Simple Prayer
As I begin writing my articles on prayer throughout the upcoming year, I want to start with what is called simple prayer. Richard Foster, a Christian author who has written on spirituality and prayer for more than 30 years, begins his book on prayer with chapter one being titled, Simple Prayer. Simple prayer is the notion that prayer does not need to be complicated. So often, it seems like people are intimidated by praying because they think that they need to do it correctly and say just the right words. Simple prayer is the idea that we begin with simple request and words to God. Just like when a child begins to speak, they do not automatically begin speaking paragraphs and sentencesbut with small simple words that have great meaningwords like mama, dada, and no. So also with prayer, we do not need to begin with elaborate prayers and use big words. We begin with what is on our hearts and what is immediate for us. Some of the simple prayers are: Help! Thanks. Why? These may not be the most eloquent prayers, but they do communicate what is in our heart to God and cry out to the one who has made us and seeks to be in relationship with God. And that is the point of our prayers. I want to finish the article with a couple of sections from some books on prayer. Below are quotes from Anne Lamont and Richard Foster for your reflection on prayer and more specifically what is called simple prayer. Anne Lamont in a book on prayer writes, I do not know much about God and prayer, but I have come to believe, over the past twenty-five years, that theres something to be said about keeping prayer simple. Help. Thanks. Wow. You may in fact be wondering what I even mean when I use the word prayer. Its certainly not what TV Christians mean. Its not for display purposes, like plastic sushi or neon. Prayer is private, even when we pray with others. It is communication from the heart to that which surpasses understanding. Lets say it is communication from ones heart to God. (Anne Lamont, Help. Thanks. Wow. The Three Essential Prayers, p.1) Simple Prayer is beginning prayer. It is the prayer of children, and yet we will return to it again and again. Jesus, for example, calls us to Simple Prayer when he urges us to ask for daily bread. There is a temptation, especially by the sophisticated, to despise this most elementary way of praying. They seek to skip over Simple Prayer in the hopes of advancing to more mature expressions of prayer. They smile at the egotistical asking, asking, asking of so many. Grandly they speak of avoiding self-centered prayer in favor of othercentered prayer. What these people fail to see however is that Simple Prayer is necessary, even essential, to the spiritual life. The only way we move beyond self-centered prayer (if indeed we ever do) is by going through it, not by making a detour around it (Richard Foster, Prayer, p. 10-11)

upcoming Sundays. Please take some time to look over the lesson and reflect upon the questions in preparation of the upcoming weeks in worship.

With the narrative lectionary, we are now focusing upon the story of Jesus. One of Jesus first acts of public ministry is to call disciples who will follow and learn from him. This text from John has Andrew announcing that they have found the messiah and then invites others to come and see. How are we called by Jesus today? How do we invite others to come and see the messiah?

January 12th:
Text John 2:1-11
We hear of Jesus first sign/miraclethe turning of water into wine. The miracles and signs are to point us to who Jesus is and what he has come to accomplish. The people at the wedding are astonished that the good wine was served last. What does this story tell us about Jesus?

January 19th:
Text John 2:13-25
Today the story is Jesus driving out the money changers and the animals from the temple. He challenges the people to see the temple as Gods house and not a marketplace. In this story he hints at what his true mission is about with the prediction of his death and resurrection.

January 26th:
TextJohn 3:1-21
The text is the familiar story of Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews, coming to Jesus to ask questions about God. Jesus tells Nicodemus that everyone in the kingdom of God must be born again. Later in the text is probably the most family verse in all scripture, For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.

OPPORTUNITY FOR PRAYER

During 2014, one of my emphases for ministry is prayer. As a way to be intentional about praying, I will be offering two different times each month for people to gather for the sole purpose of praying together. We will gather for about a half hour and spend the time lifting up a variety of requests and whatever else is on peoples minds. The date in January for these prayer gatherings are: Sunday, January 12th @ 7 PM and Wednesday, January 29th @ 7:30 PM. Any questions, please talk with Pastor Steve. If you are unable to come, you are still invited to take time during these appointed times to pray and lift up a variety of requests and petitions to God.

The Jr. High Youth will be hosting their annual Valentine Dinner this year on Friday, February 14th at 6:00 pm. Tickets will be sold at the Welcome Center beginning Sunday, January 26th. The price for tickets is $10.00 for Single, $20.00 for couples, and $25.00 for couples with children. Babysitting will be provided in the preschool room for those with children. The menu for the adults is all-youcan-eat Lasagna, Garlic Bread, Salad, Dessert, and Applesauce. The children will be served Chicken Nuggets, French Fries, Applesauce, and Dessert.

