge of tension is relieved by tensing the muscles, then releasing them. The time involved for the relaxation phase of your self-hypnosis induction can vary from half an hour to just a few seconds. It is an important part of the induction and should not be slighted. As you get better and your skill increases you will recognize deeply relaxed states, and you will be able to achieve them in a surprisingly short time. But as a beginner, take your time. It will be time well spent.

Deepening Procedures Once you have completed the relaxation phase of your self-hypnosis induction procedure, you can begin to deepen the relaxed state. At some time between the deep relaxation and the deepening procedures you will move into a hypnotic state. You probably won't know it, especially as a beginner, but it will happen sooner or later. One of the first hurdles a beginner must get over is the compulsion to "watch for it." That is, you will keep waiting for hypnosis to happen, for some change in your awareness or the way you feel that will say to you, "You're hypnotized." This will definitely get in your way if you don't get it out of your mind. For one thing, it won't happen. Going into hypnotic states is in this respect similar to going to sleep. If you try to catch yourself going to sleep, if you try to be aware of the precise instant in which you actually go to sleep, that activity will keep you awake. If and when you finally do get to sleep you will not know it. You will know when you awaken that you were asleep, but you have to wake up to know it. In this same way you will not know when you go into a hypnotic state. Later, when you are getting good hypnotic depth during your practice, you will know you were in a hypnotic state, but you will not be aware of when you go into it. So do not watch for it. Just do your practice and let things develop as they will. Alright, even though I say that, I know what will really happen, I know you are still going to watch yourself. It is unfortunate, but it is only human. Sometimes we just can't help ourselves. You will be distracted by every little nuance in your mental state, waiting to see what happens to you as you go through the procedure. Like I said, it is inevitable because it is natural. Just keep in mind that you are probably not going to be aware of anything except the relaxation, which is very pleasant, and perhaps a slightly "distanced" sense of being removed from the cares of the day. Try to be as unconcerned about it as you can. It is best to measure your achievement and whether or not you were in hypnosis by the results of your suggestions, not by how you feel while you are practicing. One of the most popular deepening procedures is the count-down technique. Hollywood also likes this one. That is why you see it in so many movies. That and the swinging watch! To use the count-down technique you simply start counting downward from, say, 100, imagining that you are drifting deeper with each count. Other images and thoughts will probably intrude themselves as you count. That is natural. Just gently brush them aside and then continue with your counting. The speed with which you count down should be natural; not too fast, not too slow. For most people this means counting at a rate of about one count for each two or three seconds. Do it at a rate that feels comfortable and relaxed to you. Some people like to tie the count with their breathing. As they drift deeper their breathing slows down, so their counting also slows down. Don't count out aloud, just think your way down the count. You want to avoid as much physical involvement and movement as possible.

10

Another popular method is to float down as if you were floating down to earth from a very high point. You can combine this with counting to increase the sense of downwardness. Don't bother with this method if you are afraid of heights or if it reminds you of anything you find unpleasant, such as flying, diving, and so on. Elevators and other metaphors are also helpful to some people. You can imagine, for example, that you are going downward in your own private, very comfortable elevator, and that you will be in your hypnotic state when you get to the bottom. With this procedure it is generally a good idea not to get too far into the literal nature of an elevator. For example, don't go down to the basement unless you just happen to have a particular fondness for basements. Just think of a pleasant state of mind awaiting you as the counterthe floor indicatorcounts downward from the 100th floor. Feel free to experiment with this concept. The basic idea is to use some imaginative vehicle to get to a deeper level. For most people, that is. A few people are not as comfortable with the concept of going deeper, and they respond better to concepts of going up. Either way, use the metaphor that works best for you. It usually does work well, but you can make an induction tape to try if you like. It is better to follow an approved script if you are going to try this.

