Methodology
Clinical Professionals 2014 UK and
European pharmaceutical salary
surveys were conducted online
with professionals from within
the pharmaceutical industry. The
respondents included professionals
both registered and not registered
with the Clinical Professionals Group.
Respondents to the salary survey were
invited to complete the salary survey
through a link distributed through a
number of mailshots to our database
of active candidates, in addition
to social media networks and our
websites.
To ensure that there was no
duplication of responses, cookies
were used, and duplicate responses
were removed when identical contact
details were seen.
The questions within all the surveys
were worded to ask open questions
which were unbiased to create an
accurate portrayal of the salaries
within the pharmaceutical industry
across Europe.

The average salary by experience in industry graph shows a steady salary increase in the clinical research industry,
with employees gradually gaining higher salaries as their experience level increases. Although the salary level for 10+
years may seem relatively low, in comparison to other sector, this is likely to be due to some employees within clinical
research staying in lower seniority roles, rather than moving to a more senior job role as they gain more experience.
Benefits at a Glance
Within the clinical research sector, most of the
respondents received a bonus, private healthcare, or
a pension as part of their salary. Although these were
also the most common benefits last year, last years

The table above shows that salaries are generally static for job roles within
regulatory affairs, with pay increases correlating to job title seniority,
as opposed to experience in industry. It is worth noting that regulatory
consultants tend to be employed on contracts and therefore salary is inflated
for the tables values.

The results from the Only Medics survey demonstrated that as salaries increased, employees were more
likely to believe that their salary accurately reflected their level of experience (not shown here). The salary
banding switch point SBSP for the Only Medics sectors was significantly higher than the other sectors,
with the SBSP for physicians being the top salary banding of 81k. Of course this is reflected in the
overall higher salary of the function, and therefore is actually a comparatively lower step to reach than that
of other functional areas surveyed.

What is a Functional
Service Provider
or FSP?
Traditionally, functions such as monitoring would
be retained in house with permanent sta within
a bio-pharmaceutical organisation. Alternatively,
an organisation may choose to outsource entire
clinical studies (full service CRO).
The FSP model allows separation of core/non-core
capabilities within your company allowing you to
choose providers specialising in a discipline e.g.
Clinical Monitoring, Biostatistics, Orphan Drug or
Oncology.
Clinical Professionals FSP model additionally
allows you to retain functional control, have
confidence in staff retention, lower cost and allow
greater flexibility.
This removes the burden of employment
and often reduces day-to-day management
requirements but has the benefits of strategic
control and direct integration within functions of
your business.
