Define the following: (i) R.M.S. value. (ii) Average value and (iii) Peak factor. (iv) Form factor of a sinusoidal quantity. Two inductors have self inductance of 0.1 mH and 0.4 mH and a mutual inductance of 0.15 mH. What is the value of the coefficient of coupling between them? Define regulation and efficiency of a transformer. The following readings were obtained from OC and SC tests on 8 KVA, 400/120 V, 50 Hz transformer. OC Test on LV side 120 V 4 A 75 W SC Test on HV side 9.5 V 20 A 110 W Calculate the voltage regulation and efficiency at full load 0.8 P.F lagging. Explain the principle of operation of DC generator. A 6-pole, Lap wound armature has 840 conductors and flux per pole of 0.018 Wb. Calculate the emf generated when the machine is running at 600 rpm. The armature of a 6 pole, DC shunt motor takes 300 A at the speed of 400 rpm. The flux per pole is 75 mWb. The number of armature turns is 500. The torque lost in windage, friction and iron losses can be assumed as 2.5%. Calculate: (i) Torque developed by the armature. (ii) Shaft torque. (iii) Shaft power in KW. A 3-phase, 4-pole, 50 Hz induction motor has a star-connected wound rotor. The rotor emf between slip rings at standstill is 40 V. The rotor resistance and standstill reactances are 0.4 and 2 respectively. Find: (i) Rotor currents per phase at starting and slip rings short circuited. (ii) Rotor currents per phase at starting if a star connected rheostat of 5 per phase is connected across the slip rings. (iii) Rotor emf when the motor is running at full load at 1440 rpm. (iv) Rotor current at full load and rotor power factor at full load. Explain the types of damping devices used in the measuring instruments in detail with neat diagrams.

Obtain the voltage and current relationships in all network elements. Explain the current division in parallel circuit. Explain phasor representation of alternating quantities. A coil of R = 4, XL= 3 connected in series with a condenser of R = 8, Xc= 8, this combination is connected to 4 resistor. Across this series circuit a voltage 1000 is applied. Calculate: (i) Current. (ii) Voltage drops across coil, condenser and resistor and (iii) Power absorbed by the circuit. Take voltage vector along the reference axis. With neat circuit diagrams, explain the procedure for conducting OC & SC tests on a given singlephase transformer to predetermine its regulation and efficiency. A 100 KVA, 1000 V / 10000 V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer has an iron loss of 1200 W, find the maximum efficiency at 0.8 power factor lagging if the copper loss is 500 W with 6 A in high voltage winding. Also calculate the corresponding regulation if the equivalent leakage reactance referred to HV is 10 ohms. A 4-pole d.c shunt generator with lap-connected armature supplies a load of 100 A at 200 V. the armature resistance is 0.1 ohm and the shunt field resistance is 80 ohm. Find (i) total armature current (ii) current per armature path, and (iii) emf generated. Assume a brush contact drop of 2 V. Derive the torque equation of a DC motor. A 200 V d.c shunt motor takes a total current of 100 A and runs at 750 rpm. The resistance of the armature winding and shunt field winding is 0.1 ohms and 40 ohms respectively. Find the torque developed by the armature. Explain the principle of operation of three phase induction motor. A 3-, 6-pole, 50 Hz cage motor is running with a slip of 4%. Find: (i) Speed of rotating field relative to stator winding. (ii) Motor speed. (iii) Slip speed. Write short notes on deflecting torque. A moving coil instrument having a resistance of 20 ohm gives a full scale deflection when the current is 10 mA. Calculate the value of the multiplier to be connected in series with the instrument so that it can be used as a voltmeter for measuring potential difference up to 80 V.

Explain the behavior of AC through R-L-C parallel circuit. The applied voltage to an ac circuit is V = 200 sin 314t and the current flowing is I = 20 sin 314t. Find the following: (i) Peak values of voltage and current. (ii) Frequency of the voltage and current. (iii) Effective values of voltage and current. (iv) The circuit element and its value. (v) Power factor. Draw the phasor diagram. Draw the general schematic of a single phase transformer and explain its working principle. A DC shunt generator supplies a load of 10 kW at 220 V through feeders of resistance 0.1 ohm. The resistance of armature and shunt field windings is 0.05 and 100 ohms respectively. Calculate: (i) Terminal voltage. (ii) Shunt field current and (iii) Generated emf. A 20 kW, 250 V dc shunt generator has armature and field resistances of 0.04 ohm and 200 ohm respectively. Determine the total armature power developed when working. (i) As generator delivering 20 kW output and (ii) As a motor taking 20 kW input. A 3-phase, 10-pole, 60 Hz induction motor has a star-connected wound rotor. The rotor emf between slip rings at standstill is 40 V. The rotor resistance and standstill reactances are 0.4 and 2 respectively. Find: (i) Rotor currents per phase at starting and slip rings short circuited. (ii) Rotor currents per phase at starting if a star connected rheostat of 5 per phase is connected across the slip rings. (iii) Rotor emf when the motor is running at full load at 700 rpm. (iv) Rotor current at full load and rotor power factor at full load. Explain the moving iron attraction type instrument with a neat diagram. A moving coil instrument has a resistance of 12 and gives a full-scale deflection when carrying 50 mA. Show how it can be adopted to measure voltage up to 700 V.

A series R-L-C circuit consists of 100 ohms resistor and an inductor of 0.318 Henry and a capacitor of unknown value. This circuit is supplied by 230 V, 50 HZ supply and draws a current of 2.3 ohms, and the current is in phase with the supply voltage. Find the value of the capacitance, and the power supplied by the source. Explain about 'j' operator. Discuss the constructional features of transformers. Draw neat diagrams. Calculate the flux in the core of a single-phase transformer having a primary voltage of 230 V, at 50 Hz and 50 turns. If the flux density in the core is 1 Tesla, calculate the net cross-sectional area of the core. Derive the emf equation of a DC generator. A 4-pole DC shunt generator with lap connected armature supplies a load of 100 A at 200 V. The armature resistance 0.1 ohms and the shunt field resistance is 80 ohms find the (i) total armature current. (ii) current per armature path. (iii) emf generated. The armature of a 2-pole, lap connected DC shunt motor takes 250 A at speed of 600 rpm. The flux per pole 60 mWb. The number of armature turns is 600. The torque lost in windage, friction and iron losses can be assumed as 1.5 %. Calculate: (i) The torque developed by the armature. (ii) The shaft torque. (iii) Shaft power in kW. The power input to the rotor of a 110 V, 60 Hz, 3-phase, 6-pole induction motor is 50 KW. It is observed that the rotor emf makes 180 complete cycles per minute. Calculate: (i) Rotor frequency. (ii) Synchronous speed. (iii) Slip. (iv) Rotor speed. Explain any one type of moving iron instrument in detail with a neat diagram
