CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION 1. Axes Q2 and Q4 are fixed. Q2A = 1 in., AB = 3 in., Q4B = 2 in., and Q2Q4 = 3 in.

. Crank 2 is the driver turning counterclockwise. The proportions are such that, while 2 makes a complete revolution, 4 oscillates through a certain angle. Find the two extreme positions of the center line Q4B of crank 4.

2. Axes Q2 and Q4 are fixed. Q4A = 1 in., Q4B = 2 in., and Q2Q4 = 3 in. AB is of such a length that when the driving crank 2 is 30o above Q2Q4, the driven crank 4 is 60o below Q2Q4 as shown. Find the length of AB and the two extreme position of the center line Q4B of crank 4.

3. Block 4 slides in the slot in the fixed piece 1. Axis Q2 of crank 2 is fixed on 1. Q2A = 1 in., and AB = 4 in. Draw the mechanism, assuming dimensions for 1, if desired, or use center lines only. Draw the four-bar linkage for this mechanism, properly notate the linkage Q2ABQ4, name each link, and show the finite and infinite cranks. Find graphically the two extreme positions of B, the axis of the pin by which link 3 is attached to the block 4. Dimension the length of the stroke of B.

4. Q2 is a fixed axis. 1 is a fixed guide for the sliding block 4. If the stroke of B is 4 in., what is the length of crank AB? Find the length AB if the maximum value of the angle is 30o.

CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION 5. In the slider-crank mechanism shown, the slide B travels along the center line XX. Q2A = 1 in., AB = 6 in. With the crank in the position shown, draw the four-bar linkage, properly notate the linkage Q2AB4, name each link, and show the finite and infinite cranks. Find the two extreme positions of B, the axis of the pin by which link 3 is attached to the block 4. Dimension the length of the stroke of B, that is, the distance between its two extreme positions. Show and dimension the angular movement in degrees of the crank Q2A when the slide B moves between its extreme positions.

6. Use the same dimensions as for Prob. 1-1 but invert the pairs so that Q2 and A are fixed. Indicate the four bars of the mechanisms. Plot the paths of B and Q4 for one kinematic cycle. 7. In Prob. 1-1, locate the midpoint of the connecting rod AB. Plot the path of this point for one complete revolution of crank 2 and find the angular position of the crank 2 when the midpoint of the connecting rod is nearest to the center line Q4B of crank 4. 8. Same as Prob. 1-2, except Q2A = 2 in., Q4B = 2 in., and Q2Q4 = 3 in. 9. In Prob. 1-2, invert the pairs so that Q2 and A are fixed. Q2A = 1 in., Q4B = 2 in., Q2Q4 = 3 in., and AB = 2 in. Designate the four bars of the mechanism and determine the extreme positions of the center line of the two cranks. 10. In the mechanism of Prob. 1-3, it is desired that the extreme right position of B be 6 in. to the right of a vertical line through Q2. It is proposed to make this change by altering the length of crank Q2A, with all other dimensions remaining the same. Find the new length of Q2A and the length of the resulting stroke. 11. Same as Prob. 1-3, except Q2A = 1 in. and AB = 5 in. 12. Same data as Prob. 1-3. Find and show the degrees turned through by crank Q2A for the forward and return strokes B. 13. If the bore and stroke of the triplex pump shown in Fig. 1-25 are 3 in. x 4 in. and the ratio of the length of the connecting rod to the length of the crank is 3.5, draw the linkage for one cylinder with

CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION the crank making an angle of 45o with the vertical center line of the plunger. Dimension all links and show the four bars of the equivalent four-bar mechanism. 14. A 3-in. x 4-in. horizontal pumping engine has a ratio of the length of the connecting rod to the crank of 4. Draw this slider-crank mechanism, designate the four-bar linkage, label the crankpin, wrist pin, and main bearing, and calculate the distance traveled by the crankpin during one forward and return stroke of the piston. 15. Plot the displacement of the midpoint of the connecting rod for the engine in Prob. 1-14 and determine this displacement in inches. - End -
