All blades use the Virtual Interface Card (VIC) mezzanine card Blade servers can be half width or full width
Half Width requires a single server slot (up to eight per server chassis) Full Width requires two server chassis slots (up to four per server chassis

Each blade server includes a mezzanine card IO controller (Full width blades have 2)
Dual-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet connection to chassis Connects to Fabric Extenders (which are part of the blade server chassis)

Vblock Systems use the Virtual Interface Card (VIC)


Provides multiple dynamically configured PCIe bus virtual interfaces Storage connects with Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters (HBA) Network connects with Ethernet Network Interface Cards (NIC)

Each Vblock System model includes two Cisco IP switches Provide IP connectivity from the compute layer to the site network and storage layer They support low latency line-rate 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) FCoE connectivity on up to 32 ports A unified port expansion module provides an extra 16 ports of 10 GbE or FCoE connectivity Ports are licensed on an on-demand basis

SAN Switches in the aggregation layer provide Fibre Channel links between the compute layer and the storage layer In a unified storage configuration, this connection also supports SAN booting of the blades in the compute layer Ports are also reserved for special Vblock System services such as SAN backup connectivity and aggregation uplinks.

File level storage
File storage is presented to the host as a file system and accessed over an IP network Protocols: Network File System (NFS) for Unix, Linux and VMware Common Internet File System (CIFS) for Windows Easy to setup and share access across multiple servers