11

An approved Self-hypnosis script "I am starting my self-hypnosis session now. From now until I say 'wake up' I will get more and more relaxed and focused within myself. Suggestions I give myself will be effective, but this will apply to only those suggestions I give myself and which I consciously want to be effective. "As I close my eyes and begin to drift downward, I can imagine a blanket covering my feet. Every part of my body covered by the blanket will become completely relaxed. My feet are becoming deeply relaxed. All of the muscles in my feet are becoming limp and relaxed. "Now the blanket is moving up to my knees. Every muscle and tendon in my body from my knees down is getting more and more relaxed. All tension is flowing out of this area, leaving all the muscles limp and loose. "Now the blanket is moving slowly up to my waist. As it moves upward everything is becoming relaxed. As it reaches my waist I can hardly feel anything from there down. All the muscles in my hips, lower abdomen, legs and feet are becoming progressively more and more relaxed. "All cares are flowing out of my mind. If a thought does intrude I will just gently let it go away. I am thinking only of relaxing and letting go of all tension. All of my muscles are becoming more and more relaxed, and I am feeling pleasantly drowsy. I will not go to sleep, but I am feeling so carefree and relaxed, sinking further and further into myself with no cares or worries. Now the blanket is moving upward, moving slowly over my stomach, inching up over my chest, stopping at my shoulders. All of the muscles in my stomach and back are letting go, becoming totally and completely relaxed. The relaxation is like a warmness, spreading to every place covered by the blanket. The muscles in my chest and arms are getting more and more limp. I could move if I really had to, but I am becoming so comfortably limp and relaxed I don't want to move. I am still and relaxed, drifting deeper and deeper into a pleasant state of dreamy relaxation. "Now the warmth and relaxation are slowly moving upward from my shoulders. The blanket is remaining there, but the relaxation is gently moving upward in my neck. All muscles in my neck are becoming limp and flaccid. I can see them in my mind's eye, becoming limp and loose. All cares and worries are floating away as I drift deeper and deeper into my relaxation. "Now the relaxation is spreading into my mouth and jaw muscles. My tongue is limp, resting in my mouth with no need to be tense. I may briefly have more saliva in my mouth, but that will go away shortly. Now my cheeks and eyes are relaxing. I could open my eyes if I wanted to, but unless I need to, it would be too much work. It would take too much effort to open my eyes. I am drifting pleasantly downward, becoming more and more relaxed. "The muscles in my forehead are becoming more and more relaxed. I can imagine them, like rubber bands across my forehead, becoming limp and floppy. Deeper and deeper, relaxing more and more. From the tips of my toes to the top of my head, I am becoming more and more relaxed, drifting downward, deeper and deeper.

12

"Now I am going to count down from twenty-five. As I count down I will continue to drift down, pleasantly going deeper and deeper into the relaxation. I will get drowsy and deeply relaxed, but I will not actually go to sleep. I will simply drift deeper and deeper into my self-hypnotic state of deeply relaxed awareness. By the time I reach zero I will be in a very pleasant, sleep-like state. I will still be able to direct my thoughts, and I could rouse myself immediately if I needed to, but unless I really need to, I will drift deeper and deeper into the relaxation. "Starting down now . . . twenty-five . . . twenty-four . . . twenty-three . . . twenty-two . . . drifting deeper and deeper with each count . . . twenty-one . . . twenty . . . feeling drowsier and drowsier, yet still awake . . . nineteen . . . eighteen . . . seventeen . . . floating gently downward with each count . . . sixteen . . . fifteen . . . fourteen . . . drifting, drowsy . . . thirteen . . . twelve . . . eleven . . . ten . . . more than half-way down, drifting deeper and deeper with each count . . . nine . . . eight . . . seven . . . six . . . five . . . feeling so relaxed . . . four . . . becoming more and more relaxed and drowsy . . . three . . two . . . one . . . zero. Breathing pleasantly, slowly, drifting deeper and deeper with each breath. "As I continue to be deeply relaxed, and to become even more relaxed, I. am thinking about my suggestions.

[At this point insert your suggestions.]

