COMPANY PROFILE
BACKGROUND

Umthombo-Moedi Holdings Pty (Ltd)(UMH) is a 100% women owned company.


Umthombo means fountain or spring of water in Zulu and Moedi in SeSotho, We
serve a wide range of business clients both in South Africa and beyond its borders
by providing services that will lead them to path of an endless flow of business
solutions. Our services range from skills training and development,
management services (e.g. project management), events management,
supply and delivery of a wide range of goods and services, import and
export as well as a variety of IT and Financial solutions. We do not only
provide skills training , but our end goal is to eventually assist in placing the
candidates we have trained into jobs they are best suited for. It is our passion to
change peoples lives for the better, especially Historically Disadvantaged
Communities by ensuring that their socio-economic advancement is achieved.

OUR VISION
Our vision is to be the leading multi disciplinary facilitator in providing strategic
solutions to the public and private sectors. The following skills gap has been
identified, these include: Matric (Grad 12) Mathematics, Computer Literacy,
Vocational Qualifications, Study Skills for self Development, Basic Computer
Literacy, Advanced Computer Training, Goal setting, Teambuilding, Leadership and
Management, Managing Diversity, Financial management, Entrepreneur, Project
Management and HIV/AIDS skills courses.

GOALS
• We set up accredited training centers in all 9 provinces and surrounding
offices.
• We train the people of the local community, skilled and unskilled.
• We provide life skills training for the community and social responsibility
programmes.
• We offer both theoretical and practical training to equip the community to
work in the local and provincial areas via selected corporate institutions. We
also apply the organizations code of conduct in their working environments to
make sure that they are ready to enter the workforce with all the basic
business skills like, telephone, filing, finance etc.
• We facilitate transparent and effective governance that will save cost and
promote support for community leaders with effective tools to showcase their
leadership, measuring feedback and progress to align and integrate
development plans set against realistic goals and feasible targets (as per

• Through our technologies for instance, we offer banking accessibility to the
unbanked communities with minimum charges and in other instances no
charges at all.
• It is UMH’s commitment to plough back to the communities part of our profits
• Our business solutions don’t need beneficiaries to travel from rural areas to
cities in order to access services, we can provide, rather we bring services to
the communities wherever they are.

AIM
Our aim is creating employment and empowering individuals and community based
projects through shared services approach that will contribute to our
underprivileged communities. We bring the correct training and learning
interventions to address competency gaps within organisations and individuals. The
consultancy draws on a wide variety of experts in relevant fields to facilitate

learning and development. UMH specializes in learnership training, learner
registration with the relevant SETA’s. Claiming of skills development levy and the
development of learning material that is NQF aligned.

UMH has the facilities, assessors, moderators and materials available that will suit
the community needs. Promote the sharing of knowledge, experiences, best
practices and support partnership among all the communities in South Africa.

We create an environment of lessons to be learned from each other and also to


inform the factors of success in relation to poverty alleviation and reinforcing
democracy governed by equality.

Our ultimate reward is a model optimized to eradicate and carry Africa into a new
economy able to manage its scare resources to surpass the pitfalls of the 1st world

TRAINING PHILOSPHY
UMH introduced a robust curriculum which addresses key knowledge component.
The focus of the programmes is towards building a strong knowledge base on the
various components that enables an individual to function efficiently in his
environment. The competency framework is centered on the successful integration
of four phases that make up the knowledge components.

Each of these knowledge components are addressed during the training process by
developing skills that are directly related to the competencies required.

ABET
• Abet level 1-3
• Abet level 4 is done by means of an independent exam.
• Umthombo-Moedi uses assement body for the verification process.

TRAIN THE TRAINER


• Train the trainer is a 3 day course in facilitating methodologies, where after
the learner is a facilitator registered with EDTP Seta and can register with
Merseta’s.

• Life skills: is the basic life skills training that learner’s may required, for

• HIV/AIDS: A basic HIV/AIDS education workshop that can also be claimed form
skills levy

Umthombo-Moedi Foundation
Umthombo-Moedi Foundation is a section 21 company registered in 2007 under the
umbrella Company, Umthombo-Moedi Holdings(PTY) LTD. The company is
established with the purpose to contribute to the social-economic development of
the South African nation.

To the regeneration of young individuals in particular youth, and the nation in


general. This will be done through various methods and processes depending on the
communities and contents

It is our belief that this intervention will impact on our youth in particular very
positively given that the country has been hard hit by young deaths due to
HIV/AIDS, high un-employment rates, high dropout rates in schools due to teenage
pregnancies and many more challenges.

