– A Concise Glossary Of Christian Terms –
“Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost
teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” (1 Cor. 2:13)
“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing
the word of truth.” (2 Tim.2:15)

Did you ever wonder what all those Christian terms mean? The new convert or the seasoned Christian
may not understand all the terms and specific words used from the pulpit and the Bible study platform. Well,
I’ve put together a list of words most commonly used that few really understand the full meanings of. This
is a helpful tool for understanding exactly what some of those “terms” mean.

–A–
Abomination of Desolation – When the Antichrist sits down in the rebuilt Jewish Temple and declares
himself to be God, the great tribulation of 42 months will then begin. At the occurrence of this event,
the Jews living in Israel are commanded to flee into the wilderness. All tribulation saints will know, from
that day on, they must now wait 1260 days before the Lord returns. (Dan 9:27 with Mat 24:15-19).

Adonai – the name for God meaning “my Lord” or “my Master.” (Gen. 15:2).

Adoption – The act of God whereby He places His own child in the position of an adult son. (Rom. 8:15,
23; Gal. 4:5; Eph. 4:12).

Advent – The coming, as in Christ’s. The “first advent” is recorded in the New Testament, and the “second
advent” or “second coming” is a way of referring to Christ’s promised return. (John 14:3; Luke 12:45;
2 Peter 3:3-4; 1 Thes. 3:13; James 5:7).

Amen! – An exclamation that means “even so, let it be.” (A form of assent or agreement). (Deut. 27:15;
Neh. 5:13; 2 Cor. 1:20; Rev. 1:18; 22:20).

Amillennialism – (prefix "a," "no"). The belief that there is no literal 1000-year reign of Christ. Thus
Revelation 20 is taken symbolically, not literally, by adherents of this view. Amillennialists generally
believe that Israel has been permanently set aside for all time and that God's current plan of salvation
involves only the Church.

Angel – A created being who is God’s messenger and minister to mankind. (Matt. 25:41; 1 Tim. 5:21; Rev.
1:1).

Angel of the Lord, The – A pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. (Gen. 16:1-13;
21:17-19; 22:11-16; 31:11-13; Ex. 3:2-4; John 2:1; 6:12-16; 13:3-22).

Angelology – The doctrine of angels. (Ezek. 6:2).

Anthropology – The doctrine of man. (Psa. 8:4).

Antichrist, The – An individual who will rise to prominence after the rapture, deceive the nation of Israel,
and bring tremendous persecution upon God’s people. (Compare 2 Tim. 3:13; Matt. 24:24; 1 Thes. 2:1-
12; Rev. 13). Often described as the most evil man that will ever live. He will arrive on the world scene
and appear to be the world's savior, but everyone on earth will soon learn his real mission will be one

-1-
of destruction. Also called the man of lawlessness (or sin), Gog, the son of destruction (or perdition).
(1 John 2:18; Rev 13:1-8).

Apocrypha – a group of books written during the intertestamental time and rejected as canonical. (Psa.
12:6-7).

Apostasy, The – In the end times, the Bible predicts a great falling away or departure from the faith.
Because we have experienced a number of generations where people have rebelled against God, the one
that occurs leading up to the tribulation will likely surpass prior apostasies. The Greek word apostasy
was originally used to describe a revolt staged by a military commander. (2 Thes. 2:3; Matt. 24:11-13).

Armageddon – Armageddon comes from the Hebrew word meaning "the Mount of Megiddo." This ancient
fortress is located in northern Israel, across the Plain of Esdraelon from Nazareth. Armageddon will be
the gathering place for the final great battle, which bears its name. (Rev 16:16).

Ascension – The return of Jesus Christ to heaven forty days after His resurrection. (John 6:62; Acts 1:9;
2:33-34).

again... of the Spirit”. (John 3:3-7; 1 Peter 1:23; Gal. 4:29).

–C–
Canon – The reed or measuring rod or rule. (John 16:7-15).

Canonicity – A book’s right to be included in the Biblical Canon because God has determined it so. (Psa.
119:89).

