Its really good that youre not afraid to try new techniques, Samantha. Quite often playing about is the best way to learn as you also find out how NOT to do things along the way! Acetate has so many uses you can print onto it to produce inserts and overlays for your cards, use them inside apertures, stick peel-offs onto them then colour them in with Sakura pens, have them as wraparounds for cards, and you

We all need some help and advice at times, so ask the Card Expert for solutions to your cardmaking quandaries

Card Expert

Amazing acetate
I always like trying new techniques and, as a result, have developed a habit of buying items on a whim when I dont have any idea on how to use them. Recently one such purchase was a pack of acetate and Im struggling to come up with ways to use them please help! Samantha Peterson, Cardiff

can also heat emboss on them if they are the heatproof variety. Try putting them through die-cutting machines and making your own embellishments from them. You can stamp onto acetate using an inkpad such as StzOn or use them to create shaker cards. You have to be careful when layering them onto your projects though, as lots of adhesives will show through. Try to come up with alternative ways to fix your acetate on for instance with brads and eyelets, and use ribbons for wrap-arounds.

Masked marvels
I have seen a single stamp used in a project in duplicate. By that I mean the entire stamp is used but then sections of the same stamp is also included as part of the main image. I dont know if I am making myself clear here, but I would love to know how it is done. Can you explain how this is achieved for me please as I would love to have a go. Paula Symonds, Colchester

Fantastic fantasy
Q
I recently overheard someone in a craft shop talking to their friend about stamping with Fantasy Film. Ive never heard of this before and was too shy to go over, admit I heard their conversation and ask what they meant! Can you explain it to me please? Catherine Halfpenny, St Albans Fantasy Film is a very thin sheet created from polyester lms and can be used to sew, create collage art, make embellishments and many other ways that will bring brilliant light and luminescence to your work. You can create luminous effects that will enhance all your paper and fabric projects by making your own sheets of dazzling Fantasy Film and Fibre fabric! It can be used either with or without the use of heat. If you use it plain you can cut, punch, sew or die-cut it to create embellishments or, if you decide to heat it with either an iron or heat gun, you can fuse several layers together to produce great effects. You can use Fantasy Film alongside Fantasy Fibres, sandwiching them between the sheets. You can mix and match colours too. When you use it for stamping, you have to ink up your chosen rubberstamp (not a clear stamp) then lay it facing up on a rm surface. You then lay over the inked image three to four layers of lm (and bres, if you are using these too) then place a sheet of parchment paper over the top of it all and rmly heatpress using an iron. The iron has to be a dry iron not a steam one. Where the stamp touches

the lm, it will fuse leaving a beautiful impression, allowing you to cut around it and use it on your card. The best thing to do, Catherine, is to buy a few sheets and have a play to see what different effects you can come up with. To see one idea though, turn to page 64 where the people at The Craft Shop have used Fantasy Film in their project.

The technique youre talking about, Paula, is masking. You cover part of a stamped image so that other images may be placed partly over it without the overlapping area being visible. The results are amazing with this but you do need a lot of patience and careful prep work. For instance, if you want to create an overlapping border of hearts but only have a single heart stamp, you will need to stamp the single heart image onto your surface then again onto a Post-it note. You then cut carefully around the Post-it note image and lay it over the original stamped image. Once you have done this, stamp the image again, overlapping the Post-it note. Continue moving the mask along, stamping as you go, until you have completed your border. The same method applies to when you want to take a component of an image. Stamp the original image and then mask it off. Instead of then applying the stamp to an inkpad again, clean the stamp so no ink is remaining and colour in the section you want to duplicate with stamping pens. It is a long process but the results are well worth the effort!

Essential inks
Q
I am quite new to cardmaking and am completely bafed by all the different types of inks you can get. I know they all have different qualities to them but Im not sure which ones I should use for which technique. Could you explain the differences for me please? Martha Davies, Norwich There are a lot of different inks available but you are quite right in that they have different qualities to them. Here is a breakdown of the most common ones that you will nd in craft stores:

Archival-quality ink:
This is acid free and photo safe. This is the ink you should use in projects that you want to keep for a long time like scrapbook layouts and memory albums or keepsakes.

solvent-based ink but thicker in consistency than most dye inks. They are slow drying so are the preferred inks for embossing. They work best on uncoated paper and wont fade if they are embossed.

like pigment ink, is slow drying.

