Conic sections* Construction of parabola, ellipse, hyperbola, cycloid, trochoids, epicycloid and hypocycloid. Projection of points and straight lines Projection of points in different quadrants, projection of parallel and inclined lines. Projections of planes and solids Projection of plane and solid in different positions. Orthographic projection Orthographic projection of different types of simple objects. Isometric projection Isometric projection and isometric views of different planes and solids. Hamiltonian function and its physical significance, Hamiltons equations of motion and their simple applications. Optics: Concept of coherent sources, Interference by division of wave front, Phase change on reflection, Llyods mirror, Interference by division of amplitude, Parallel film, Fringes of equal inclination and equal thickness, Newtons rings, Michelson interferometer and its uses. Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction (Qualitative discussion), Single slit diffraction, Plane transmission grating. Resolving power of a telescope. Basic principle of laser action, Spontaneous and stimulated emission, Various types of lasers (Solid state lasers, He Ne laser and semiconductor lasers). Special Theory of Relativity: Result of Michelson-Morley Experiment, Postulates of STR, Galilean transformation, Lorentz transformation, Simultaneity, Length contraction, Time dilation, Addition of velocities, Variation of mass with velocity, Mass-energy relation.

Theory and Principles in Chemical Bonding and Structures Hybridization- concept and its applications to simple molecules/ions; VSEPR theory and molecular shapes; Resonance- concept, resonance energy, canonical structures and application in the elucidation of structure and properties of some typical molecules/ions; metallic bonding- discussion in light of Electron Sea Model and its application in understating the properties of metals. Water and its Treatment: Water: Structure, properties and treatment, comparison in structural properties of water in different states, sources of water, impurities in water, hardness of water and its disadvantages, boiler scale and its prevention, caustic embrittlement, boiler corrosion; treatment of water- various useful methods, B.O.D. and C.O.D. and their applications. Chemical Kinetics: General discussion on different order reactions, derivation of second, third, parallel and consecutive reactions, order and molecularity of reactions, differential and integrated from of rate equations, determination of order of reactions, activation energy- concept and connected problems, kinetics study and mechanism of reactions (with suitable systems), Parallel and consecutive reactions. Air Pollution Sources: classification and properties of air pollutants; interaction at the earth surfaces; health and vegetation. Air pollution control- General methods (outline only). Engineering Materials Cement: Composition and manufacture of Portland cement, setting and hardening of cement. Fuel: Classification, calorific value (Bomb calorimeter); Coal: source, classification, carbonization of coal. Petroleum- classification, different fractions and uses; Cracking of hydrocarbons, knocking and octane number, cetane number, synthetic petrols and petrochemicals.
