he auction industry has survived the transition into the age ofcomputers. In the mid-1990s, the speedy one-upsmanship ofauctions burst into an online format. Since then, auctions have been more popular than ever lacking the auction chant, perhaps, but retaining that hyper-competitive, nerve-racking nature. Oberfoell Auctioneers is one auction company that has flourished in the new era. Four years ago, Don Oberfoell, the owner of Oberfoell Auctioneers in Buhl, created an auctioning website called Do-Bid.com. The family January 2014

run, 30-year-old company launched into cyberspace, with a website designed to bring buyers and sellers togetherfrom near and far. The website is akin to consumerto-consumerselling sites like eBay, but it comes with the rules of an auction built in. Now, many who were restricted from auctioning can give it a try and they can do it from home, sitting at the computer. Not everyone has enough assets to support a live auction, Oberfoell says. A seller using Do-Bid.com, on the other hand, can auction off as little as one significant asset. There are no haggling buyers, no travel costs, and no security risks. The service offers targeted marketing strategies so the right people know about the right auctions. And since the auctions are online, bidders can hail from anywhere. Buyers on Do-Bid.com are allowed to bid on multiple items at once, increasing potential wins, and the website features such tools as group-extended bidding and AutoBid to make the process easier. The website has proven itself a hit. In the four years since Oberfoell founded DoBid, the sales volume at Oberfoell Auctioneers has increased rapidly, doubling in the websites first year. The company has since maintained an annual increase in sales of at least 25 percent. Do-Bid.com is so effective that otherauctioneers have become affiliates of Oberfoell. As affiliates, they list their auctions on the website to take advantage of Do-Bids expansive bidderbase. No auctioneer wishes that another auctioneer has a bad auction, Oberfoell says. Oberfoell Auctioneers also offers their affiliates individualized training and marketing strategies, increasing the probability of satisfactory auctions for buyers and sellers. January 2014

The key to Oberfoells business strategy, he says, is marketing. His company uses everything from e-mail to AM radio to postcards, employing a high-impact strategy. This way, the word about Do-Bid.com gets around to financial institutions, businesses, government agencies, and law firms so that bidders can find an enormous and varied array of items listed for auction. They can find cars, trucks, business liquidations, estates, antiques, snowmobiles, ATVs, boats, firearms, household items, coins, jewelry, sporting goods, heavy equipment, and more, with the assets constantly changing every week. the Iron Range, they have grown to several locations, including Hermantown in the Duluth area, with affiliates across Northern Minnesota. But Oberfoell wants to make sure sellers get the highest possible returns for their items, which means deciding between live auctions and Do-Bid.com. If a sellers lots are attractive to locals, then an on-site auction could be the best method. Ultimately, however, most of the 35 to 40 auctions they hold per month are online. Selling online tends to increase the competition most optimally, ensuring sellers the best possible outcomes. Oberfoells credibility in the industry, after all, comes from getting the best deals for his sellers or, as he says, doing the job right, so that clients recommend him and competitors respect him. Oberfoell has taken customer service to the next level with his technologically savvy career, in many ways amplifying his reputation among sellers.