Chalk ink:
This is a dye ink that appears chalky when dry. It gives a softer, muted nish to your projects so is great when you want more of a subtle effect.

Permanent ink:
This, like dye and pigment inks, is a water-soluble or solventbased variety. Unlike dye or pigment ink though, permanent ink dries by evaporation. Once dry this ink will not smear so is great for when you are using watercolours with them.

Distress ink:
These are slowdrying dye inks which can be spritzed or wiped with water after inking an image. You can also wipe the inkpad directly on paper to create an aged look. They work well for shadow stamping, sponging or creating backgrounds.

Dye ink:
These are water based and solvent based. This type of ink dries very quickly so wont work with embossing powders. They do work well, however, on coated papers and porous surfaces but tend to run on non-porous surfaces. They will fade over time so shouldnt be used for projects that you want to keep for a long period.

Embossing ink:
You can buy this either clear or slightly tinted. I prefer the tinted version as I can see clearly the stamped image. This ink is used specically for use with embossing powders. It has the consistency of pigment ink and,

Teas-made
Q
I was given some tea bag folding papers for my birthday but Im not quite sure how to use them. Could you help me get started by showing me some of the basic folds, please? Beryl Chambers, Wolverhampton Tea bag folding (or kaleidoscope folding as its also known) is a paper folding technique, with Dutch origins, using small pieces of printed paper to form a geometric design. When you start using this technique you should remember that there is more than one way to create different folds, so experiment and nd ways that are easier for you to remember. It may also be useful for you to buy a book or a guide that you can refer back to. Ask in your local craft shop if there are any that they either have in already or can get in for you. If you dont want to buy a book then perhaps you can look in your library to see if there are any you can borrow. Here are some examples of basic folds for you you may nd that you can adapt these to create your own versions so that you end up with styles that are completely unique to you. I always say, half the fun is in experimenting!

I would just like to say how fab the ultimate verse insert designer CD is. I have verse editor and thought that was good but this is just fab. Love the way you can add images to the insert. I couldnt believe how easy it was to use and insert your own verses and images. Well done. Carol My wife has just purchased a copy of your ultimate verse insert designer and as usual I have to go through it and tell her how it works. This has to be the most user friendly software of its kind I have ever seen, its so easy to use compared to other programmes we have had over the years. Your help les and tutorials are just great. Well done, Alan (special needs ICT tutor) I received your Ultimate Verse Insert Designer as a Christmas present. All I can say is Wow! I have waited a long time for this CD to come out and it has been well worth the wait. It is even better than I had expected. I have 2 of your previous CDs one of them being the verse editor plus and I was very happy with those. There is so much on this new CD I dont know where to begin. I especially love the help section where your voice guides us through anything we are not sure how to do. Thank you for all of the hard work that you have put into this CD making it your best one yet. My inserts look like the posh expensive cards that you could spend a fortune on in the shops. Thanks again Karen, keep up the good work. Cheryl I ordered your ultimate verse insert designer on Friday together with some other goodies and they arrived today. Cut a length of blue stitched ribbon and wrap around the paper join, securing on the reverse. Fix the panel to the centre of the card blank using doublesided tape. Mount your chosen topper onto mirri card, trim to leave a narrow border then x to the centre of the panel with foam pads. Go over the details of the gift with gold Twinkles then set aside to dry.

4. Christmas Sales
Cut a sheet of Watermelon Sensation cardstock in half, then fold in half to make a 6x6 card blank. Trim diagonally across the front of the card so the front is a triangular shape. Trim your chosen paper to slightly smaller than 6x6, then mount onto mirri card, trimming to leave a narrow border. Stick down to the inside of the card blank. Use your cut-off triangle as a guide to trim a sheet of contrasting paper down to size so that it is slightly smaller than the card front, then x into position. Mount the shopping girl image onto Island Breeze cardstock, round off the corners, then mount again on to mirri card, rounding off the corners once more. Fix to the centre of the card so that it overhangs the card front.

