Course Schedule/Important Dates Statistics 371, Lecture 4, Spring 2014

December 20, 2013

This is the course schedule which will keep you informed of course assignment deadlines and other important dates. Below is a tentative course schedule. This schedule is subject to change and may be adjusted as the need arises. All quizzes and homework are due at 11:59 PM of the deadline day. This course schedule will be posted on Learn, emailed to you and posted on our course webpage, which is connected to my webpage. Please note the following when you read this schedule. 1. The modules could be called weeks, but this labeling is more convenient for the summer offering of this course which is condensed to eight weeks. 2. I would argue that there is no perfect way to format this schedule. In several instances, I arguably post an assignment too early; this, of course, might lead to confusion, but I am trying to avoid having students overlook an assignment. I will explain what I mean in the following items. 3. Please look at the rst entry for module 1, January 2126. You need to study Chapters 1 and 2 and submit two homework assignments on or before 11:59 PM on Sunday, January 26. Immediately after you submit an assignment, you will be given access to the solutions to that homework. In addition, at some later date your teaching assistant (TA) will grade your submission and provide feedback on your errors, if you made any. Homework solutions for Chapters 1 and 2 will be released to the entire class, including students who did not submit homework, at 12:01 AM on Monday, January 27. You must take a quiz on Chapters 1 and 2 on or before 11:59 PM on Wednesday, January 29. This event is listed in our table with module 1 even though, chronologically, it occurs during module 2. The idea is that you will have received the correct homework solutions, although perhaps not feedback from your TA, before you are required to complete a quiz.

The time devoted to these different goals should be determined by the expressed needs of the students. Module 2 provides a good example of how I see this dynamic playing out. You have six options for discussions during module 2, on any of the days: Monday, 1/27; Tuesday, 1/28; and Wednesday, 1/29. The key feature is that all discussions occur before the deadline for quiz 1. Below are the three goals the TA will have. (I have listed them in my assessment of importance, from most to least; it is important, however, that the TA and you 2

together decide on the relative importance.) (a) Prepare students for quiz 1. (b) Help students complete the homework for module 2due the following Sunday. (c) Answer specic questions about the homework for module 1due the previous Sunday. (Admittedly, this is similar to item (a); what I mean are questions like, Show me how to do homework question 2; such questions typically are not of general interest. 4. Note the following features of the schedule. (a) Because of the midterm on Thursday, March 6, quiz 6 is delayed one weekto Wednesday, March 12. (b) There is a snowball effect from item (a); quiz 7, which should be on Wednesday, March 12, is delayed until Wednesday, March 26, because Wednesday, March 19 falls during Spring Break. (c) I get back on schedule by having quiz 8 also due on Wednesday, March 26. If this seems unusually cruel, note that the main consequence of this catching up is that your entire last week of classes can be devoted to reviewsee module 15. (d) Note that the midterm exam will cover Chapters 19 (modules 15) and that the nal exam will cover Chapters 1022 (modules 614). In particular, note that the nal is not cumulative. For each exam there will be three or four options (time and day) available for taking it. You will have an opportunity to vote for the various options. If you have any questions about this schedule, please email Bob Wardrop at wardrop@stat.wisc.edu.
