WHAT HAVE YOU DONE IN THE PAST TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT YET FLUENT IN THEIR READING? DUE DATE : 12TH MAY 2013

I teach pupils in Year 2 Gemilang and 2 Cemerlang. Most of them are guided reader. There are some of their strength and weakness for fluent and weak pupils. Strength Fluent pupils Some of them are teachers children. So, they are slightly fluent reader. This is because they are forced to read at home by their parents. Only 2 to 4 pupils are attending English tuition classes. From that they are able to read fluently because they get extra training especially in reading and understanding. They are mostly fluent in simple words or short words such as He is a boy or The house is big. So, they are able to read simple sentences and simple story only. That is a limitation. But they really like to read and this is an advantage for them. If they are given a lot of reading, they will continue to read. Weak pupils They love to watch English cartoons but the cartoons that they love to watch are silent cartoons such as Oggy And The Cockroaches and Tom And Jerry. They has dictionary and able to ask their friends how to pronounce correctly and the meaning of the words. In this matter, dictionary really help me (as teacher) to pronounce correctly. Most of them are from the poor in English Language. So, they absolutely weak in reading. This is happen because their parents or family weak in English Language and their family cant help them much if they faced some difficulties in English and these will give some adverse impact on them. Majority of them are using fully Malay Language at home as their medium in daily communication. So, when they at school, they feel like they are forced to learn English Language especially in reading. When they not sincere in learning, at the end of the day, they cant achieve what Weakness They faced problems when they read the article or story that they not familiar of. Such as the English story tales of Snow White, The Ugly Duckling and Puss In Boots. Some words are difficult to pronounce because they lack of exposure for those words such as name of country, English name such as Dorothy, Samantha or Penelope. These pupils might face problems especially the long words such as beautiful, bicycle or photograph. Or some words that has combination of vowels such as beautiful, beanstalk and favourite. They may pause before continue reading when they had to read these words.

they should get. They also dont have enough facilities such as picture dictionary or bilingual dictionary which can help them to understand the meaning of the words besides helping them to cope as many as vocabulary in their mind. As teacher, we only can remind them to buy either one. So, hope their parents will buy for them in order to improvise their understanding in English.

What have you done in the past to support students who are not yet fluent in their reading?

For the past few months, I encourage them to read more English stuffs such as storybooks, card reader, signs and magazines. I also put fun activities in my English class especially in reading activity. I also make reading quizzes, give rewards to those pupils who able to read and motivate them to read at home. Once in a month, I will make reading test to see their improvement in English. Besides, for my weak pupils, I have to push them in remedial reading group and they show improvements. That only my support to help them to be fluent reader and I hope I can figure out more ways to help them in reading.