5. Christmas Shopping
Mount an image of a girl shopper rst onto mirri card then onto Island Breeze cardstock, then nally onto Watermelon Sensation cardstock, trimming to leave narrow borders each time. Mount towards the top of the A6 cream card blank with double-sided tape. Cut out the Christmas Shopping! greeting and mount onto Island Breeze cardstock, trimming to leave a narrow border. Fix onto the card blank underneath the main image with foam pads.

6. Seasonal Trio
Create a 734x4 card blank from Watermelon Sensation cardstock. Cut a 312 strip of patterned paper and stick down to the centre of the card blank. Cut a 234 strip of Strawberry Sensation cardstock and stick to the centre of the patterned paper. Mount three images onto mirri card, trim leaving a narrow border, then mount all three in a row across the centre of the card, using foam pads for the centre image. Go over the detail in all three images with gold Twinkles and set aside to dry.

tried & tested

xcut
ve never used pricking templates before so I was intrigued to see how easy it was to use the Stitch & Craft board and see the effects you can achieve from it. As a complete beginner to this technique I picked the Xcut starter pack as the subject of this months Tried & Tested as I hoped it would do as it says on the tin and contain everything I needed to get me started with no need for extra materials.

The Xcut Stitch & Craft Starter Board & Tools set is put to the test this issue to find out whether its a perforating and embossing fans new best friend!
to the foam mat which wasnt explained and one side is slightly softer than the other, and I found it easier to emboss on the harder side. This may be something that everyone is expected to know but Im sure Im not the only person who would, as a complete beginner to this type of technique, need advice like this to get the best possible results. Once I got used to how to use the template on vellum I decided to see how it works on cardstock. As cardstock is not transparent like vellum, I laid it under the template. I was really happy with the results that I got with cardstock for the pricking but, again, the embossing didnt give as striking results as I would have liked. Because the embossing tool had such a small ball on it I think this is where the problem I had with it lay. If they had provided a double-ended embossing tool with two different-sized balls so that you can get a more even nish to the larger embossed areas I think this would have been better. I followed the link to the website provided on the back of the packet to see what inspiration and tips they had to help me come up with more ways to use the template and, after much searching, I found a video explaining how to use it, which was quite useful as it also said how you can use a ne-liner through the pricking holes to make dots on your chosen surface rather than holes. The effect it gave was really pretty and it opened up more ways to use the template, for instance you can follow certain patterns to add doodling to your craft projects. One big let-down with the tools was the quality of them the top of the embossing tool actually came off and got stuck in the lid, so I had to be careful not to push the lid on too hard from then on as it would keep coming off otherwise.

stitch & craft starter board & tools

to stop movement during use. It also has handy millimetre rules down two of the edges and punched holes down a long edge so that you can store it away in a folder.

Using the product

I mentioned before that I had hoped that this pack would enable me to start using it without having to nd any additional materials and, apart from some masking tape, this was the case. I started by just having a play to get used to the different sections on the template. It was fairly straightforward to use and quite self explanatory, although there are instructions on the back of the pack to help you with the placement of the vellum on the template (ie you need to place the vellum on top not underneath the template to get the embossed effect). In all honesty, the pricking side of the template I was impressed with, but the embossing side was a bit more of a let-down. It required some trial and error on my part for how much pressure was needed on the vellum as there were a few times where I went completely through the vellum. There are also two sides

Pros Template packed with lots of different patterns Easy to use Everything included with pack to get you started Basic instructions given on pack Cons
Quite expensive Cheap quality tools Not enough hints and tips to help beginners

The product
The Stitch & Craft Starter Board & Tools retails for 19.99 and in the pack you get a metal template, an embossing tool, a pricking tool, a foam mat and a pack of 10 vellum sheets. On the back of the pack you get brief instructions on how to use the product, an example of a nished card and a web link for more information. It is used to create perforated and embossed patterns, corners and borders not only on vellum for parchment work but on paper and cardstock too. The template is a few inches smaller than A4 size which works well as you can tape the stencil to the surface you are working on

