Roadl Dahl

Roald Dahl was a British writer, novelist, poet and screenwriter. He was born on 13 September in 1916 to Norwegian parents in Cardiff. His parents were Harald Dahl and Sofie Magdalene Dahl. Dahl was named after Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian polar explorer. He had three sisters Astri, Alfhild, and Else. During the Second World War Dahl served in the Royal Air Force. On 19 September 1940 he had to land with his aircraft and he crashed. He became blind for a time and later he wrote a story about his crash. Roald started writing in 1942 when he was sent to Washington D. C. He left the service with the substantive rank of squadron leader and his record of five aerial victories qualified him as a flying ace. Probably he shot down more than five aircraft, because in 1941 twentytwo German aircraft were shot down. His first published work was Shot Down Over Libya in The Saturday Evening Post. It was about his crash in 1940. Then he wrote a first childrens book The Gremlins. His most famous books are for example Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda or James and the Giant Peach. Dahl married American actress Patricia Neal in 1953 at Trinity Church in New York City. They had five children together Olivia, Tessa, Theo, Ophelia and Lucy. Their marriage lasted for 30 years, but in 1983, they had a divorce. Then he married Felicity Crosland, who was younger than he was. Roald Dahl died on 23 November 1990, at the age of 74 of a blood disease in Oxford. He was buried in the cemetery at St Peter and St Paul's Church in Great Missenden. In June 2005, the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre opened in Great Missenden. Dahl wrote many childrens books, but also some adult stories usually with a dark sense of humor and a surprise ending. His stories are full of vices greed, vanity or hunger for power and sex. They also have a dark twist. His childrens books are about violence, greed and punishment, adults are usually cruel and children are at mercy of them. For example his story The Smoker also known as Man from the South is about a young man who accepted a bet with a stranger. If he can make a lighter ten times running, he will win a Cadillac, if he cant, he will lose his finger. There we can see the violence and a the dark side of these stories. Roald Dahl loved chocolate, so he had a topic for his childrens book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Its also about strange kids and their parents one is greedy, one wants to be in all first and the best, one is addicted to computer games and TV and the last one is fat because he loves eating and sweets. All of these children are punished because of their bad manners and only good Charlie is rewarded and becomes the owner of Willi Wonkas chocolate factory. But he has to change Wonka and his view on family and friendship. Author J. K. Rowling named Charlie and the Chocolate Factory among top ten books every child should read. I think Roald Dahl is a very interesting author. I saw the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and I liked it. I read and saw Matilda, too. His books and stories have something special in them, maybe some hidden thoughts in our minds. I think that everyone should read some of his stories, because they are different and they express things we dont like in an

interesting way. I know these stories can be bad and horrible for someone, but the others maybe will like these dark stories. Sources:
