Pastors Corner
I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. Isa. 42:6b-7, reading for First Sunday after Epiphany Im currently enjoying a book on CD, Mad About the Boy, by Helen Fielding. The main character is the fictional Bridget Jones (of Diary fame). Although shes now 51 and widowed, Bridget hasnt changed much. She still tracks her calories and alcohol units, resolves to change so that shes more fit, organized, and selfassured, and continues to be scattered, insecure, and funny. This novel has reminded me that we are what we do, not what we say. Our intentions may be good, our thoughts may be grand. But unless we act in concert with them, our words are empty. This month at St. Francis we have opportunities to reflect on and celebrate what we are doing, how we are serving as a light to the nations and what God is calling us to do in 2014. On Jan 5, our children serve as worship leaders. Our little ones have written the Prayers of the People; two of our teens will play oboe, cello and flute to accompany the congregations singing. Our youngsters will enact the Gospel, the coming of the magi to the baby Jesus. On Jan 12, two of our children will be baptized, sealed as Christs own forever. On Jan 19, we will hold our annual meeting, celebrating the accomplishments of 2013 and electing leadership for more good works in 2014. On Jan 26, our Youth Group will offer soup and bread, requesting a free will donation. The proceeds will be given to the charities of the teens choice. Come to St. Francis and hear how our children view the Gospel and how they pray for the welfare and peace of the world. Come to St. Francis and see the many ways we work to bring light to those who sit in darkness. Come to St. Francis and join in serving as Christs hands and feet in the world. Christ is born in us. Alleluia! -- Pastor

Souper Bowl Sunday!

No, its not about football just yet. Its about enjoying fellowship and nutritious, delicious soup and supporting the fund-raising efforts of our Youth Group. Those who were here for this Sunday last year remember how great this was! This year, our Adult Forum topic is related and we have a terrific guest speaker. The Peanut Butter Project, recipient of some of last years Youth Group fund-raising efforts, is sending us a speaker. The Peanut Butter Project is an international group, based here in St. Louis, who help people in developing countries to fight effectively the problems of infant malnutrition by feeding them a simple but highly nutritious food. Their efforts drastically reduce the number of infant deaths and increase quality of life for families Be sure to join us: Sunday, January 26th 11:40 12:15

The Eagles Are Watching.

Theyre waiting for us to save the date: Saturday, February 15th, St. Francis will have its second annual Eagle Watch and lunch. Sue Schmidt is currently finalizing details and will let you know where, what time, whether or not we get to take a ferry, and where well have lunch. For those new to the area, St. Louis benefits each winter from the frozen rivers north of us when eagles have to come this far south to dive for their fish dinners and then soar again up to their aeries. Its a fabulous experience to watch these giant birds swoop and glide right in front of our eyes. Although we dont dive into cold water for our food, dining out during the trip is a lovely event for us. We try to find places that are accessible for all in cold weather, so if you have youngsters or elders whod love to see the eagles, this would be a great trip.

Forum Dinners
The Forum Dinner groups have been put together, based on the number of guests you can accommodate in your home. The co-hosts cannot host in their home but will partner with the evenings host. Ushers: Helping the Service to Flow Smoothly

St. Francis, like most churches, depends on its ushers each week to take care of essential chores that need to be done during the service each week. In addition to greeting parishioners at the door each week, the usher: Assigns two people to hold the gospel candles that week Goes downstairs to inform the Childrens Ed adults and students when its time to come back upstairs to rejoin the service Takes up the bread and wine, giving them to the Vicar Takes up the collection and brings it to the Vicar. Assists children with the red wagon full of groceries. Takes a count of the congregation and gives it to the Vicar Assists the flow of communicants to avoid traffic jams.

If you would like to help out with the usher ministry, please talk to Bob Smith or to Pastor Sally. Our ushers are all currently men, but any grown member will be more than welcome in this ministry!

Sylvia Ahmad provides a healthy recipe to start 2014

KIDS KORNER
Our Childrens Reflections on God and the Gospel

Why shouldnt the people go back to Herod and tell him about Jesus?

