Purpose
This document describes the observation counters provided by the Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) server which belong to an Alcatel-Lucent Packet-Switched Core Network (PSCN). It applies to the Alcatel-Lucent 7500 Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) beginning with release U3.2.1. The SGSN sever can act either as a 2G only node, a 3G only node or a 2G/3G combined node, thus beeing able to manage users attached either via a second generation (2G) or a third generation (3G) radio access network. In order to have separate statistics, counters specific for the 2G and 3G domain are provided. Moreover combined counters, useful for 2G/3G combined node, are also provided: these combined counters are related to the total amount of users (both 2G and 3G) served by an SGSN server. Counters related to the signaling layers are also provided.

Terminological conventions
This document uses acronyms developed from the English extended form when available. Certain acronyms may be French-based when no English extended form exists. The terminology used is that specified by the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication standardization sector (ITU-T) and European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) standards. The following terminological conventions are used in this document as well: The term 2G SGSN indicates a Serving GPRS Support Node that supports a Gb interface, The term 3G SGSN indicates a Serving GPRS Support Node that supports a Iu interface, The term Combined 2G+3G SGSN indicates a Serving GPRS Support Node able to support both a Gb and a Iu interface, The term BSS (Base Station Subsystem) indicates a Radio Access Network based on the GSM standard. It provides UE (User Equipment) with access to the PLMN. The BSS and the SGSN communicate via a Gb interface,

Preface
The term GERAN (GPRS EDGE Radio Access Network) indicates a Radio Access Network based on the EDGE standard. It provides UE (User Equipment) with access to the PLMN. The GERAN and the SGSN communicate via a Gb interface, The term UTRAN (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) indicates a Radio Access Network based on theUMTS standard. It provides UE (User Equipment) with access to the PLMN. The UTRAN and the SGSN communicate via a Iu interface, The term UE (User Equipment) indicates a subscriber terminal, whether the subscriber is attached to 2G or 3G, The term 2G UE indicates a subscriber terminal attached to a 2G SGSN or a Combined 2G+3G SGSN via Gb interface, The term 3G UE indicates a subscriber terminal attached to a 3G SGSN or a Combined 2G+3G SGSN via Iu interface.

1 Counters for 2G
This chapter describes counters provided for observation of objects of the PSCN: these counters are provided only for 2G User Equipments.
Note:
The term User Equipment (UE) introduced in the UMTS standard includes the equipment known as Mobile Station (MS) in GSM. The descriptions given for the following counters may use the term MS.
