Matrices Gauss Jordan Method

algebra, math November 19, 2012 Leave a comment Matrices gauss jordan method: (http://math.tutorvista.com/algebra/gauss-jordanelimination-method.html) 1) To reduce a matrix using the elementary row operations 2) To describe the solution set of a linear system Ax=b whose augmented matrix (A|b) has been reduced. Putting (1) and (2) together, we will have a systematic method for solving systems of linear equations. Solving a linear system means determining the unique solution, or deciding that no solution exists, or finding a parametric description of the set of the complete solution set. Gauss Jordan Method Example 1: Lets solve the system 21 32 = -6 51 + 42 = 31 We form the matrix (A|b) and reduce it: 2 5 1 5 1 0 1 -3 4 -3/2 4 -3/2 23/2 -3/2 | | | | | | | -6 31 -3 31 -3 46 -3 row 2:= 2/23 x row 2

this is the matrix (A|b)

row 1:= 1/2 x row 1

row 2:= row 2 5 x row1

The reduced matrix represents the system 11 + 02 = 3 01 + 12 = 4 Which has the unique solution (x1,x2) = (3,4). This is also the unique solution to the original system. Examples on Matrices Gauss Jordan Method (http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=CsTOUbeMPUo) Lets solve the system x1 + x2 + x3 = 5 x1 + 22 + 33 = 8 We form the matrix (A|b) and reduce it: 1 1 1 0 1 0 1 2 1 1 0 1 1 3 1 2 -1 2 | | | | | | 5 8 5 3 2 3 row1:= row1- row2 the matrix is reduced row 2:= row2 row1 the matrix is in echelon form this is the matrix (A|b)

The reduced matrix represents the system 11 + 02 x3 = 2 01 + 12 + 23 = 3 which has infinitely many solutions: x1 = 2 + x3, x2 = 3 23, x3 = any number We wrote the solution to the exercise on the previous page as two equations: x1 = 2 + x3, x2 = 3 23, (x3 R) Notice that these two equations have the exact same meaning as one vector equation: When we write the equation this way, it becomes clear that the solution set is the line through the point (2,3,0) that is parallel to the vector (1,-2,1).
