Conduct a check on learning and summarize the learning activity. Learning Step / Activity 2. Start, operate, and shut down the 125-GPM pump and perform PMCS. Method of Instruction: Instructor to Student Ratio: Time of Instruction: Media: a. Install. 1) Select a level site not more than 25 feet above the water supply. Avoid long suction lifts which reduce pumping efficiency. 2) Place pump on a base that is solid and strong enough to support weight of unit. 3) Select a level site where there will be enough space on all sides for servicing and operation of the unit. 4) Connect hoses to inlet and outlet adapters. Make sure intake end of inlet hose is connected. 5) If pump is operated in an enclosed area, make certain that there is proper ventilation and exhaust gases are piped outside. NOTE: Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas, which can cause serious illness or death. Demonstration 1:18 0 hrs -None-

10

b. Perform before-operations PMCS. c. Start and operate the 125-GPM pump Model 2-125-50-G (TM 5-4320208-12&P). 1) Prime the pump. NOTE: Do not start pump without first priming with water. Dry operation will damage pump seals and cause pump to fail. After priming, do not run pump more than 3 to 5 minutes without water flowing through it. NOTE: Allow engine sufficient warmup time before starting pumping operation at IDLE speed not to exceed three minutes. 2) Move choke control to close. 3) Turn Fuel Shut off valve to OPEN. 4) Move throttle control to half throttle and tighten throttle nut. 5) Set ignition switch to RUN. 6) Place the Inlet Air Temperature Control in the SUMMER position. 7) Wind starter rope around starter pulley and pull rope sharply. 8) When engine starts and warms up, slowly open choke. Maintain smooth operation until choke is fully open. 9) Let engine run at about one-half throttle until it reaches operating temperature. 10) Move throttle control to full throttle for maximum pumping rate when operating temperature is reached. NOTE: If less than maximum pumping rate is desired, adjust throttle control position to the required speed setting. 11) To stop pumping without stopping engine, move throttle control to idle position and allow engine to idle. 12) To resume pumping operation, move throttle control to desired speed setting. d. Starting and operating the 125-GPM pump (TM 5-4320-304-14). 1) Preparation. a) Move throttle control hand lever to HIGH position on throttle plate. b) Pull out extra fuel device button until fully extended. c) Turn decompression lever clockwise to 12 o'clock position.

11

CAUTION: If engine does not start on initial attempt, allow engine rotation to stop completely before again engaging crank handle. Prime the pump as soon as possible after engine starts. Rotation of pump impeller without liquid in volume can reduce service life of pump. 2) Engage crank handle in gear housing. 3) With both hands, turn crank handle clockwise with increasing speed. 4) When decompression lever reaches 0 position, the highest possible speed must be obtained. Engine will start and go to maximum operating speed. Extra fuel device button will return to normal position by itself. 5) Adjust throttle control hand lever to desired speed. 6) Priming the pump. a) Before priming the pump, check that engine is running smoothly. b) Remove pipe plug from priming port. c) Pour water into priming port to fill volute. CAUTION: If volute does not fill with liquid, check suction hose and suction hose connection at suction (intake) flange hose adapter for leaks. Be sure that suction hose end is completely immersed in water. NOTE: As water fills volute, air is removed through discharge port. As the air is removed, water from the suction side of the pump is drawn into the volute and the pump will then draw on its own. 7) Adjusting speed. If necessary, adjust centrifugal pump unit speed and pumping rate by moving throttle control hand lever left or right, raising or lowering engine rpm as required. e. Starting and operating the 125-GPM pump (TM 10-4320-309-14 and TM 10-4320-325-14). 1) Prime the pump. 2) Open access door. 3) Set the fuel cock to open position (6 o'clock) by turning handle to the downward position. 4) Loosen engine speed control lever knob and move engine speed control lever to the START (downward) position. Tighten knob to hold in start position. 5) Slowly pull out starting handle until you feel resistance, and then return it to the initial position.

12

6) Push the decompression lever down and release. It will return automatically to the normal position (12 o'clock) when the recoil starter is pulled. CAUTION: Do not allow the handle grip to snap back against the engine. Return it gently to prevent damage to the starter. 7) Hold recoil starting handle firmly and pull out the handle briskly. Engine will start and go to maximum operating speed. 8) After 1 to 3 minutes, the centrifugal pump will start pumping water. 9) Adjusting speed. a) If necessary, loosen speed control lever knob, adjust speed control lever to desired speed and pumping rate by moving the lever. b) Tighten up speed control lever knob at desired speed. Move up to decrease speed and down to increase speed. f. Perform during-operations PMCS.

g. Stopping the 125-GPM pump Model 2-125-50-G (TM 5-4320-20812&P). 1) Place the throttle control in the idle position, and let the engine idle for 3 to 5 minutes. This will allow the engine to cool. 2) Set the Ignition Switch to OFF. h. Stopping the 125-GPM pump (TM 5-4320-304-14). CAUTION: Immediate shutdown of the engine without a 5-minute idle time may cause damage to engine. Do so only when made necessary by overriding system requirements or emergency conditions. 1) Slowly move throttle control hand lever toward LOW position to idle speed. Allow engine to idle for 5 minutes to allow engine operating temperature to stabilize. NOTE: If centrifugal pump unit is to be reused in its present placement and alignment, be prepared to close suction and discharge valves on hoses attached to the pump. This will retain liquid in pump volute and reduce or eliminate priming requirements. 2) Move throttle control hand lever to extreme right (LOW) position. 3) Close any suction and discharge vales that are installed in hoses. 4) If pump is to be removed from system, remove pipe plug and drain pump. 5) Remove suction hose from suction (intake) flange.

13

6) Remove discharge hose from discharge port. 7) Cover suction (intake) flange hose adapter. 8) Cover discharge port hose adapter. i. Stopping the 125-GPM pump (TM 10-4320-309-14 and TM 10-4320325-14). CAUTION: Do not stop engine suddenly since it may cause the temperature to rise abnormally high and possible damage to the engine may result. When stopping the engine, reduce the load slowly and allow the engine to run at idle speed for one minute. Do not stop engine with the decompression lever as engine damage may result. If the engine cannot be stopped by the speed control lever knob, the move the fuel cock to the closed (3 o'clock) position. 1) Slowly move speed control lever knob upward until engine is running at idle speed. Allow engine to run at idle speed for 3 minutes. 2) Close any discharge valves, then any suction valves that are installed in the hoses. This will retain liquid in pump volute and reduce or eliminate priming requirements for the next pumping application. 3) Move engine speed control lever knob all the way upward to the "STOP" position. j. k. Perform after-operations PMCS. Complete DA Form 2404, DA Form 1714-R, and DD Form 1970. Give completed forms to immediate supervisor at the end of the shift.