Conclusion
I found that this product, although it produced nice pricking pattern results, was quite poor quality and not worth the 19.99 price tag. If it was cheaper (say 10 15) or had better-quality tools then I would have been happier to buy it. I would have liked to have seen a double-ended embossing tool in the pack as the one provided was very small. There are also several templates available so if you already have some tools then I would recommend you buying these instead as there are some gorgeous designs covering a range of styles and tastes.

hen choosing your Christmas papers, sometimes its nice to think outside the box and opt for colours and imagery that are that little bit different. The hot pinks, purples, oranges and blues in your free Eastern Promise paper collection would be perfectly suited for Indian summer/monsoon-inspired papers yet they work so well for Christmas too. The extra elements, such as the faux gold foiling and jewels, just cry out to be embellished so, when putting your cards together, try adding items such as adhesive gems, glitter glue, beads and mirri card and watch how the papers come to life. Weve even added ocking to the girl in the Christmas Shopping card on page 18 to make her furlined clothing look realistic. There are so many different images to choose from that you can use a large number of techniques such as dcoupage, paper folding, popouts and shaped cards. Some of the toppers are also a perfect size to make co-ordinating tags to go alongside your Christmas cards.

Measure and draw a line 1 around the four edges of the card then, using a craft knife, cut out the square. Cover the front of the card and re-cut the centre square out. Cover the inside-back cover with your chosen paper. Cut a 312 square from Admiral cardstock and matt with the gold mirri card leaving a narrow, even border. Select your square image (I have chosen a star) and again matt with the mirri card. Wrap the wire around a pencil, forming a spring, and attach to the back of the star image. With the card closed, stick the other end of the wire to the centre of the square. Decorate with gold Stickles and add a greeting matted onto mirri card. To complete the design, cut out a border and mount with mirri card.

The Great Magazine Hunt

Dear Creative Cardmaking, I absolutely love reading your magazine but I have a problem nding places to buy it. I cant always make it to my nearest craft shop where I rst found your magazine because its 30 miles away and I can never seem to nd it in WHSmith. Please can you let me know what different outlets sell your magazine? Lisa Solomon, Saxmundham, Suffolk CCM: When we launched Creative Cardmaking we decided to support the craft stores and make the magazine available purely through these outlets, so unfortunately you will not be able to nd it through any newsagents at all. If you dont live close to a craft shop, Lisa, you can also buy the magazine through a number of internet stores. If you go to our website www.creativecardmakingmagazine.co.uk you will be able to see a list of our stockists. If you dont have internet access, try looking at the adverts in the magazine to see who does mail order and theyll be able to post a copy out to you if they have it in stock. Failing that, you can always subscribe to the magazine. Because we try to encourage readers to visit the craft shops we dont offer any special discounts or free gifts, but if you want to make sure that you never miss an issue then turn to page 81 where you will nd more information. I hope this helps you!

Dear Creative Cardmaking, I just wanted to write in and share a useful tip that I picked up whilst watching a demonstration recently. The lady that was demonstrating was using some scissors when someone made a comment about how hers have become really gunky and she didnt know how to get it off. The demonstrator suggested she used baby wipes to clean the blades so I went home and tried it myself and to my utter amazement it worked really well my scissors are looking as good as new! Im now using baby wipes to clean lots of other metallic surfaces and wanted to pass on this tip to others who have found themselves with the same problem. Mary Crawford, Dunstable CCM: What a great tip! I know I have scissors that have become clogged up with glue and sticky tape so Im going to give this a try myself. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Good As New

Happy Customer
Dear Creative Cardmaking, I have been buying your fantastic magazine since the very start and it has fast become my favourite card magazine. The papers you give away each issue never fail to disappoint and you always provide something different every time, and this has encouraged me to try out new styles. My friends have all said that I have come on leaps and bounds with my cardmaking over the past six months and Im sure a large part of this has to do with your magazine as the projects are all explained really clearly for me and are easy to understand. I wanted to let you know what a wonderful job youre doing and to thank you for producing such a great magazine. Well done! Barbara Metcalfe, Nuneaton CCM: Thats brilliant to hear that your friends have noticed the difference in your cardmaking skills and that the magazine has encouraged you to try styles that you wouldnt usually go for. Thank you for all the wonderful things you have said about the magazine too, it really does put a smile on our faces when we hear about happy readers!

