Water scarcity

Water is the most important source in our life, not only for humans but also for animals and plants. The human body consists of two thirds of water and without it we will die. Also 95% of the human brain consists of water. Almost everything needs water to survive, but nowadays we stand on the brink of water scarcity. A report was written in 2012 by Millennium Development Goals that 783 million people can't find a good source of drinking water. Also about 3.41 million people die from water pollution in the world each year. There was some causes of water scarcity, some of those by environment and some by human. Climate change is one of the causes that effects on the availability of the freshwater supplies such as receding glaciers, reduced stream and shrinking lakes. Also some of the reasons is the increase in populations in areas where water is limited or in the desert. Pollution and overuse of water also had some effect on water scarcity. We can say its the imbalance between water resources and water use. ''The real crisis is NOT oil it's All about water'' (October-November 2000, by Mikhail Gorbachev). As humans, we can live without oil but we can't live without water. We need it for drinking, cooking, washingetc. If we dont do anything towards that problem, a lot of diseases will come out from uncleansed and polluted water. Also food production and industrial process will be affected due to water scarcity. Also after 100 years there will be no life if we dont do anything.

Australia experienced 3 rainfall shifts (wet periods) since 1880, but most of the time they had dry periods. Between 1895 and 1995 they had about nine serious droughts and most of those dry periods lasted for 2 - 8 years. Since the start of the new century it appears that a new dry period started. The key component in any weather system is rainfall and in Australia the rainfall is highly variable between years and locations. The rainfall in Australia faced a lot of droughts years and because the Eucalypts tree has a high oil content, that was the main reason that cause a

fire in the forest. The big problem here is that the forest will need a high amount of water to regrown, especially for the first twenty-five years.

Changing weather climate has the biggest effect on Australia and most of the people believe that the reason is global warming, but the broad Australia community has a high recognition that there is a link between carbon dioxide emissions and global warming. Another reason written in ABS reports says that there is an overuse of water on human activities (such as farms, manufacturing and service industries) and on personal activities. Another reason is that they are removing surface water and they pumped ground water to levels which are not sustainable. Also many small farms have dams and they hold about 9% of all stored surface water and these dams stopped the service water reaching rivers and streams. There are many solutions to the water scarcity problem. One of them is by building a low pressure water network that distribute minimum amount of water every day. Another solution is to filter salty water by removing salt from sea water and some countries worked on that already and they produce about 6 billion gallons of usable water every day. Also we can save some water by recycling waste water and reused it. In Australia and as an experienced country with water scarcity, they developed many solutions. One of those solutions is that the National Water commission established the National Water Accounts to track and describe how much water is used, where it is used and for what. Also the Commonwealth Government would give a reference to the Productivity Commission to move towards a definite population target by 2050 and the Commissions wants the government to change the current policy settings. The other solutions is that the government encourage households to install rainwater tanks to collect and use rainwater and the government offer financial and advisory services for those who was going to install those tanks. Another solution is that the government has focused on awareness campaign for the next generation of people to conserve in the water consumption through TV, newspaper and magazines. Also the government has invested a lot of money to build about 500 large dams around Australia with storage capacity of 84,000 GL. I was lucky to see one of those dams which called Hnze Dam and that was on Aug 2013.
