Interpretations for WRG 7th Edition Rules- !!"
This set of interpretations for WRG 7th edition is the fourth and most minimal effort to date in hi!h e tr" to rite do n ho !ertain aspe!ts of the rules are pla"ed. It is #$T a set of rules in itself. It is a des!ription of ho the #orth %meri!an &o!iet" of %n!ient and 'edie(al Wargamers uses the WRG 7th edition rules in sponsored tournaments. )opefull"* it ill also help "ou ad+udi!ate games in a non,tournament setting should pla"ers -e una-le to agree on a suita-le solution. It is our attempt to -ring a !ertain amount of uniformit" as to ho 7th .dition is pla"ed. The per!eption that 7th is pla"ed the same here(er "ou go is a m"th. If that ere the !ase* umpires ould not e/ist and neither ould this -oo0let. This is the 1Internet1 2ersion of the 1993 4oo0let. I5(e ta0en the t o pages of !hanges that !onstituted the 1993 -oo0let (and handed out separatel") and grafted them onto the 1996 -oo0let. I5(e updated the ./perimental Rules se!tion (deleted 0night edge rule)* other ise* it5s no different from the 1993 hard !op" -oo0let. The interpretations presented here ha(e -een re(ie ed in ad(an!e -" the #%&%'W Rules 7ommittee and Phil 4ar0er. The" ill go(ern all #%&%'W sponsored games. If a deta!hment differs from the parent -od" -e!ause one is irregular and the other is regular* then the deta!hment and the parent -od" !annot -e +oined together. The onl" e/!eption is hen either the parent or the deta!hment is elephants. When a deta!hment +oins its parent -od" it is mo(ed and -e!omes the last ran0 or ran0s of the +oined unit. This o!!urs hen the deta!hment mo(es to +oin the parent -od" hi!h !annot mo(e during that phase. The parent -od" !annot ne!essaril" +oin the deta!hment unless it !an ma0e a (oluntar" interpenetration* et!. When a unit ants to deplo" a deta!hment the usual a" is for the deta!hment to simpl" mo(e for ard and ta0e up its ne position. This is easil" done hen the deta!hment is in the front ran0 of the !om-ined unit. It is also eas" to do hen the deta!hment is on the flan0 of the unit. If repositioning is ne!essar"* the reformed unit must then form a -lo!0 in the same position and ith the leading edge of the unit remaining stationar". E4AM%&E@ The Fhmer pla"er must either use a !ounter to mo(e the 8)I -a!0 through the elephants* an allo a-le -ut disordering interpenetration* or must e/!hange ran0s. 4" e/!hanging ran0s the unit ill reform on the same spot ith the elephants in the front ran0 and the 8)I still +oined as the rear ran0(s). The important thing to remem-er is that a deta!hment !annot simpl" mo(e through its parent unitH it must o-e" all other rules a-out mo(ement and interpenetration. When a deta!hment lea(es its parent -od"* it mo(es as if it ere a full" independent unit. %ll mo(ement is -ased on the position the deta!hment o!!upies on the -oard at the !urrent moment. ?nless the parent -od" is of a t"pe that the deta!hment !an interpenetrate* the deta!hment most often must ma0e turns to mo(e a a". The same applies for the parent -od" lea(ing the deta!hment. If a deta!hment is e(er more than its ta!ti!al mo(ement from the parent -od"* it must use its ta!ti!al mo(ements (follo ed -" mar!hes if possi-le) to reposition itself to ithin that distan!e. If the parent unit -rea0s then the deta!hment -rea0s automati!all". %n unatta!hed deta!hment !ould possi-l" pro(ide support to the parent -od" if of a !orre!t troop t"pe and lo!ated in the proper position. %tta!hed deta!hments do not pro(ide support. If a deta!hment #$T $; .8.P)%#T& routs and meets its parent -od"* then the deta!hment is automati!all" rea-sor-ed -" the parent and the hole -e!omes a disordered -lo!0 ith the

deta!hment forming the rear ran0 or ran0s. If the deta!hment is not 8I* then the parent unit must test a(ering first. If the parent unit sha0es the deta!hment is rea-sor-ed -ut the hole unit is then sha0en* not merel" disordered. If a deta!hment $; .8.P)%#T& routs and meets its parent -od" then the parent unit must test a(ering. If the parent unit sha0es and is then met -" the routing deta!hment* the hole unit routs (remem-er that elephants al a"s -urst through). If the parent unit does not sha0e then the elephants -urst through and !ontinue to rout* the" do not re+oin the parent -od". It is important to remem-er that routing elephants !an ne(er -e rallied from rout. If a general +oins ith a deta!hment he does not gain operational !ontrol o(er the deta!hment. The deta!hment still must remain ithin its ta!ti!al mo(e of the parent -od". If the parent -od" routs the deta!hment still routs. %ll rules go(erning the use of deta!hments still appl"* regardless of the general5s presen!e. 1nits3 % -od" that in!ludes transport elements must in!lude them in the 19 element limit on unit si=e. This onl" applies to things su!h as flaming )TW. If "our opponent has a temporar" field fortifi!ation (palisades for e/ample)* "ou !an e>uip "ou troops ith flaming arro s and su!h. When so e>uipped* ea!h figure of an element must ha(e in!endiaries. When shooting* if an" uses in!endiaries then all elements so e>uipped must. The use of in!endiar" )TWs -" the &panish is e/plained in WRG 8ist 59. Ignore the need to prepare the in!endiar" eapon. That as a re>uirement of pre(ious rules editions and no longer applies. &u!h eapons do not shoot li0e a ranged eapon. When in!endiar" missiles are used on stone,thro ers ea!h figure on the model is ta0en to -e armed ith an in!endiar" missile* all firing together in one shot. If a pla"er using stone,thro ers intends to use in!endiar" shots* that must -e listed as part of the des!ription for the stone,thro ers and must -e paid for in determining the !ost of the stone, thro ing unit or units. The use of other forms of in!endiaries is optional and does not ha(e to -e de!lared -efore use. The general !an ta0e into a!!ount e(ents that he !annot 1see1. This !omes up most often hen redire!ting troops on one side of the ta-le to retire and then mar!h to the other side of the ta-le in response to an enem" mo(ement* et!. While the a!tual enem" mo(ement is un0no n to the units -eing prompted and the enem" might not ne!essaril" -e (isi-le to the friendl" general5s element* the general !an redire!t units in his !ommand. We assume that the general has other means of o-taining the information* i.e.* messengers and the li0e. E4AM%&E3 % unit of #orman )7 in edge routs a unit of .arl" Imperial Roman legionaries. %lthough -oth pla"ers 0no that the unit has routed onl" the Roman units that see the rout 0no a-out it and must a(er test and onl" #orman units that see the rout gain the -enefit of -eing eager (assuming the" are other ise >ualified for this morale state). (&ee Pg 99 Para 7 and 1B). If the rule in >uestion does not mention (isi-le or seen or some similar* then 50no n5 is assumed. If a general has a standard then his position is (isi-le o(er the top of inter(ening troops. If three ran0s deep* the third ran0 must !onsist of a hole element. Thus* a &!"thian or similar 87 unit of 3 figures !ould not form edge sin!e it ould ha(e a partial element as its third ran0.