Dear Creative Cardmaking, I only found out about your magazine when I purchased issue 5 and Im hooked! To ensure I receive further issues, I am denitely going to subscribe as it is such good value for money. The free papers in issue 6 screamed Get Well to me and I have enclosed the card I made. I hope you like it! Looking forward to future issues. Shelagh Metselaar, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen CCM: Thank you for writing in with your lovely comments about the magazine. We always enjoy seeing our readers cards, especially ones using the free papers, as it gives others extra ideas on how to use them. Well done Shelagh.

s Christmas approaches we all have lots of cards to make, so its nice to be able to create eye-catching cards that you know will put a smile on the faces of the people receiving them. Using die-cut shapes makes comical cards easy to create. There is such a vast array of machines and dies available that you really get spoilt for choice, but here is one that has put a smile on our customers faces. By adding stick-on goggle eyes you can make the reindeers look quite jolly (although this is not suitable if youre sending the card to young children). Adding glitter or glitter glue to the snow strip at the top of the wall adds that little bit of Christmas sparkle.

Add a touch of sparkle to a loved ones Christmas card this year by combining diecutting and jewels

ith the new designs from Graphic 45 in mind, I decided on a light and fresh approach to Christmas. The pale pink & green check with the pink & white spot on the reverse of Love Me Tender from the Baby and Bride collection just gave me the inspiration to create this card. As big and bold cards have been a hit with all my customers this year, it was inevitable that this one would be! I have found making large square cards so easy and enjoyable, as everything just ts together so well. Also, the Flower Soft worked well on the boot, with Glitter Jewels acting as ice on the blade.

to create
Take an A3 sheet of white cardstock and score in half. Measure 21cm down and cut off the excess this will give you a 21x21cm card blank. Measure a piece of Kanban soft green mirri card to 20x20cm then, using doublesided tape, attach to the front of your card. Cut a piece of green cardstock to 18x18cm then layer this onto the mirri card using double-sided tape. Trim a piece of the Love Me Tender checked paper to measure 17.5x17.5cm, apply double-sided tape to the spotty

side and layer onto the green card as shown. Measure and cut a piece of mirri card to 17.5x4.5cm, apply double-side tape to the reverse and stick onto your card approximately 14 of the way up. Cut a piece of the green cardstock to measure 17.25x4.25cm, apply doublesided tape and layer onto the mirri card. Carry on this process by next cutting a piece of the Love Me Tender card, but this time apply the double-sided tape to the checked side. Using the Christmas Noel Cricut cartridge, cut out the ice skate at 5. Soft green mirri card was used for the base, white hammered-effect card for the boot, and embossed white

pearl paper to layer. Apply pale green Flower Soft around the top of the boot using PVA glue and allow to dry. The boot layers are then stuck together using a glue stick. Add pale green gems to the lace holes of the boot, plus a sprinkling of Iced Crystal Glitter Jewels to the blade using PVA glue, to look like ice. Use sticky foam dots to apply your boot to the bottom right-hand corner of your card. Type the Have an ice Christmas sentiment on your computer, print out, trim then matt and layer using the leftover scraps. Fix this to the top-left corner of your card.

I love using napkins to make cards you never know what result you are going to get from the Dcor Crackle. The nished card never looks like it started life off as a table decoration it takes time and a little bit of forward planning because of the drying times, but the end result is worth it. The crackle effect always provokes comments as it produces such unusual results. One thing to remember is that you cant leave the mirror card crackled but unpainted, as the crackle can go off and wont work as effectively. I like to use small jam jars or other air-tight container to store unused paint so that it doesnt go to waste. Try your rst card you will be hooked on the result!

Do not overwork as the napkin will split. Leave to dry. Create an attention-grabbing, modern card in a few simple steps this Christmas by using just a small selection of well-chosen materials

es folks, Christmas is here again and what a lovely time of the year it is for cardmakers! There is something about Christmas that lets your imagination run wild, using glitter card, embossing powders, embellishments, gems, punches, ribbons, glitter pots and more! I love adding sparkle to my cards and it doesnt even have to be messy or ddly! The glitter card that I have used here doesnt rub off on your ngers and gives a high-impact effect. Using a white colour to spell out the word snow gives it a more realistic touch and the gems add extra bling! When choosing accessories for your cards, pick out an accent colour like I have done with the green ribbon its matched to the stripe and snowake in the patterned papers and helps bring the card together.

Create an eye-catching Christmas card in a few easy steps from just a single pack of patterned paper

to create
Using A4 pale blue cardstock, score along the A4 gatefold line, then fold and crease to make a clean edge. Keeping this to the left, apply double-sided tape along the edge and the inner fold line. Stick the second piece of pale blue cardstock to this, ending with a card base measuring 22.5x21cm. Trim off the overlapping card. Cut dark blue cardstock in two sizes 12x20cm and 6.5x20cm. Layer with silver mirri card and backing paper, and afx with double-sided tape to the base card as shown.

Trim a piece of dark blue cardstock measuring 14x10cm, score 2cm each end widthways, crease and fold under. From the top, at an angle,

cut lengthways approximately 3cm of the folded ap to give a neater nish. Matt and layer as before the remaining 10cm square with mirri card and paper, choosing a design that is complete. This section is attached to the base card with extrastrong double-sided tape. Stick the left-hand side rst in the space between the two front panels. Attach the right-hand side, pushing up to achieve a bevelled effect. Finally open the card, stick another backing paper to the inside-back and either add a plain paper insert or print a message to complete.

ardmaking for most of us is a passion, but we all know materials can be expensive. I have made this card using backing paper and cardstock. Although extra embellishments and peel-offs are optional, they add to the overall appearance of your card, making the difference between a handmade card and a homemade card! The Dovecraft Winter Wonderland packs come in three sizes, each with 12 different designs, which means that the same card can be repeated over and over and each one will look different. Adding glitter gives a different dimension and a festive look, and Christmas is a great time to use it.

Send someone a fun card that they can play with this Christmas, like this fantastic kinetic treat

his card is so much fun its like playing with a Rubiks Cube and its much easier to make than it looks. Ive used a photo of my children in the snow on one of the hidden pages. You could do something similar, or you could just use patterned paper and embellishments. Its a great way to announce the birth of a new baby with the details on each page, or for a wedding anniversary; you could include a picture of the couple on their wedding day and use colours to coordinate with the bride & bridesmaids or to represent the anniversary. The design can be easily adapted to make any size of square card. Adjust the measurements to ensure that the doors just meet in the middle and that they dont overlap at all, otherwise the pages will catch as you unfold the card.

From the card, cut four rectangles each measuring 14x7cm. Ink the edges if desired. Measuring along the long sides, score and fold all four at 3.5cm and 10.5cm to make mini wardrobe-folded cards. Crease well and also fold back along the same lines and crease again. Open out. On two of the pieces, use a light pencil mark to divide each door in half (giving two 3.5cm squares on each door). Cut it so that it is straight on top and wavy on the bottom. Once it is cut out, x 3D foam pads to the back and stick to the top of your card, still leaving the pale blue border showing round the top edge. Cut out four snowmen mum, dad, brother and sister. Fix the dad and sister down at to the card and cut the mother and son images into sections, then layer up with 3D foam pads to add dimension. he papers and laser cuts in the Rayher range are adorable on the reverse of the packaging you are given ideas but once you start working with them your inspiration just runs away! You can create lovely scenes with them and they are so easy to work with. When cutting the snowmen and borders out, use a small pair of sharp scissors that cut to the tip to enable you to get right to the point where you want to cut, giving you crisp, clean lines. All the snowmen vary in size, the smallest being 1.25cm and the largest 7cm. Even the smallest ones have such detail on them, making them fun to work with. There are quite a lot of images on one sheet of the snowmen including icicles, trees and snowballs, so they would be a perfect choice to get your children crafting with you - they would love the scenes that they can create. For something different I used the pastel shades which really work well, giving you a unique card for someone to treasure.