Because if they told Herod, he would hurt Jesus. Im thankful we have enough money to go to school. Great, because I got to escape Mr. Meanyhead. (a.k.a. King Herod) Weird.

What are we thankful for?

How was it, being a magi?

Parents are people too.

St. Francis Kids in the Limelight Two upcoming Sundays will feature the work and worship of some of our younger members. Sunday, January 5th, Youth Sunday, worship participants are our children and youth in several key roles. Cristin and Caitlin Selle will provide instrumental accompaniment to our hymns. The Childrens Formation class has written the Prayers of the People for this week. Sunday, January 12th we will read about the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist, then we will share in and celebrate the baptisms of Reese and Jillian Conley. What a great month we have to celebrate our kids! Submitted by Kathleen McDonald

Preparing for St. Francis Annual Meeting

Its not always easy for a parish (or a mission!) to hold an annual meeting that can: Communicate one years work and a new years goals; Approve a budget Elect new leadership And only take about one hour!

But our leadership have done it and will do it again, on Sunday, January 19th, during adult forum. There are only three things that the rest of us need to do to make this a success: Report in: If you are a ministry leader, please send Beth or Pastor Sally a brief summary of your ministrys activities during 2013. Please send before January 9th so your summary can be published before the meeting. Be there. Your body needs to be there in order to vote on the budget and on the slate of new leadership. We need a quorum to do those things. Your presence is important to you and to the rest of us as well. Cast your votes. See you there! Submitted by Kathleen McDonald

Consider This
Building the Kingdom of God via the Soil Health Partnership. Really? Really. And we are, I believe, called to help. The Soil Health Partnership is a brand new initiative among farmers, crop production companies, researchers and ecologists. The Partnership will begin on a few farms in the Midwest, testing current soil conditions to get baseline data and follow up by continuing to research the results of farmers choices in the field. The project is spearheaded by the National Corn Growers Association in the person of our own Max Starbuck. Maxs challenge is to help the lion to lie down with the lamb. The diverse members of the Soil Health Partnership, from eco-activists to family farmers to seed and fertilizer manufacturers, realize that: We need to produce enough food for a rapidly growing world population Were not gaining any new land to farm We need to improve the soil on our farms without impairing the health of the beings that use the crops or impairing the health of our water systems. This kind of work needs cooperation and collaboration to be successful. Name-calling and finger pointing will not help. The lion and the lamb need to lie down together, need to plan, study, and work together for a long time.

Submitted by Kathleen McDonald

The Chalice

Page 17

www.stfranciseureka.com

This is where we can help. The people of St. Francis can and will pray for the success of the Soil Health Partnership, for the success of those who improve the life of the world by struggling to accept and promote some very different points of view. Within the next few weeks, the Soil Health Partnership will become a routine part of our corporate prayer. It will become part of the Prayers of the People each Sunday and, as part of our Vicars wonderful spreadsheet, it will become part of the Monday night prayer group as well. As we work to bring about the Kingdom of God, there are lots of jobs were called to do. Some of them are fairly easy and immediately effective, like bringing groceries to the Eureka Food Pantry. It doesnt cost much time, money, or effort, and hungry people are fed within the week. The job of prayer is even easier and less costly, although its effectiveness will probably not be seen so quickly. We dont know much about how prayer works for those who are being prayed for. What we do know, is that prayer changes the one who does the praying, making that person more connected to God and attentive to Gods voice in the world. I doubt that the partnership agreement among the members of the Soil Health Partnership includes specific reference to building the Kingdom of God. But we know what could happen here or in any place where the people of God work to help one another. We will pray for their understanding, their acceptance and the success of their work. And we will pray for their leadership. Submitted by Kathleen McDonald

Episco-FAQs

Q: A:

What is the difference between a parish and a mission? A parish does not need on-going financial support from the Diocese. Their priest-in-charge is called the Rector. The governing board is called the Vestry. A mission requires on-going financial support from the Diocese. The Bishop is their Rector, the priest-in-charge is known as the Vicar. The governing board is called the Bishops Committee.

Q:

How many of each are there in the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri?

A: There are 32 parishes and 12 missions.
