Adventures in Missions is an interdenominational missions organization that focuses on discipleship.

We emphasize prayer and relationships in our work amongst the poor. Since we were established in 1989, we have taken over 100,000 people into the mission field, some for as short as a week and others for as long as a year or longer. In several places around the world we minister year-round to "the least of these." What began as a dream in Seth Barnes garage has morphed into a global movement. Annually, Adventures in Missions sends over 6,000 adults, students, and families on mission trips to more than 70 locations on several continents, with their trips ranging from a few days to a few years. We believe that by giving people the opportunity to care for orphans, bring hope to the hopeless, and pray for the sick, lives are transformed. We seek to disciple as Jesus did; our vision is that God would use us to raise up a generation of radically committed disciples of Jesus Christ.

The World Race is a mission trip to 11 countries in 11 months. But its not just a mission trip; it is an adventure of a lifetime. The World Races mission is simple: bring kingdom. We do that by feeding the hungry, healing the sick, raising the dead, cleansing the unclean, and loving the outcast. The World Race challenges participants to have a life-changing experience that affects how they live their lives, serve others, relate to God, and bring the kingdom to earth today. The rst World Race began in 2006 with a group of 22 people who set out on the journey of a lifetime. Making their way through the world on faith, they knocked on doors, slept in streets, and depended on God. Since that rst trip, the World Race has grown and expanded. In 2011, we sent out our 1,000th Racer and expect to send thousands more. Each group of Racers called a squad has a unique country route that spans across the globe. Racers join intentional communities and partner with pre-existing ministries and missionaries around the world. There is a generation of radicals whose heartbeat is to see a changed world. This generation is actively rising to the challenge of seeing the world transformed through tangible expressions of God's love. World Racers are seeing that change and experiencing it for themselves. Racers visit ancient ruins, hike up volcanoes, swim under waterfalls, and experience the vastness of Gods creation. They trade in marketplaces, befriend people caught in modern-day slavery, and strengthen local church bodies around the world. The World Race is a sacrice. Racers dedicate eleven months to relying on God to guide their steps and lead them into situations they would never experience any other way. Racers nd their faith growing strong as they let go of the things of this world and discover a deeper meaning and purpose for their lives.

what is the world race?

In short, the World Race is an eleven month Christian mission trip to eleven different countries around the world. The World Race isnt a typical missions experience, nor is it a Christian spin off of CBSs The Amazing Race. Its an opportunity for young adults to let God wreck their ordinary, status-quo, affluent, comfortable lifestyle and shift their paradigms perhaps shatter them altogether. Adventure, ministry, community and self-discovery mark the the World Race experience; these facets of the Race narrow the gaps between the head, heart, and hands and feet. The World Race is a season of awakening and activation, kick-starting Racers on a life-long adventure of extending Gods kingdom to the ends of the earth.

adventure
There is a little bit of adventure everyday on the Race inside a raft bouncing midst the whitewater rapids of the Nile, in the streets of Bangkok while getting lost, or on a dinner plate. The greatest adventures might be the ones God guides you through in your experience of and relationship with Himself.

ministry
Theres no one ministry thats typical of the World Race. Fear not, your extensive background in VBS will be exercised, but you will also explore forms of ministry that are new to you. On the World Race, you are free to experiment and to be creative; you can dare to love Gods people as radically as Jesus did, the way youve always dreamed of but for some reason couldnt dare to. Like walking into the bars of the red-light district of a Southeast Asian city to befriend prostitutes or sitting beside and holding a leper in India, who is considered untouchable.

Whether youve grown up attending church all your life or just recently got acquainted with God, youve learned some theories on what ministry is. Consider the World Race as your laboratory to test those theories and discover new ones.

community
One of the best and most challenging parts of the World Race is communityauthentic, deep, hard, messy yet beautiful. Within your squad of fifty or so, youll be put on small teams of fiveeight people and spend eleven months serving and living together. The World Race is a journey of transformation not only of the places you serve in but among your teammates. Through the fighting, laughing, and crying, God will transform you through your teammates. These people who were once strangers, just names and faces on a computer screen, become some of your most cherished brothers and sisters.

self discovery and spiritual growth

For many of us, our accomplishments, baggage, responsibilities, and titles hide our true identity. The World Race offers a safe, gracious environment where you can peel back those layers and become who you are truly meant to be. The World Race is a journey that sets you on the path of intimacy with and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. As a World Racer, you will have coaches walking beside throughout the year. They come visit every few months to teach, encourage and counsel you. Coaches desire to see a generation rise up and claim its kingdom inheritance. They share their hearts and lives with you that you might be awakened and mobilized to your destiny. Many people look at the World Race and get the wrong idea. We believe that it is one of the most powerful missions mobilization tools to come along in years!

why do people sign up for the world race?

Everyone wants to find their place in the world. Some want to see how God is moving in the world and join Him. Many want to embark on a journey that challenges and expects more from them than theyve demanded of themselves; theyre ready to accept the challenge and rise to the occasion. Inside many resides a deep well of compassion that has barely been tapped. They desire to be poured out as Gods response to the brokenness and needs of the world. Some are already on a pilgrimage to understand what God made them for, familiar with the metaphor of life as a journey, especially a long one. The World Race brings their sojourning and seeking into increasing alignment. Some represent a generation that suspects that theyre on a path that is too easy; theyre growing uncomfortable with comfort and unsettled by settling. Maybe theyve been tempted to sell out to a career track and a lifestyle that doesnt or shouldnt define them. Maybe the versions of themselves that the world is starting to see is not the best one. Some are exploring the possibility that God is calling them to overseas missions for long-term, possibly for life. Theyre unsure of where theyre being sent or what theyre supposed to do once there; the World Race offers a sampling of various ministries across the globe. Not just a few wild eyed adventurers are looking at this and thinking, Thats it, thats what I need to do! Thousands resonate with the idea, maybe dismissing it as impractical, but secretly wishing they could say goodbye to societys expectations for a year and go on a pilgrimage.

why The World Race?

What were offering is not just another mission trip. The World Race taps into an ancient human compulsion to take a spiritual pilgrimage. Aussies have their walkabout, Muslims have their Haj, and most Western Europeans have a gap year between high school and college. American college students have an abbreviated bacchanal - a weeks trip to Ft. Lauderdale in the spring that barely voices the urge to go somewhere and do something different. Many young people are coming of age without being truly initiated into the rest of their lives; theyre waiting for a meaningful rite of passage. They are under-challenged and ultra-coddled. They didnt sign up for the future theyre being handed. As the World Race grows and gains a broader audience, this generation is already responding in greater numbers. This generation wants to do more than just see the world and do good things for it; this generation wants to be fully alive. This generation wants not just to be significant but to bring significance. The World Race seeks to be the impetus to set this generations growing momentum in motion.