The programmes will range from structures and modularized to informal and free
flowing.

The programs hope to highlight the capability of the young generation in impacting
the future of their nations. By providing a platform where they will be exposed to
issues affecting this nation and the new generation.

They will engage them in debates that will encourage them to participate in issues
affecting the future of our nation in particular the new generation.

Instill patriotism, giving back to their country and societies. Expose participants to
prisons, hospitals, rehab centers, shelters, hospice etc.

OBJECTIVE

• Establishment of youth camps in the nine provinces in South Africa.


• Establish sports facilities within the camps with a purpose to enhance the
program
• Create educational youth programs that will run throughout the year.

COMMUNITY BANKING – Most of SA still uses cash only – 86% of all
transactions still use cash, and 85% of all salaries and wages are paid in cash. This
is unsafe and inconvenient. People in the 3rd economy do business differently to the
rest of the world. They know that communal buying power far out strips what an
average individual can muster. A community offers a sense of protection especially
to those illiterate people who place their trusts in others. To reach these people with
much needed banking services you need to provide community based services.

The community banking platform enables rural communities to own a bank account
and use to make everyday living easier. Through our products Bank of Athens are
actively involved in helping with job creation, upliftment and poverty. Communities
gain the skills required to survive the 22nd Century. Umthombo designed the
products to take the bank to the people!

Our Vision is to bridge the gap between the traditional products offered by the main
stream banks and the financial services required by members of the second
economy. Our access points will be as mobile as the communities we serve and
bold enough to go where no bank has ventures before. Our products are priced at a
level that it is affordable yet sustainable. The supporting infrastructure will be
community driven so that each person has someone they can lean towards
assistance in their own language.

Our banking solution is in alignment with ANC IT strategic plan and objectives. We
give 30% of our Gross Profits back to the community. We also offer funeral cover,
disability, Airtime, Pre-paid Electricity services via your mobile handset to the
community.

The following products are part of our product suite:

Bank Account / Debit MasterCard – The member will receive an account


from the Bank of Athens that will be linked to his cell phone number. By using
this banking platform your transactions can be done via your cell phone. The
Debit card can be used at any Point of Sale devices, ATM’s and major banking
institutions. This can save the member unnecessary travelling and banking
transaction cost. This is a much safer means of transactions.

Airtime – We can provide, Cell-C, MTN and Vodacom airtime at a reduce cost
via the cell phone. Electronic vouchers can be purchased on the cell phone at
your own convenience.

Pre-Paid Electricity – We provide electronic vouchers for its members via


the cell phone 24hrs a day. This will make life very easy for the working
mothers and community members who are working long hours. Each
municipality will used their own algorithm based on Eskom’s regulations.

SMS/MMS – The community can now receive information down the hierarchy
example; a daily bible scripture will be sent to all members in the community,
churches, schools etc.

CHAT- The community can chat via a FREE instant messaging service offered
/ designed by our IT experts.

Fax to e-mail – We have formed a Strategic Partnership to provide this


packaged to our members.

Personalized Website – We offer a personalized website for each


community. This will enable the community to do online Marketing, which will
be good revenue stream once critical mass has been achieved. This will allow
the members to access information from past events eg: such as
photographs. Future events will be diarized on the website with all the
relevant details of their community events etc. Each individual member of
the community will have his own personal account on the website, which will
offer the following;

- A 20 MB Free space, to Blog with.


- Own personal diary
- Access to their bank statement

E-mail address – We offers each community member a FREE e-mail address


for life.

Funeral and Family Insurance – We have form strategic partnerships
which develop a package best suited for the targeted community and its
members.

Mobile Handsets / Computer Hardware - Personalized handsets and


Computers can be provided to the community at reduced prices. This various
from entry level to most advanced specifications.

Our Business Model - Supports wealth and job creation. Umthombo


Moedi business model is to provide the community with a focused offering of
a bank account to people who cannot meet the minimum requirements, and
the high cost of today’s banking services. Having total control of their money,
clients will be able to transact whenever they want to, from wherever they
are, avoiding the cost of transport opportunity for the unbanked to have
access to a secure and efficient payment mechanism.

MOBILE METERING – Umthombo developed a Mobile meter reading proof of


concept for Eskom; the system consisted of a tiny program that an Eskom
downloaded onto a cell phone. The program allowed the customer to provide
Eskom with their latest electricity meter readings and also provided the customer
with access to their account- and customer information.