Cut 3.5cm off the short edge of a piece of white A4 cardstock. Fold the remaining card in half to form a base card measuring 13x21cm. Cover the front of the folded card with the reverse of the canvas card, so that the solid pale blue is showing. Cut a section from the top of the Winter cardstock measuring 12.5x20.5cm. Fix onto the front of the card, leaving a narrow border of pale blue showing around the edges. Turn the Winter card over and use the side with no trees on. Cut a small section of the blue snowake printout to attach on the top of your card,

1 2 3 4

Stick the snowmen together with a dab of Glossy Accents to the base of each section then 3D foam on the back. Add the red bows cut from the Christmas trees and borders to the mother and father Snowmen and attach a small red adhesive stone to the centre of each bow. Position your snowmen onto the card, then adhere. Select your message from the Christmas trees and borders and adhere this to the bottom-right of your card using 3D foam pads. Once everything is stuck, add small dots of Stickles to the Christmas trees, then use the Diamond Stickles to create a snow effect around the snowmen and white hills.

using one collage stamp
Claire Hampton
For instance, in this feature I have used paper piecing, dcoupage, shrink plastic, heat embossing and layering techniques in a variety of colours. You can use a stamp as a whole image or just use components of it; a collage stamp is great for techniques like this as they have easily identiable sections to separate.

hen buying stamps you should see how many ways you will be able to use them to get the most out of the design. At an average of about 10 for a stamp it can seem expensive to build up a collection, which is why I always try to use the same stamp in different ways that way it will feel like you are getting more for your money!

technique of the month

Mr Grumpy & Friend

The instructions to make this card are on page 40

pop-up cards
Create fun Christmas cards that will literally leap out at you!

hen I think of pop-ups I always reminisce about my childhood and how I loved pop-up books with characters that literally leaped out of the page at me. Transferring this technique to cardmaking and sending cards with that element of surprise when the recipient opens them up is something that I can never tire of. It is a lot simpler than it looks to create pop-ups in cards you dont have to do

anything elaborate or time consuming to make an impact and here I will show you some of the basic cuts you need to make to get you started. For this feature I have used the Christmas Mr Men range for my pop-ups as the characters are such fun and lend themselves so well to this type of technique. You can, however, use pretty much anything you prefer like stamps, stickers, papers, toppers and

dcoupage. A few things to remember though is, rstly, when you make your cuts for the pop-up mechanism to bear in mind what will happen when it closes. You should never cut more than halfway across as it will overlap once closed. You should also remember to make the image that pops up quite sturdy; if you love a design on a paper that is a low weight, mount it onto cardstock rst so that it doesnt op down when

Louisa McLean
the card is opened. As well as the tabs you can create for images to x onto, you can also cut shapes that pop out like the Christmas tree design that I have made here. In fact, there are so many options available to you when designing your pop-ups once you have grasped the basics so play about, have fun and send in some of your creations!

absolutely love Christmas. It is my favourite time of year, and yes, I still believe in Santa! I usually start my Christmas cardmaking in July so that everyone can receive a handmade card. new styles of cards, trying out new folds and new ideas. That little bit of bling and shine is also important to me, so I incorporate lots of shiny gems whenever possible. A little bit of twinkle is always nice and makes your card stand out from the others on a mantelpiece.

