The Passing of Time
(Bible Chronology – A Survey of Time and Events in the Biblical Record of our Past)

Introductory Preface
There is great uncertainty among Bible scholars as to the dates in this period. The dates we have given
here are those found in the margin of many Bibles. They were calculated by Archbishop Ussher, of Armagh,
in AD 1650-1654, and first put into Bibles in 1701. While they are based on the statements of Scripture they
are not a part of the inspired word. James Ussher (1581-1656) was an Irish biblical scholar, who established
a long-accepted chronology for the Old Testament. Of Ussher’s numerous writings the most important is
the Annals of the World (2 vol., 1650-54; trans. 1658). In that work he established his biblical chronology,
with the creation fixed at 4004 BC, a date widely accepted and included in the page margins of many
editions of the Authorized, or King James Version. As a rule the dates given in the margin of our Bibles are
based on his chronology.
The date of creation is stated to be 4004 BC. This date is in great controversy and the debate boils down
to the “Old Universe” or the “Young Universe.” There are those who believe that the Earth is in excess of
three and one half million years old. If this is the case it could be proven. The difference between 3.5 million
and 6,000 years is dramatic and; indeed, makes a great contrast. Before the Moon landing and the first
human walk on the Moon, it was estimated that the Moon would be covered with stellar dust that had
accumulated over 3.5 million years . NASA built the Lunar-Lander with steps to allow the astronaut to step
down onto the surface of the Moon with about 3 feet of this dust. These steps did not go all the way down
to the Moon’s surface and the un-expecting astronaut had to leap down. They found only 3/4 of an inch of
dust on the surface. Using the math that NASA used to estimate three feet of dust would have been
accumulated in 3.5 million years we can gather that the Moon is less than 10,000 years old and most likely
only 6,000 years old as the Bible would teach and Ussher told us in the mid-seventh century.
A simple summary of the years would show the fact of the “Young Earth.” From the creation of man till
the flood (Gen. 1-7) [Everything dates from the creation of Adam. Beyond him all is wrapped in dark and
impenetrable mystery. In order to determine the Length of time from Adam’s creation to the flood we have
only to add the ages of the antediluvian patriarchs--Adam, Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch,
Methuselah, Lamech, Noah – at the births of their first sons, and add to this the age of Shem at the flood,
and we find that it was 1656 years (Gen. 5:3-32; Gen. 7:6).] – 1656. Add to this the number of years from
the deluge till the gracious call of Abram (Gen. 9-12) [We have already seen that it was 1656 years from
the creation of Adam to the flood. Now in order to find how long it was from the flood To the death of Terah,
we must add to the two years from the flood to The birth of Arphaxad, the ages of the patriarchs – Arphaxad,
Salah, Eber, Peleg, Reu, Serug, Nahor – at the births of their first sons and To this the years that Terah
lived, and we have four hundred, twenty-seven years (Gen. 11:10-32).] – 427. Then from the call of Abram
till the law – 430. Then the years from the exodus and the law till the foundation of Solomon’s temple – 479.
The years from the founding of the temple till the destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar – 426. And
lastly th years from Jerusalem’s destruction ‘till Christ’s coming – 586. The total comes to the sum which
is established by Ussher – 4004.

A Copyright for this material is claimed (©2007) to protect the work and
arrangement of this data from some who might squander it and discourage
more from being produced. All rights are reserved for the reproduction of

reproduction of this document is allowed under the “fair-use” doctrine of the copyright laws of the USA for
academic archival purposes.
The Fresh Waters Digital Library is dedicated to the goal of placing these Bible study volumes and many
classic documents into the hands of the most humble readers. Technology has become advanced enough to
allow the easy and economical publication of this work in the form of an “E-Book.” This is a new method
of distribution but a CD-ROM can be made that contains the complete series of books that make up this
major project.
What Is an E-book?
E-Books, or electronic books are exactly the same as a traditional book, except there is no paper, thus
saving production costs and offering wide distribution over the World Wide Web. The production cost
savings are passed on to the customer, meaning that the price of an e-book is very low as compared to a
traditional printed book and can be distributed on a Web Site. All the books distributed through FWDL are
in the Public Domain, used by the permission of the copyright holder or written by Dr. Terry W. Preslar (The
editor) and all texts are to be used without change or alteration in exchange for this special liberty.
How Do I Read an E-Book?
E-Books can be read on your computer or laptop and several types of electronic organizers. To read our
books, you simply use the web browser in your PC, Laptop or Mac by using the windows help file reader
that comes with windows, the freeware “Adobe Acrobat Reader” or in the case of “HTML” files (The
Internet’s native format) your Browser can read many of them. You do not have to be on-line to read your
E-Books. This (HTML) is the universal format supported by all web browsers. If you have an organizer or
reader with the Windows Mobil operating system, you can load HTML formatted books for reading. You
can use a laptop or notebook computer, then you can curl up on your favorite chair or relax in bed, whilst
studying and reading your favorite Christian Classic. Alternatively, you can print out the book for reading
on paper. We supply a few titles in “HTML” and most of these Special Edition books are in Adobe Acrobat
Format (PDF). These files are Adobe Acrobat (.PDF) files and can be viewed with the free Acrobat Reader
t h at can b e downl oaded from that web site, installed and used freely.