Six hundred Eskom customers took part in the pilot. Ninety five percent of the
respondents that installed, registered and tried the system were able to submit their
monthly reading in seconds. Mobile meter reading systems saves time and money.

The system sends out a monthly text message reminder to subscribed ratepayers
when readings are due. The ratepayer enters the meter number on a cell phone
and sends the data to our server. Our server interacts with the customer in real-
time or at predefined intervals. The customer chooses to submit readings via SMS,
USSD or through a special user interface installed on his cellphone.

GOLF SCORECARD SYSTEM - The Score Card system offers Golf Clubs a
complete club management system. At its core, Score Card is a flexible
membership system. The membership system is extended by adding optional
modules each providing features from member-access control to scoring a golf
game.

The Score Card system is hosted by us and configured to each individuals club’s
requirements. The Golf Club has no server hardware or IT resources requirement.
Once installed, the system will be accessible via Club intranet, IVR (Voice prompted
telephone system, where available), Club website can cellphone. To use the system
features members will simply access either of these channels or call the club to do it
on their behalf.

ScoreCard takes the pain out of Golf scoring and score card administration.
Members are able to use their cellphone to score their game. Each affiliated
member’s club handicap is automatically populated in the Scoring system to
prevent handicap fraud. When the game has been completed the scores are
electronically checked, signed, submitted and captured. Scores are available
instantly for score boards at tournaments and competitions. Handicaps are
instantly calculated and updated when a complete electronic score card is received.
Score card signing is completed through interactive SMS.

CARE PAL – Facilitates support information aimed at empowering the customer
to obtain assistance without having to make direct contact with human support
services. CARE PAL is a powerful first line support tool that compliments other
support channels such as the support website, IVR and telephonic services.

The Built-in “offline Browsing” feature offers the user access provider information
even when the device is not configured or not connected to the network. Support
telephone numbers, trouble shooting guides, FAQ’s are always handy.

A Feature rich user interface makes the software blend in with the company’s
corporate image. The solution is designed in such a way that using it is very simple
and intuitive. Detailed instructions are available on every menu.

BROADBAND – A Total broadband solution can be implemented by BCS Group
including WiMax, 3G connectivity. E-mail and other services can be implemented
for users. A total VSP (Virtual service provider) can be created for the Client. All
backups (onsite and Offsite) will be handled by the VSP.

Hosting facilities will be available as part of the VSP offering. BCS Group is a
platinum provider of Alcatel-Lucent: the largest telecommunication company in the
world. VOIP call centers’ can be implemented and maintained as well as automated
PABX systems.

BCS Group is also a gold partner for Microsoft etc. A total outsources solution can
be created for all the hardware and software requirements within the client.

the market rates today.

REVENUE COLLECTION – A web-based Revenue Collection system has


been developed handling all aspects of debt collection. It integrates with all
relevant role players including lawyers, courts etc.

PROCUREMENT- Umthombo has designed and implemented various Supply


chain management systems in government sectors national, provincial and locally.
The system handles all tender processes including RFQ’s etc.

Ntombi Mhlongo is currently a Director of Umthombo-Moedi Foundation.

She has served as Chief Operations Officer for the African Access International
where she was involved in bringing overseas investments into South Africa.

She has conducted an advanced research in the Southern Africa especially post
independent politics. She is well traveled and has studied in the universities within
RSA viz. University of Zululand where she majored in education then, and
University of Natal then as well as abroad namely Edinburgh University where she
graduated in Masters in Education, Glasgow where she did doctrate and London
Institute of Education of University of London.

She was a member of a team of experts who contributed to the present educational
policies of the South African Government. She was a teacher for 13 years as well
worked as a researcher at University of Natal then. Also at their University, she
worked at Student support Services which was created to integrate Black students
in what was historically a Whites only institution.

She’s worked as an Executive Director of Malibongwe (a women’s development


agency). This was a NGO created to assist women to establish income generation
projects. She’s worked as General Manager/ Chief Director in Government. She also
served as an advisor to Cabinet Ministers in issues of transformation particularly
Gender equality and affirmative action.

Ntombi has a vast experience working with youth obviously as a teacher. As a


student in the UK, she was appointed as the 1st. President of the student movement
there.

