To allow users to perform pinch analysis on their own plants as easily as possible, this free spreadsheet has been

supplied. This performs the key targeting calculations and plots, as follows: Input of stream data (either as CP or heat load). Calculation of composite cur e data, Problem table, energy targets and pinch temperature. Plotting of composite cur es and !CC. Plotting stream population o er temperature range and basic grid diagram. Tables and graphical plots of ariation of energy and pinch temperature o er a range of "Tmin.

#rea and cost targeting is not performed because of the considerable e$tra comple$ity, the fre%uent lack of suitable data on heat e$changer coefficients, and the flat nature of most cost& "Tmin plots. Topology traps can still be identified from the graphs of utility use and pinch temperature against "Tmin. 'ost of the composite and !CC in the book ha e been generated using this spreadsheet. It was written for 'icrosoft ($cel) but should run in similar compatible spreadsheets* howe er, fully correct operation cannot be guaranteed. The spreadsheet was the winning entry in a competition run by the Institution of Chemical (ngineers for young process engineers, and was written but !abriel +orwood. ,hen the spreadsheet is opened, it takes you directly to the I+P-T tab, where the data is entered. .n the I+P-T tab, enter the global /min chosen for the problem in cell 01, followed by the stream data. +ote that the data must be in compatible units. The default spreadsheet display assumes that 2I&based metric units are in use, but you can use your own units and alter the cell headings. 3ou can also choose whether to enter the data as specific heat capacity and mass flowrate, heat capacity flowrate (CP) or heat flow. (nter the stream data, line by line. #s you begin each line, cells re%uiring input are highlighted in yellow. 2treams can be numbered, named or both. If a stream changes heat capacity significantly o er the temperature range, enter each segment separately (e.g. as 4a, 4b, 4c, etc.). (nter latent heat streams by assigning them a small temperature difference, say 5.67C. #s data is entered, the spreadsheet automatically calculates the full stream data, which can be seen on the right&hand side of the first tab and on other 8results9 tabs. The program calculates whether a stream is hot or cold depending on the difference between the supply and target temperatures. #ll heat capacity flowrates (CP) should be positi e, ne er negati e. The furthest left&hand tab, I+:(;, gi es a list of all the results tabs, with hyper&links. The results tabs are as follows: T#<!(T2 = Problem table, energy targets, pinch temperature and type of problem (pinch, threshold, multiple pinch, or pinch region) CC = >ot and cold composite cur es

2CC = 2hifted composite cur es !CC = !rand composite cur es !<I: = +etwork grid diagram, shifted temperatures #2 = 2tream data plot, actual temperatures 22 = 2tream data plot, shifted temperatures #T = Inter al tables (heat loads and temperatures), actual temperatures 2T = Inter al tables (heat loads and temperatures), shifted temperatures :T'I+ = ?ariation of hot and cold utility targets and pinch temperature with /min. The last sentence of these calculations, arying /min o er a range, uses a marco and will not work if your spreadsheet security le els are set to >igh* therefore, on the spreadsheet menu go to Tools @ 'arco @ 2ecurity and set to 'edium (recommended) or Aow. To obtain the plots, enter the ma$imum and minimum alue of the re%uired range and the program will then calculate o er the range in B5 e%ual steps of /min
