REFLECTION BY: NURHASYIMAH BT AWANG

On August 2010, we had received the project coursework under the Planning and Teaching Mathematics (MTE 3107) subject. We must submit this work on early of October 2010. According to the task given, in pairs, we need to complete the on-going exercise and write an essay about 100 to 150 words. The essay was about all the content that include in the MTE 3107 subject. Next, each of us needs to prepare a lesson plan based on mathematics topic. The lesson plan should include the general components and a full description of lesson development. Then, I must use this lesson plan to try out during the school-based experience on 30 August to 3 September 2010. I also print out the materials as my guided to make this lesson plan better. First of all, I search and photocopied the most relevant articles about mathematics lesson plan from the internet and other resources. Then, I prepare a summary for the articles that I had read through thoroughly. Based on the ideas that I gather from the articles, I prepared a complete lesson plan to teach a mathematics topic. I also prepared some of teaching aids to accompany my teaching wherever necessary. When I was at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kempadang, Kuantan, I had met an experienced teacher, Madam Arianti. She was a Mathematics teacher and be as my mentor. I found a lot of information from her. The information was about the lesson plan, skills to attract the students, classroom management and so on. She also gave her time to observe me when I was teaching the mathematics lesson for year four students. The teaching and learning process was recorded by using video. The topic that I chose for my project was about the perimeter of shape and space in year four. Before I write a mathematics daily lesson plan, I search more information about it from the lecturer, a teacher at school and the internet. The lesson plan should

have content, learning activities, objectives, teaching and learning aids and so on. Therefore, I try my best to make it good and to make sure that the students will understand my lesson. My objectives for this lesson plan were to make student able to identify the three of four characteristics of 2-D shapes and they could calculate the perimeter. For the induction set, the learning activity was look, listens and said. I showed a picture like a house and other building to relate the 2-D shapes for the pupils. I instruct them to look, listen and said the shape that include in the picture. However, all of them gave a good co-operation with me and understand the massage from me clearly. The values that include in this activity were discipline and determination among the students. I took about five minutes to do this induction set and it was really good. For the first stage, I explained about the concept of 2-D shapes and gave more examples in the real life. Next, I asked my students to give me other examples of 2-D shapes in their daily life. Luckily, their respond was very effective and innovative. I also use teaching aids while doing this activity. The aids were triangle card, square card and rectangle card. All the cards were made by me and with an attractive colour. The pupils were excited with my presentation. For the second stage, I explain about the characteristics of 2-D shapes. It was about the name, sides, the length and the width of the shape. Then, all of them need to make an activity that the name was, guess the shape and its sides. As I could see, the pupils were very fun and enjoy with this activity. Besides that, I also explain about the perimeter of the 2-D shapes. At the beginner, I showed them the formulae of perimeter by using a power point presentation. Then, I explain the calculation step by step to make all of them understands. I gave extra exercises when they were more advanced with the perimeter. For the third stage, it was the climax stage where I prepared a game for the pupils. The games name was Creative Construction. This game was done in the group and it was a competition. The group that could make a gorgeous construction will win this competition. This game actually improves their skill to cut, to think and to

construct their ideas. They will use their physical strength, cognitive and the social skill to make their ideas become true. For the fourth stage, each pupil will take a short test about the characteristics and the perimeter of triangle, square and rectangle shapes. I gave the simple question for them and the important thing was to make sure that all of them knew what that had learned at that day. I also gave a gift for the ten pupils who were finish the test in the 30 seconds. For the conclusion, I repeat again the lesson that had done as simple as possible. I also gave the homework to my pupils as their revision. Last but not least, I would like to thank to Mr. Johnson Savarimuthu a for his guidance and be patience with us to share and teach about this subject and also all my friends that help me to learned this subject. Thank you.
