R & C of Sexual Activity: Lesson 6, Analysis of Recent Developments in Repro Health

Type of Work: Indy Product: Word Doc/Embedded Class Time: 1 Period Class/1 HW EOC: Embed/Snip (Lesson 6) Due: 3 Periods
Concept: Below are some of the most recent developments related to reproductive health in our society. Your job will be to provide an analysis of these developments. As we discussed in the beginning of the unit sex ed is a values driven topic. These issues are inherently controversial themselves because although there are facts that may help you understand them; ultimately you see these facts through the prism of your own perception (values, morals, upbringing, etc.)! The sources listed are just a starting point, remember that any information may be biased and it is your job as an educated consumer to carefully analyze information for validity, reliability, and bias. Goal: Provide an analysis of the recent developments in reproductive health demonstrating an understanding of content specific information necessary to understand each issue (ie. What strains are protected against in the HPV vaccine, approved locations for the Safe Haven law). Complete each level (not just 1) working from top/down based on level attempted. ----------------Extra Credit Offered for Each Question-------------------

Topic 1: The HPV Vaccine Debate

Information Necessary to Understand Topic

Potential Sources

Basic Overview: HOV vaccines are given as a series of three shots over 6 months to protect against HPV infection and the health problems that HPV can cause.

What it Does Protect Against: 1.cervical cancer 2.genital warts 3.cancers of the anus, vagina, and vulva

What it Doesnt Protect (Think!): 1.Pregnancy 2.Herpes 3.AIDS

% of Cervical Cancer Protection: 75%

% of Genital Wart Protection: 90%

My Level of Agreement: Highlight or Underline One (I think this is.) Really Really Bad For Good for Society Society Potential Advantages Potential Disadvantages 1. guards against the 4 HPC 1. dont know long term affects strains + 2. prevents many HPV infections. 2. too young for vaccinations Abnormal Pap tests, and cases of cervical cancer + 3. Lowers risk of STDs 3. teens will feel the vaccination + will protect them and obtain risky sex behaviors. -

How Many Shots:3

Is there a shot for boys? What is it called?

Does this promote promiscuity or should we take advantage of something that could potentially help us?

Yes. Gardasil
Cost: about $130 per dose.

I think that we should take advantage of it because while it doesnt cause many health problems, its better to be protected from it in general than to get it and then have to find treatment for it. Preventing it in the first place is better than treating it in the end.

Level 5/Extra Credit/Going Beyond: Define Herd Immunity and explain how it applies to the debate.

Topic 2: Emergency Contraception (Plan B)

Plan B Website 1

Basic Overview: The FDA decided to make the drug available without a prescription only to those 15 and older, while the Justice Department announced an appeal and asked for a stay of the April ruling. Intended Use (Why people use it): If they have unprotected sex or their condom fails they dont have to worry about the risk of getting pregnant. How close to failed / no contraceptives: (Time Frame?) Up to 5 days

Do You Need a Prescription?: No

Cost: between $10 and $80

Mechanism of action-how it works: Emergency contraception is the method of contraception that can be used to prevent pregnancy in the first few days after intercourse. It is used for emergencies following unprotected sex, contraceptive misuse, contraceptive failure, or rape.

Does this promote people not taking accountability for their choices or provide an alternative to someone not wanting to get pregnant?

It does both. Anybody who willingly has sex has to realize that they have a risk of becoming pregnant. If theyre not ready to take care of their child then they need to make sure they are being extremely safe, which is only so effective or just stick to abstinence. But for these people its just giving them a way to not face the severity of their actions. Yet if it is someone who was maybe raped, then its a way to not get pregnant because they dont want to deal with bringing a child into this world that was placed there because of an unfortunate set of circumstances.

Level 5: How is this similar/different than the abortion pill (RU-486)?

Topic 3: The Condom Availability Debate

Information Necessary to Understand Topic
Basic Overview:

Potential Sources

There has been an increase in reported STDs among adolescents and has prompted many communities to take action to protect their youth. One proven method is to provide comprehensive sexuality education along with school based programs that make condoms available to sexually active youth.

2. Child might feel judged when they go to ask for condoms. -

In your opinion do these statistics warrant public educations involvement? No, because the only thing that should be warranting public educations involvement is the education of the public school students. They can warm the students about all of the consequences that can come with sex but as far as intervening with the sex lives of their students then I dont think they have the right to do so. What does a schools condom availability program look like? Who gets condoms, where, when and how?

3. School might be given criticism and feel like theyre promoting sexual activity. -

So the big question is how would condom availability affect the student body? Does it promote unhealthy behavior or are you providing a healthy outlet for those that will do it anywaysif so is it even a schools place to get involved ?

I dont think that it will affect the student body that much. Those who have sex will continue to do so and those who dont most likely wont decide to have sex just because condoms become easily available to them. If they wanted condoms they could just go get them. Whether or not the school has condoms wont influence peoples views on it or whether or not they decide to have it. It really isnt the schools place to get involved. The children have to be able to make their own decisions and be smart about it. If they decide to have sex, and have sex without condoms, then they have to realize that there will be consequences. There wont always be someone by them holding their hands throughout life so they have to learn how to make wise decisions.

What is Illinois Law exactly?

You can leave your baby, up to 30 days old, with a staff member at any hospital, fire station, police station or emergency medical services provider in Illinois

Does this promote people not taking accountability for their choices or provide an alternative to someone not able to provide for a child?

This promotes people not taking accountability for their choices. There are plenty of other ways that will help the mother and the child than just leaving them. During the pregnancy, they could find a nice family that will adopt the child. Just abandoning your child and having them live through foster homes their entire life, if no one adopts them, can end up affecting them their whole life and cause them to feel like they dont mean anything.