MISSION CARE/ COMMUNITY CARE:

St. Pauls next Red Cross Blood Drive will take place in the preschool area on Sunday, February 2nd, from 8:00 AM to 12 NOON. A great big THANK YOU to all who take time to donate this precious gift! Watch for a sign-up sheet on the Welcome Center if youd like to reserve a time slot. Tell your friends and relatives they are welcome to drop in on that morning as well! The food pantry item being collected in January is canned soups. Please place your donations in the wooden box in the hallway near the kitchen, or in the basket near the main entry doors. Donations are given to food pantries in Seymour at Provisions, Anchor House, and Human Services. Our congregation continues to pray for 12 yr. old Emily Hume, who has been on our prayer list since July when she was hospitalized at Riley Hospital for Children with a heart ailment brought on by a viral infection. Several members of our congregation either attend school with Emily or work with Emilys parents. A collection effort for Ronald McDonald House at Riley, where Emilys mother has been staying, is taking place at Seymour-Redding Elementary School. The school is collecting aluminum pull tabs in honor of Emily. The aluminum tabs will be used to raise money to help fund Ronald McDonald House, where parents can stay to be near their children hospitalized at Riley. On the Welcome Center is a collection jar for aluminum pull tabs. So far we have filled the jar more than twice! We will add our tabs to the collection effort taking place during this school year at Seymour-Redding Elementary. Lets help them reach their goal of collecting one million pull tabs!

SENIOR CARE:
YES! Cinema FREE movie for Seniors 55 & older on Tuesday, January 7 th. A carpool will leave the church parking lot at 12:15 and return between 4:00 and 5:00. Please sign up at the Welcome Center so transportation can be arranged. The movie title will be available a few days prior to the event at www.mojo1029.com. Questions? Please contact Trish Tangman. Borchers Breakfast Club (BBC) meets every Thursday from 9:00 to 12:00 for breakfast and social time. YOU are welcome to join the group just for breakfast, or for the entire morning! Leftovers from weekly BBC breakfasts are available to be delivered to anyone who would appreciate this effort. If you or someone you know might like an occasional delivery of breakfast goodies, please let Joe Hoene or Trish Tangman know.

HEALTH & WELLNESS CARE:

It is time for a healthy New Years resolution!! Join us for a simple, low-impact exercise time for interested seniors on Thursday mornings. Interest has been expressed in a program that would help seniors with balance and other important physical issues. If you know of someone who might like to lead such an exercise time, or if you know of any appropriate video resources available, please let Trish know. We would like to begin sometime in January!

STEPHEN MINISTRY: Monthly Stephen Minister group meetings will resume in 2014 at St. Paul from 6:30 9:00 PM on Monday, January 27th. Stephen Minister training continues on Saturday mornings from 8:30 to 11:00. January dates include January 11, 18, and 25. An additional meeting will take place Wednesday evening, January 8th, from 6:30-9:00. Topics for Januarys training sessions include Community Resources, Grief, Depression, and Suicide. Please continue to pray for our trainees and their instructors.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY What are prayer shawls? The purpose of a prayer shawl is to give someone a tangible example of Gods love and care. The shawl is made of soft yarn so the recipient can wrap up in it and feel Gods arms around him or her. A prayer shawl is made with prayer. The maker of the shawl prays before, during, and after they work on the shawl. Sometimes we know who we are making the shawl for, and sometimes we dont, but we pray for the person who receives it just the same. St. Paul Lutherans Prayer Shawl Ministry will resume meetings on January 7 th and 21st at 1:30 pm in the Church Narthex. Everyone is welcome to come. If you do not know how to knit or crochet and would like to learn you are also welcome. BOOK BUZZ Book Buzz will meet at 1:00 PM on Monday, January 27 in the narthex. The title of the book to be discussed is Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. The book is available through Evergreen. OFFERING ENVELOPES FOR 2014 The 2014 Offering envelopes are available in the narthex. Please contact Nate Otte with questions. BLANKET MAKING The blanket makers will meet January and going through March. Two times are available: Mondays at 1:00 pm and Wednesday at 9:00 am. They make the blankets in the adult Sunday School room. Some blankets are ready for knotting they are located by Mission Outreach room. If you have questions contact Wanda Engelau. SUNDAY SCHOOL PIZZA/MOVIE/GAME DAY
The Sunday School children are invited to attend a fun-filled afternoon at the church on Sunday, February 2 from 11:30-2:00. There will be pizza, games, and a movie for the kids. We invite all kids to attend!

TREATS
TREATS Craft night on January 15th 46:00. The meal will be chili, chicken and rice soup, grilled cheese, veggie sticks, apple slices or grapes and Krispy treats.

ADULT & KIDS BELLS

Kids Bells will practice on Wednesday January 15, 22, 29 at 5:30 and 6:00. Team 1 (5:30 group) will play at both services on Sunday, February 2. Team 2 (6:00 group) will play at both services on Sunday, February 16. Adult Bells will practice on Wednesday January 29 at 6:30 pm.

KIDS PRAISE GROUP

Kids Praise Group will not be practicing in January. We will practice again on Wednesday, February 5 at 6:30.

LUTHER LEAGUE
Luther League will be going to Columbus to play Laser Tag on Sunday, January 5. We will be leaving the church at 11:30. Each child needs to bring money for lunch and $6.00 for Laser Tag. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the church office. Luther League will be taking down Christmas decorations on Saturday, January 11 at 9:00am.

JR HIGH YOUTH
Jr. High Youth will be going to Columbus to play Laser Tag on Sunday, January 5. We will be leaving the church at 11:30. Each child needs to bring money for lunch and $6.00 for Laser Tag.
