Evolution of Mobility on Demand

References from Europe and the U.S.

Bike Sharing Systems (another form of MoD) in Europe and in N. America

Proved to be successful in synergizing personal mobility with public transit system

Zipcar, a two-way car sharing system in the USA

Claims to reduce the number of private vehicles by 15 for every shared car Vehicle miles traveled per driver is reduced by almost 50 percent when car owners switch to a car sharing service Vehicle Utilization in 24 hours: private car 5% ; Zipcar 30% Environmental benefit: reduced CO2 emissions by 482,000 tons in 2009 alone.

Implication to MoD one-way car sharing system

Each shared car can potentially replace 20 private vehicles Vehicle Utilization in 24 hours can reach 50-60%

Mobility on Demand (MoD) Electric Vehicle (EV)

What MoD can do to traffic issues?

Mobility-on-Demand: A Shared Car Concept integrating ICT infrastructure and Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs)

System Development by MIT Media Lab in 2003 Feasibility Study in Berlin, San Francisco, Bilbao, Malmo starting 2011 LEV Production by Hiriko (Spain) available in Late 2012 Access the inaccessible areas eliminate the last mile, first mile dilemma Advance ICT (Information and Communication Technology) System facilitates sharing capability of CityCar, thus reducing private car usage/ ownership, and ultimately reduce CO2 emissions and Foldable LEV (CityCar) to save parking space

Features of Mobility-on-Demand:

Benefits of MoD
Environmental Benefits: Emission reduction - utilization of LEVs under a shareduse model

Replace private gasoline powered vehicles - no-tailpipe emissions Energy efficiency benefit - EVs (80%+) vs. ICE (25% or less) powered vehicles. Coupling of the shared-use model - further enhance (perhaps exponentially) the emission reduction benefit

Better Land Utilization

Vehicle's small footprint (3:1 parking benefit) - reduce parking space/costs

More land use for other purposes (such as commercial or residential space) to reduce travel distances and thus enhance emission reductions

MoD in Action:
LEV Design and Concept
LEV Prototype

Road Test
Space saving: a LEV is only 1/2 (operating) and 1/3 (parking) of the space occupied by a normal sedan

MoD in Action:
LEV Road Test (July 2012)

MoD in Action:
Conceptual Application of MoD integrate with Public Transport
Sygnerizing Personal Mobility and Public Transit System: Zero-emission LEV connecting to public transport facilities. MoD can potentially tackles the First mile, Last mile challenge and improve the utilization of public transport system

MoD Development Pathway

Reinventing the Mobility Concept - Visions

Culture Shift: from private ownership to shared ownership Personalized Public Transport Model: ICT integration, personalized mobility experience City Planning: create designated parking; reduce excessive parking Environmental Benefits: zero road side emission (pollutants), low carbon commuting through EV Integration to Power Grid: mobile power storage across districts/ regions

Mobility-on-Demand in a glance
Features:

Benefits:

Car Sharing System to maximize vehicle and space use Reduce car ownership while improve road condition Innovative CityCar design optimized road traffic and parking space

Realization of Zero emission transport system for public use Reduction of air pollutants and noise level on road Flexibility to incorporate with existing public transport network to maximize public transport use

Role of CCA:

Project Experience:

Capability to conduct feasibility study and implementation pathway to suit domestic needs Collaborate with international expert network on actual implementation of the system

Feasibility analysis to adopt the system at district level Development of city-wide project plan on feasibility pathway and implementation direction
