Small Owl by Edie Kim Materials: - Brown (body) Cream (eyes) and orange (beak) sport weight or worsted

weight yarn - Stuffing - stich holder - long seaming needle or dollmakers needle if you have them - 3 mm crochet hook (or slightly smaller than yarn calls for) - Glass safety eyes if you like Abbreviations: ch = chain st = stitches sc = single crochet dc = double crochet ss = slip stitch inc 2 = increase by working 2 sc into one stitch dec 2 = decrease by working sc into every other stitch ie skipping the stitch directly beside working stitch and instead drawing through every other stitch.

Instructions: Head and Body. (brown yarn) Crocheted in round This pattern works top down in spirals as opposed to rows. 1) ch 4 connect with slip stitch 2) sc 8 st into the centre of the loop 3) place stitch holder in the first stitch. Starting from the first stich, *inc 2, sc 1* and repeat the ** till you reach 36 stitches around in total. 4) bring up stitchmarker and sc straight for 7 rows 5) bring up stitchmarker and starting from first stitch *inc 2, sc 1* and repeat the ** till you reach the beginning of the stitchmarker. This should be 54 st in total but dont be too worried if its one or two off. 6) sc straight for 10 rows this is the body of the owl 7) now we decrease to make the bottom of the owl bring up stitchmarkder, dec every other stitch straight through this row this will make a sharp curve for the bottom of the owl 8) bring up stitchmarker, sc 1 row straight, 9) dec every other stitch straight through next row 10) bring up stitchmarker, sc 1 row straight 11) dec every other stitch straight through next row there should be approx 7 sts left and a small hole. 12) cut a long tail for sewing and pull through 13) stuff body tight with stuffing and stitch up bottom hole.

Wings (brown yarn) Make 2 Crocheted in flat 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) ch 6 skip the 6th ch and sc into the remaining 5 st. turn ch 1, sc into remaining 5 st turn ch1, sc into remaining 5 st turn dc into 3rd st 5 times (this makes the curve of the wing) (This is a pineapple technique) slip stich into the first stitch cut a long (14) tail for sewing and pull through. Weave ends up the side of the wing till you reach the top 7) sew to sides of the owl.

Eyes (cream yarn) Make 2 Crocheted in round 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) ch 5 connect via ss *sc1, ch1 * repeat 6 times, ss dc 12 sts, ss and leave a long tail for sewing make 2 and sew both onto your owl beside each other. At this point you can either sew on glass eyes or stitch on brown ones.

Ear tufts (brown yarn) Make 2 1) 2) 3) 4) ch8 skip the 8th st and dc 7 sts ss and cut a tail for sewing. Fold in half and stitcth onto owl for ears

Beak (orange yarn) Make 1 1) ch 4 ss together 2) leave long tail for sewing cut and stitch onto owl as a beak
