EIP Mathayom Course Description First Semester Subject: Fundamental English Grade: Mathayom 1 Course Description This course

has been devised based on the foreign language curriculum of the Ministry of Education and will cover and surpass all standards and benchmarks established for Mathayom 1 students. The portion of the course focusing on literature and general studies will follow a thematic study which will aid students in the develop of skills such as distinguishing elements of time and place, identifying themes, drawing conclusions, making critical judgments, applying literary terms and reading with confidence. The composition component of the course will further develop the writing skills of the students by providing concrete instruction and practice with specific modes such as expository, persuasive, etc. In addition, students will receive progressive grammar instruction to ensure their work demonstrates an awareness of the correct grammatical conventions. Throughout the course emphasis will be placed on critical thinking, along with gaining confidence with spoken and written English. Course Objectives 1. Inspire an appreciation and enthusiasm for literature, and the ability to recognize common themes that occur frequently in literature. 2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of time and place in the Western tradition of writing. 3. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the works in class and an ability to discuss them clearly and competently. 4. The student will develop a thorough vocabulary that will enable him to speak and write competently in all subject areas. 5. The student will develop his skills in English composition and the ability to express his ideas with confidence. 6. The student will develop a critical faculty enabling him to provide a critique of texts. 7. The student will develop a spirit of independent inquiry into areas of personal interest. 8. The student will improve his pronunciation and eliminate any areas of difficulty that limit his ability to express himself in the English language. 9. The student will listen and read as to interpret messages from various media and apply the knowledge critically. 10. The student will possess skills for language communication for data, information and exchange of ideas, apply technology to express feelings and manage learning processes appropriately. 11. The student will understand the speaking and writing process, communicate data, opinions and the concepts of various subjects creatively, efficiently and aesthetically. 12. The student will understand language and the relationship to Thai culture by utilizing language at the appropriate time and place. 13. The student will understand the similarities and differences between the Thai language and culture and English language and western culture by utilizing language.

EIP Mathayom Course Description First Semester Subject: M1 Core English Grade: Mathayom 1 Contents I. Thematic Studies a. Unit 1: Can All Mysteries Be Solved? i. Read various texts relating to the theme: 1. Novel excerpt 2. Non-Fiction: Math & Science 3. Grammar / Writing 4. Non-Fiction: Social Studies 5. Short Stories 6. Put It All Together 7. The Language of Art ii. Students will learn how to intensively analyze a text and practice critical thinking methods. b. Unit 2: How Does Growing Up Change Us? i. Read various texts relating to the theme: 1. Social Studies: Ancient Kids 2. Novel Excerpt 1 3. Novel Except 2 4. Non-Fiction: Science and Folk Tales 5. The Old Grandfather and His Little Children 6. Writing / Grammar 7. Put It All Together ii. Students will learn how to intensively analyze a text and practice critical thinking methods. c. Unit 3: How Does Helping Others Help Us All? 1. Novel Excerpt 2. Non-Fiction: Social Studies 3. Writing / Grammar 4. Non-Fiction: Science 5. Put It All Together d. Composition i. Students will learn the writing process: Prewriting, Drafting, Revising/Editing and Publishing/Presenting. ii. Students will learn how to properly organize an essay. iii. Students will exercise their creative writing capabilities and learn how to use descriptive language in writing. iv. Students will further develop their writing capabilities by focusing on paragraph structure, description, persuasion, instruction, and narration. v. Students will write a biographical sketch, a persuasive letter and a personal narrative.

e. Oral Presentations i. Students will read selected literary texts aloud in class as well as present their ideas and answers to questions in order to practice and refine pronunciation. ii. Students will learn how to read aloud with proper consideration to punctuation. f. Grammar i. Students will continue to develop their writing capabilities and focus on the following grammatical skills 1. Present Simple (to be) 2. Present Simple with various verbs 3. Present Continuous 4. Imperatives 5. Past Simple 6. Subject, Verb, Object 7. Question forms (who, what, when, etc.) 8. A, An, The 9. Plural Nouns 10. This, That, These, Those 11. Countable and Uncountable Nouns 12. A, Some, Any, None 13. Adjectives
