A Message from the Dean

Seasons greetings to our MLC families, I am happy to report that I am back in the building after welcoming a second son to the Gish family. As we approach the end of 2013, we are given the opportunity to reflect on this past year and set goals or resolutions for the new year to come. With that, I encourage our families to do this collectively as we know it is often easier to attain our goals with the support and assistance of our family and friends. When we return from our winter recess, Im looking forward to asking our students what challenges they have personally set for themselves; perhaps it is to improve their grades, become more active, both physically and/or socially, or to be more open-minded, which is one of our IB learner profile traits. When we return to school in 2014, I anticipate the return of our students adhering to our norms, which have seemed to fall short as we grew closer to the winter break. I expect students to follow the guidelines set forth in our dress code policy, arrive to classes on time, participate and engage in classroom discussions, and push themselves in the areas of both academics and social growth. I wish you all a wonderful holiday season, as well as health and happiness in the new year!

Library News
SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES IN THE LIBRARY!

As a society, literacy is a major concern for our youth. In addition, students are required to complete service learning hours each year. If any students are interested in literacy as their focus, I have several ideas for projects that could be used for service learning and would also benefit the library. I am looking for students who would be willing to do book review (hand-written or digital), promotions of specific books (posters, book covers, or even 3-D sculptures) and book trailers (using PowerPoint and/or video). I hope that this will promote literacy in our school, because the best people to get students reading are their friends!

Sports Update
The MLC Middle School Dragons defeated MPTPA at home by a score of 53-18. Here are the highlights: -Similar to last Friday's game, the Dragons' offense ran through stud point guard and co-captain, Ryan BettisAllen. Scoring 8 points of his own, Ryan seemingly had eyes in the back of his head as he racked up a majority of the team's assists, while also providing smothering defense at the other end of the court. Game officials checked his glasses to make sure they weren't some sort of gadget designed by Batman. -Co-captain Bryan Scheibelein added 2 points on offense, but his most significant contribution came off the court. While sitting on the bench, Bryan offered helpful advice to his teammates as they came off the floor. Look out Coach K. Bryan's leadership may one day translate into a coaching career! -Emerging superstar, Malachy Campbell, worked in the paint the way artists might work in oils or clay. Pouring in 10 points of his own; the low post game is becoming his true calling. -Shooting guard, Tylor Mitchell, had his big boy pants on today scoring a majority of his 10 points on follow-up shots or layups. Tyler showed Yoda-like patience under the rim and played smart basketball the entire game. -Playing multiple positions, Kevin Durant....I mean....Maurice Lee hit the first three pointer of the season for the Dragons. The shot brought the MLC crowd to its feet, and many of the JV Dragons in attendance asked for autographs after the game. -Finally, 6th grader, Jhailan Wilson, scored his first points of the season, hitting a layup in the fourth quarter. Jhailan's confidence and determination seemingly doubles every game he plays. The Dragons' next game will be played against Rawson at 4:30 Wednesday, December 18th at MLC. Come out and support our middle school diaper dandies!

IB Learner Profile Trait of the Month of December

Principled
They act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them. Over the course of the month, MLC will be highlighting this area of the learner profile. Please take some time with your student to review this trait and the positive influence it can bring to your everyday life. Here at MLC, we will be celebrating those students who exhibit caring behaviors. Your child could be one of our students of the month!
