Extended Learning Time

This, 2013-2014 school year, James Monroe High School added an hour and fifteen minutes to the normal schedule. This additional time is called Extended Learning Time and during this period we, the students, expand our general knowledge through various courses or activities. We chose three options and the school tried to accommodate us accordingly. This extra time in school has advantages and some disadvantages as well. However, we have to make clear that this is the vision we, the students of Reading and Writing in Spanish class, have and it is presented below. On one hand, the biggest advantage we see in the extended learning time refers to academics and social. Regarding the academic side, students have more time to expand knowledge and to learn new concepts. In the same manner, we can apply the new knowledge learned during this time to other classes and so we become better prepared for the future. Speaking specifically about the class Reading and Writing in Spanish we have learned and reinforced reading and understanding. This means, we read, analyze and understand what was read. In writing we have learned 282 Hollenbeck Street Rochester, NY 14621 Mailing Address: P.O. Box 26352 Rochester, NY 14626 585-301-4199 ph. 1-888-792-9303 Toll-free 1-888-796-6292 fx. E-mail: info@RochesterLaVoz.com www.rochesterlavoz.com techniques to write better and how we can apply this in other classes and in life in general. One of these activities included the writing of this essay. The whole class participated and gave ideas for the creation and editing. We have also learned how to write resumes for college admissions and to apply for jobs. Now, talking about the social side of the Extended Learning Time, we have to mention that in our class we have people from different countries: Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Colombia. We have had several events where we have shared and learned from the cultures of these countries. This interaction with new classmates and new teachers has helped to expand our social life. On the other hand, we decided to mention the things we see as disadvantages of having a longer day at school. Now that our time at school has been extended we have less free time to rest and to do housework; nor do we have much time at home to complete assignments that we could not finish at school. Similarly, if we mention food, we have to say that many students have

their lunch early or some of them, for whatever reason, do not eat anything during the day. In consequence, when it is time for the 9th period class, many of us do not have the energy to work. In conclusion, extended learning time has positive aspects such as academic improvement; getting to know, enjoy and open our minds to other cultures

and expand our social circle and to have fun. However, if we had a snack this extra time would be much more productive and enjoyable.

There are anywhere between 150,000 to 160,000 residents living in the Rochester area who are considered having Limited English Proficiency or LEP. As a result, Monroe Community College (MCC) has partnered with the New York State chapter of the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) and Raland Transportation LLC to not only bridge the gap between cultures and their languages, but to also provide jobs in a fast growing career field through a 48-hour certificate program centered on medical interpreting training. Olga Chmilar, managing director of Raland Translation LLC, said Raland Translation works with the largest medical providers and private practices of health care in Rochester. As a service provider of translation and interpretation services, Raland provides health care providers with the most highly-qualified medical interpreters, she stated. Raland has employed several students who have completed the medical interpreting training, Chmilar stated. Thats why the medical interpreting training offered through MCC is so important, because the most important thing is that they need to be medicalinterpreting trained so they understand specific codes of ethics, standards of practice and the role boundaries, rather than a bilingual person who comes in trying to help, and does more damage because they dont understand their boundaries as a medical interpreter.

MCC is about making partnerships and opportunities for the students who are looking to round out their resumes and make themselves more marketable, said Charles Caples, program director of Workforce Development at MCC.

2. Est preparado si siente olor a gas natural.

Here are two important safety tips for you to remember:

1. Protect yourself from a silent killer. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is a product of incomplete burning of natural gas, propane, gasoline, coal or wood. It can result from a faulty chimney, ue or vent from a heating appliance or water heater. Have your heating system and chimney, ues and vents checked once a year by a professional. 2. Be prepared if you smell natural gas. If you smell that distinctive odor its like the smell of rotten eggs GET UP, GET OUT and call RG&E immediately from a neighbors phone. Well respond quickly to make sure you and your family are safe. If you are an RG&E natural gas customer and need to report a natural gas emergency or suspect a carbon monoxide problem, call us at 1.800.743.1702.

But voting became optional with the change, and only 5.5 million voted in the runoff - 41 percent. You can say that its the most decisive victory in eight decades, but the most important thing is that Bachelet got fewer votes than her four predecessors, including herself in 2006, Navia said. So the key here is that a majority of Chileans stayed at home, and there isnt really a big confidence vote for the reforms some people want to implement. Many Chileans complain that policies imposed by Gen. Augusto Pinochets 1973-90 dictatorship have kept wealth and power in few hands. Pinochet effectively ended land reform by selling off the nations water, and he preserved the best educations for elites by ending central control and funding of public schools.

LITERARY CAFE

In a second phase, he tries to defend the independence of Ireland although his compatriots voluntarily fought in the British army. Finally, Roger Casements friends turn their backs on him and he is executed by the English for treason, sabotage and espionage. Homosexuality as a taboo: Roger Casement was also publicly shown to be a homosexual by the press and for his habits of pederasty. The veracity of this was questioned by the members of the Literary Caf, since some people considered that the diary they used was perhaps used to defame him, and it could have been used to discredit him among his followers. Other people considered his sexual inclinations to be irrelevant. Nevertheless, we found it to be undeniable that society allowed itself to be influenced by this type of social prejudice, even when it was about someone who had shown himself to be on the side of justice. The courage to be: Roger Casement is described as being a hero who dared to live assuming his perspective on life even with social discrepancies.

There are two types of diabetes, type one and type two. Type one diabetes, known as juvenile diabetes, occurs in children and young people. The pancreas is an organ that produces a hormone known as insuline. When a person eats, food is digested and converted into sugars or glucose that go to the blood. Insuline is in charge of moving that sugar or glucose to the bodys cells in the form of energy. When the body does not produce insuline, a person must inject insuline into his or her body. Type two diabetes is the kind that usually occurs in people over forty years old, although in recent years we are seeing higher numbers of this type in younger people due to a lack of exercise and more people being overweight. In type two diabetes, the pancreas produces insuline, but not enough, or the body does not allow the insuline to work well. Some people have to inject themselves with insuline; others have to take pills to help stimulate the creation of insuline by the pancreas, making the sugar from foods enter the bloodstream more slowly, or making the body more sensitive to insuline. Some people can also control their diabetes with diet and exercise. It is important to recognize what are some of the warning signs of diabetes. If you or someone you know exhibits some of the following symptoms, it could be a sign of diabetes: Doctors recommend that the level should be less than 7%, as it reduces the risks of complications from diabetes. The sugar or glucose level in the blood should be between 70 and 130 mg/dl before eating and approximately 180 mg/dl two hours after eating. Remember, if diabetes is not controlled, serious Health problems can occur, such as: Heart attack Harm to eyes Kidney problems Harm to legs and feet Infections Nerve damage If you are diagnosed with diabetes, it is important to follow a plan that includes: Being tired all the time Being hungry all day long Rapid weight gain or loss Being very thirsty A frequent need to urinate Numbing, cramps or a tingly feeling in the feet and/or hands According to the American Diabetes Vaginal infections or sexual problems Association, some of the risk factors associated with type- two diabetes are: It is important to have a Physical or medical check-up each year.