"All of the suggestions I have given myself will be effective because they are right for me and it is good that I should achieve them. All of the directions I have given myself are good for me and I will follow them. "Each time I practice self-hypnosis I will become better and better at it. I will be able to relax deeper and deeper in less time with each practice. "Now, as I count to three, I am going to slowly, gradually, pleasantly wake up. I will return to my normal, waking state, except for the suggested changes. Now, starting up, . . . one . . . becoming more alert . . . two, getting ready to wake up . . . three, wake up."

13

Placing Hypnotic Suggestions Hypnosis without suggestion is like a ship without a rudder . . . a computer without an operating system . . . a Ferrari without a steering wheel . . . Get the picture? The purpose of developing a hypnotic state is to prepare your subconscious mind to receive instructions. That is the WHOLE purpose of hypnosis! The instruction you give your subconscious mind is called "suggestion." Several instructions would be several "suggestions." You MUST have suggestion to make hypnosis work for you. Otherwise you won't get much in the way of results. At least, not the ones you want. And not just any old suggestions will do. It is best to formulate and apply suggestions that are tailored specifically for you and your subconscious needs. And your suggestions must conform to the ways the subconscious mind works. Correct, effective suggestion formulation and application is pretty easy once you know a handful of ground rules. But don't try it without knowing the rules. That can actually make things worse! Autosuggestion, often referred to as simply suggestion, refers to the giving of suggestions to oneself. We are all constantly doing that - giving ourselves suggestions - whether we are aware of it or not. The information on this tape will help you become more aware of both positive and negative autosuggestions. Suggestions from external sources are also important . . . they go on all the time and must be controlled if you are to achieve your goals. Always keep your suggestions positive and simple. You may also find it beneficial to write your suggestions out on plain white paper 3 times before you start your relaxation process. Example suggestions. I lose weight quickly and easily My goal weight is easy to achive I find it easy to say no to pastries and buiscuits Remember, The quality of your suggestions will determine the success of your hypnotic process.

14

Measuring Your Depth of Trance Results from suggestions are the best way to gauge how deeply you are going during your self-hypnosis practice. If your suggestions are working and you are getting results of the kind you expect, then you are achieving plenty of depth in your self-hypnotic trance. Having said that, here is a fun method for getting a subjective reading of how deep you are getting in your practice. (There are numerous tests to measure the state of hetero-hypnotic states, but most of them will not work with selfhypnosis because the action required to apply the measurements destroys the hypnotic state.) This method will not provide valid comparisons of the states between people, but it will give you a good idea of how you are doing relative to your own depth. That is, you can use it to compare your own depth from one session to another. Here is how it works. When you are at the deepest point in your practice, imagine the face of a gauge with a pointer and several numbers. The actual make-upcircular, vertical, horizontal, etc.is unimportant. It also does not matter how many numbers there are on your gauge. You should probably stick to a scale something like, say, zero to 10. You could, of course, just imagine the pointer going to any number you wanted but that would not tell you anything. You have to let yourself imagine the face of the dial with no pointer at first, then let it emerge slowly and wherever it wants to. You have to be passive with this, letting it happen rather than making it happen. With a little practice you will get the hang of it. So let's say in your first practice you use this method, maybe clearing it and bring it up two or three times, and you get a reading of between one and two. So you were down at what you are subconsciously gauging as one-and-a-half. Someone else at the same depth might have got a reading of three. As you can see it is all highly subjective. This primarily serves as a measure of the difference between your own sessions. So don't bother comparing this number with that of someone else who is using the same measuring technique. Once you have reached the end of your deepening procedure you are ready to apply suggestions. What you have done with the relaxation and deepening procedures is increase your suggestibility. That is, you have opened up your subconscious mind at least a little bit to receive your suggestions. This works because of the particular, and peculiar, characteristics of the subconscious part of your mind. The most common and easiest way to apply suggestions is to have them worked out ahead of time, properly prepared and worded, and memorized. It should not be too difficult to remember them because they should be rather short and you are the one who composed them. If you have them ready and remembered, you can simply think your way through them at this point. Dialogue, or more properly monologue, is also okay. You just talk ("think" to keep your effort to a minimum) to yourself about what it is you want to do, be, become or whatever.