ost of the cards we see use a traditional rectangular or square card blank with straight edges and clean lines. However, I thought it would be interesting to create a set of cards incorporating different types of edges and Christmas is the perfect occasion to have fun with a whole range of effective techniques! Paper tearing is so easy to do and requires the minimum of materials and effort, yet the

results really catch the eye. The Seasons Greetings card above is a simple example this card could just as easily have been made with straightedged matts, but the torn effect gives it added interest and makes the penguin and sentiment stand out more! Scalloped edges are still hugely popular with cardmakers and scrapbookers alike, so with this in mind I incorporated a scalloped edge into the Christmas Cheer card design

on page 51, creating a line of baubles on top of a scalloped strip of cardstock. The Hanging Tree card on page 50 incorporates a tree shape cut using deckle-edged scissors, which certainly stands out from the crowd and would look great hanging from a Christmas tree. Just remember to write your greeting on the inside-back of the card so it will be hidden once hung up! Finally, the Christmas Star card on page 51 includes a

punched border and a star topper overlapping the edge. The addition of a computergenerated Christmas font provides the perfect nishing touch! So, why not try something a little different this year and get creative with edges on your Christmas cards? I guarantee youll have fun and come up with some stunning results!

retro christmas

retro mania
Step back in time by combining funky shapes and colours for dramatic retro Christmas cards

Karen Watson

e hear the word retro bandied around all the time nowadays, but what does it actually mean? Well the word derives from the Latin prex retro, which means backwards or in past times, so it actually covers any period in history. If you ask most people what retro means to them, they will probably say that it covers the 1950s, 60s and 70s, but each of these eras differs greatly in style and fashion from the others. In order to create a card that gives an authentic feel for

the period you are trying to recreate, you will need to carefully choose your font and style. For example, the style that was fashionable in the 1950s and 60s was for very straight lines and distinct angles, although very rarely right angles. In the 1970s everything was softer lines were wavier and corners were rounded. Font styles also changed and generally became very rounded and heavier. The retro trend continues to be very popular in the craft market, which means we can easily get hold of

rubberstamps, papers and fonts that make it easy to recreate the period. The internet is full of websites offering a huge variety of fonts that you can buy or download for free. Once you have chosen a font, it is easy to download and will be on your computer for you to use whenever you need it. Colours can play an important part in giving a true feel for a decade, but in my experience it is more important that your images and stamps portray the era rather than the colours. If you use colours that

you dont particularly like, chances are you wont be inspired and consequently wont be happy with your result. For my Christmas cards I have used more modern colours that I like to work with, but I hope youll agree that the fonts and styles of the cards still portray a retro feel. So, whatever the era youre trying to recreate on your card, I hope Ive given a little bit of help, but remember the most important thing of all is to have fun!

Even although I seldom use the muted folk art colours, I think the whole button and patch detail just adds an element of cuteness to the characters I so enjoy creating to share with like-minded crafters. As you can see, these cards have been designed using a combination of blue, lilac, purple and silver cardstock. The thing that sets them apart is the fact that all the embellishments are handmade. Since the emphasis of these cards was based on polymer clay, I wanted to ensure I made things as easy as possible in order that other crafters could get enjoyment from recreating the designs. My aim was to create a rather contemporary look using clean shapes against simple backgrounds and I realised I

Creating your own handmade embellishments from FIMO can be easier than you think

Jacqui Eccleson

needed basic shaped tools to achieve this. I used punches as a time-saving way of forming crisp repeat patterns on card, and to keep things nice and simple for crafters that dont have much experience working with clay I used a small assortment of clay cutters. I wanted to reduce the need for modelling skills. Im hoping to convince all beginners that dabbling with a new crafting material can be fun. Basic rolling, cutting and my own tracing technique will help familiarise you with the product.

Hopefully, youre feeling more comfortable and ready to start! A small amount of modelling is required for the advanced card but nothing too involved. Youll nd a few templates and detailed step-by-step photography to guide you from start to nish. If youre not feeling adventurous try one of the other designs to start with. Youll soon realise that working with clay isnt as scary as you had imagined!

Use wooden shapes as templates to spell out your Christmas greeting to a friend or loved one
love using the Rayher wooden letters and numbers in my cardmaking I nd them so versatile. They can be used, as in this Christmas example, as the key element to the card; as an accent on a card such as an initial letter in a bigger word; as a persons initial on a tag; or to add a number for a birthday or anniversary etc. As the letters and numbers are made from lightweight wood, they can be used as templates as in this example, or I sometimes paint and decorate them and stick them directly onto my cards. There are so many ways to use and decorate the wooden letters and numbers its easy to come up with a whole range of different cards for any occasion.