On her return to South Africa she was a Chief Director in a government Training
Academy. She established and coordinated a youth training programme in a form of
learnerships which was meant to prepare them to be integrated into a state
Department. After this program these students became even more advanced
compared to the long serving members. In the above mentioned Cadet programme,
she had to recruit and select eligible youth throughout the country, compile the
training programme content, negotiate with other institutions which were
appropriate. Co-ordinate high profile presenters in order to expose youngsters to
these individuals.

She was also an Executive Director of the Education Development Trust as a


successor to the late Minister of Communication Department Dr. Ivy Matsepe
Casaburi. Amongst other projects, the EDT was responsible for offering scholarships
to South African youth nationally.

Thoko Beverley Shomang is a Director Black Network Supplies PTY (Ltd) and
founder of Umthombo Moedi Foundation. She qualified as Teacher in Sekhukhuni

College of Education in Polokwane, business commerce at the University of Lesotho,
communication and business Hope College USA and Public Management with Wits.

She has amassed wealth of knowledge over a period of twelve years in Foreign
Office of the Government of South Africa. Whilst employed in this office she held
different responsibilities, which entailed promoting political and economic relations
with foreign countries. She worked as diplomat in Lesotho. On her return she
managed different countries such as UK and Central Africa region.

Thoko is an entrepreneur she currently in property development. She is also taking


advantage of the experience and the network she has built over time in her line of
work. She looks for opportunities in foreign countries with the intention to
eventually do business outside the country. She is into trading and supply of
commodities.

She has also been involved in several community projects in the US and in South
Africa. She worked for different NGO’s such as the Women Development Foundation
in South Africa which was created to empower women in leadership roles. We ran
workshops to prepare women who were going to be in parliament. Thoko also
worked as a volunteer for different community organizations such as the Red Cross
in the US, dealing with HIV/AIDS and disaster management. Worked for Life Line in
the US where she was counselling people faced with different challenges suicide,
depression, physical abuse etc. Trained to work with children with down-syndrome
where she was giving family support to parents who are faced with children with
that condition. Also provided support to Orlando Home in Soweto South Africa.

Charmaine Botha - Started her career in 1985 at Eskom in the IT deparment,


looking after students, writing mentor ship programs for them, in order to make sure
that their career plan matches their job environments. Charmaine was selected to
do her MDP at Henley as part of a pilot program to develop managers in their
leadership skills in the work place.

She developed programs such as ABET, & mentoring students in their career. As a
hobby she did PC training in Soweto which part of the RDP program and social
upliftment program for PDI’s who never had the opportunity to be exposed in the
1980’s with technology such as Microsoft training and how to use the computer as a
tool to enhance their skills, like Excel etc.

She did her 1st year MBA at Henley in the UK. She started her own business in
Eskom (MWP Business & Communication PTY Ltd). While at Eskom she was head
hunted for Dell computers to head up government sector. She worked as National
sales manager for Bytes technology Group running Voice, data solutions in the
Telecoms arena. She then took up a job as country manager with Crystal Decisions /

Business Objects (Business Intelligence) working environment running Middle East
and Europe from South Africa.

She then worked at EOH/MIT for Mr. Lucky Khumalo in the outsourcing space
managing all the HP customers in the managed arena in Africa.

She is currently doing training in PDI / communities arena for the last 20 yrs. She
started her own company called MyMobie which is a Community Bank sponsored by
the bank of Athens. The objective of this bank is to take the banking to the
unbanked in South Africa. Her passion is to train the unskilled communities in SA
and also do skills upliftment and training as a career. She is very committed in
placing people that she trained back into the workforce & corporate environment to
make SA a better place. She has a good network of government business people
who she met along her career in the last 23 yrs being in the Information Technology
sector. She is currently an affiliate member of the (SAIM) South Africa institute for
Managers since 1994 as well as the international body for Service Managers (AFSM).

Our Team has an associate network of approximately 25 business executives,


academics, researchers, strategists, Trainers, Professional software consultants,
Technical consultants, economists and project managers. This innovative, dynamic,
performance-based team inspires and powers success. Our success has been built
on vision, expertise and has worked with clients in numerous industries on
technology projects in SA as well as abroad. One of the directors has been involved
in the AFSM (Association for Service Managers) a worldwide organization
benchmarking business methodologies and strategies in the corporate industry for
more than 15 yrs. She is passionate about supporting entrepreneurs;

She believes that entrepreneurs are lifeblood of a growing and wealth creation.

Our approach is highly customized to each client’s situation and industry and
community requirements. 100% of the company is owned by African women, and
30% of GP of company proceeds channeled back to community projects.