15

I not You Don't say "you." You are thinking to yourself, so use the first person personal pronoun "I." Some suggestions can be succinctly stated in a somewhat more formal sort of way, like, "I am eating less and becoming more slender every day." Elaborated suggestions are generally wordier and more of an ad lib: "Food is becoming less important to me every day and I am filling my time with more important and meaningful pursuits than eating. It is getting easier and easier to pass up desserts and other fattening foods . . ." and so on. There are many ways to apply suggestions. You can experiment in order to find the most effective method for yourself. If you have trouble, or feel that you are not finding the most effective way to apply suggestions, you might need a more in-depth approach to suggestion application. There are additional methods and techniques available in the hypnotic CDs available from the web site at: www.321sleep.co.uk Although people sometimes see immediate results from their suggestions, it is more likely to take a little time for them to kick in. So don't be impatient. On the other hand, if you have not begun to see some results within a couple of weeks, you need to change your suggestions.

16

Waking from the process Once you have finished applying suggestions you are through and ready to terminate your session. You could just open your eyes, get up and go about your business, but that is not a good idea. You should formally identify the end of every session. By doing this you provide a clear demarcation between the hypnotic state and your ordinary conscious awareness. A clear termination also prevents your self-hypnosis practice session from turning into a nap. If you want to take a nap, take a nap. But don't do it in a way that sleeping becomes associated with self hypnosis practice. If you are practicing at bedtime and don't care if you go on to sleep, that is okay. But still draw the line in your mind to indicate the end of your selfhypnosis session. This way you will avoid developing the habit of falling asleep when you practice hypnosis. To terminate the session, think to yourself that you are going to be fully awake and alert after you count up to, say, three or ten. "One, I'm beginning to come out of it, moving toward a waking state. Two, I'm becoming more alert, getting ready to wake up. Three, I'm lighter and lighter." Something like that all the way up to your desired number. Ten, I am now completely awake. If you are practicing in bed just before going to sleep, you might terminate like this: "One, I'm beginning to come out of it, moving toward the termination of the self-hypnotic state. Two, I am shifting over to a normal, drowsy state. Three, I'm completely out of self hypnosis and ready to go to sleep."

Another More Advanced Self-Hypnosis Technique 1. Find a Comfortable Position - Get a position that you will be able to maintain easily for the time you are going to be doing this process. It can be sitting or lying down, though sitting is recommended to prevent you from falling asleep. Get yourself centred, just looking in front of you and breathing slowly and easily. Let yourself relax. 2. Time - Determine the length of time that you intend to spend and make a statement to yourself about it such as "I am going into self hypnosis for 20 minutes ... " (or however long you want) You will be delighted to discover how well you "internal clock" can keep track of the time for you. 3. Purpose - Make a second statement to yourself about your purpose in going into self-hypnosis. In this process, we allow the unconscious mind to work on the issue rather than giving suggestions throughout, so our purpose statement should reflect that fact. Here's how I say it: "... for the purpose of allowing my unconscious mind to make the adjustments that are appropriate to assist me in _____________ ". Filling in the blank with what you want to achieve such as "developing more confidence in social situations. The actual words aren't nearly as important as the fact your statement acknowledges that you are turning this process over to your unconscious mind. 4. Exit State - Make a final statement to yourself about the state that you want to be in when you complete the process. Typically in hypnosis, we have heard the idea that you should come back feeling "wide awake, alert and refreshed", but in the real world that may not be what you want. For example, if you are doing your self-hypnosis before bedtime, you may prefer to come out of it "relaxed and ready for sleep". If you're doing it before some project you may want to come out "motivated and full of energy". Simply say to yourself, "... and when I'm finished, I'm going to feel __________". 5. The Process - Looking in front of you, notice three things (one at a time) that you see. Go slowly, pausing for a moment on each. It is preferable that they be small things, such as a spot on the wall, a doorknob, the corner of a picture frame, etc. Some people like to name the items as they look at them "I see the hinge on the door frame". (If you don't know the name for the thing, try "I see that thing over there"). Now turn your attention to your auditory channel and notice, one by one, three things that you hear. (You will notice that this allows you to incorporate sounds that occur in the environment rather than being distracted by them. Next, attend to your feeling and notice three things-sensations that you can feel. Again, go slowly from one to the next. It's useful to use sensations that normally are outside of your awareness, such as the weight of your eyeglasses, the feeling of your wristwatch, the texture of your shirt, etc. Continue the process using two Visuals, then two auditories and then two kinaesthetic. In the same manner, continue (slowly) with one of each. You have now completed the "external" portion of the process. Now it's time to begin the "internal" part.

18

Close your eyes. Bring an image into your mind. Don't work too hard at this. You can construct an image or simply take what comes. It may be a point of light, it may be a beautiful beach, or it could be a pizza. If something comes to you just use it. If nothing comes, feel free to "put something there". Name it as you did above. Pause and let a sound come into your awareness or generate one and name it. Although this is technically the internal part, if you should hear a sound outside or in the room with you, it's OK to use that. Remember that the idea is to incorporate things that you experience rather than being distracted by them. Next, become aware of a feeling and name it. It's preferable to do this internally - use your imagination. (I feel the warmth of the summer sun on my arms) However, as with the auditory, if you actually have a physical sensation that gets your attention, use that. Repeat the process with two images, then two sounds, then two feelings. Repeat the cycle once again using three images, three sounds, and three feelings. 6.Completing the Process - It is not unusual to "space out" or lose consciousness during the process. At first some people think that they've fallen asleep. But generally you will find yourself coming back automatically at the end of the allotted time. This is an indication that you weren't sleeping and that your unconscious mind was doing what you asked of it. Note: Most people don't get all the way through the process. That's perfectly all right. If you should complete the process before the time has ended, just continue with 4 images, sounds, feelings, then 5 and so on. As for your goals, trust that your unconscious mind is working for you "in the background" while you're doing the process. This process is not easy and it may take several attempts to achieve any kind of success. Stick with the process and practise it as often as possible. Once you have mastered how you are able to quieten the mind you can start to understand the processes of hypnosis easier and quicker and develop yourself the way you want to be. You may find it easier to listen to a hypnotic cassettes during this process to help you achieve the trance state quicker and easier.

FAMOUS USERS OF HYPNOSIS Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-92) repeated names to himself like a hypnotic mantra in order to access different states of consciousness in which whole poems came to him. Mozart (1756-91) apparently composed the famous opera Cosi fan tutte while hypnotised. Rachmaninov (1873-1943) reputedly composed one of his concertos following a posthypnotic suggestion. Goethe (1749-1832) writer and scientist and, Chopin (1810-1849) pianist and composer both took classes in hypnosis at the University of Strasbourg. Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) politician counted backwards in 3s in order to stay awake all night and avoid tiredness during W.W.II. Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud developed modern psychiatry as a result of learning about (and practising) hypnosis. Louis XVI of France appointed a committee of investigate the healing powers of mesmerism. The committee included Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) US statesman, philosopher and physicist, Antoine Lavoisier (1743-1794) father of modern chemistry, Dr. Joseph Guillotin (1738-1814) inventor and doctor. Hypnotic Tapes and CDs: How many times have you wished you were different ... slimmer, healthier, happier, friendlier, self-confident, more creative, wealthier or free from bad habits such as smoking or drinking? Psychologists tell us the subconscious may account for as much as 90-95% of our brain power. I cannot distinguish between right and wrong, good and bad, true and false. When programmed, the subconscious mind creates automatically according to the information it has received. When your subconscious programming is positive, your life is positive.