Chastisement – God in love directing the Christian back to the center of God’s will for his life. (Deut. 8:5;
Job 33:19; Psa. 94:12; 119:89; Prov. 3:11,12; Jer. 10:24; John 15:2; 1 Cor. 11:32; Heb. 12:5-11; Rev.
3:19).

Christology – The doctrine of Christ. (John 21:25).

Church Age, The – The “Church Age” began on the day of Pentecost and will end at with rapture of the
church before the beginning of the tribulation. Many Bible teachers (dispensationalists) believe the
Church is the reason why there is a gap between Daniel's 69th and 70th week. (Dan. 9:24-27).

Christ – Means “anointed one” in Greek. The synonymous word in Hebrew is “Messiah”. This is a title of
Jesus, meaning the promised Righteous King and Son of God, who gains His throne by offering Himself
up as a sacrifice to pay for the sins of His bride, the church. (Luke 4:18-19; Isa. 11:2; Matt. 3:16-17; Col.
1:15-19; 2:9).

Christology – The doctrine of Christ. (John 21:25).

material that is already in existence. (Acts 6:3; 2 Cor. 5:17; 1 Tim. 3:8).

Demon – The Greek word daimon is translated “devil” in the N.T. These creatures are also referred to as
“evil spirits.” Demons are thought to be angels which followed Satan in his rebellion (Matt. 9:34; 12:24;

taking of the mark of the beast. (Rev. 19:20; 20:10).

Flesh, The – Generally refers to the sinful, “carnal nature” of man that the Gospel teaches us to “crucify
daily”. There are “sins of the flesh” but also “works of the flesh” which are an attempt to be good by
mere human effort rather than the resurrection power of Christ. The Flesh is the opposite source of
motive and energy to the Spirit. (Jer. 17:5; John 6:63; Rom. 8:5-10).

Fruit – What “Christ in Us” produces; character qualities such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,

those who wanted to be part of the Kingdom of God. (1 Cor. 15:1-4; 1:18-23; 2:2; 2 Tim. 2:8; Luke
9:23).

-4-
it. (Rom. 3:24-31; 5:15, 17). Specifically, what we get by grace is “Christ in Us” through faith in the
gospel. It is by grace we are saved, not of works, lest any man should boast in anything other than Christ.
(Acts 17:25; 1 Tim. 1:9; Rom. 5:1-2; Eph. 2:4-10).

Great White Throne, The – The final judgment of the lost to determine their degree of punishment in the

which is short for “Yahweh” (mis-transliterated as “Jehovah” in some translations) which is the personal
name of God given to Moses at the burning bush, meaning: “I AM”. An English equivalent would be
“Praise to Yahweh!” or “Praise to I AM!” (Ex. 3:14-15; Psa. 9:1; 98:4; Rev. 19:1-6).

Heart, The – In every language and culture, including the Bible, the heart means the emotions; the feelings.
Some suggest that the heart includes the mind and/or the will, but if this were true than scriptures like
Mark 12:30 would be redundant. (Jer. 17:9; Luke 10:17; Ezek. 36:26; Isa. 60:5; Heb. 10:22).

Heaven – The eternal abode of the saved. (Heb. 12:1-2).

(Rom. 6:19-22; 1 Cor. 1:30-31; 2 Cor. 7:1; Eph. 4:24; Heb. 12:14b).

Holy Spirit, The – The third person of the Trinity. The Spirit of God convicts us of sin, teaches us about
Christ, and empowers us to know and follow Him. (Luke 11:13; John 14:16-17, 26; Eph. 3:16-1).

Hosanna! – An exclamation that means “Save us”, often coupled with: “Save us in the highest way”. There
is an ongoing sense to Hosanna/Hoshiana as in: “keep on saving us”, or “save us now!” (Make 11:9-10;
Psa. 118:25-26).

Humiliation – Those self humbling desires that caused Jesus Christ to leave the glories of heaven, live on
this sin-cursed earth, and die on an old rugged cross. (Phil. 2:5-8; Heb. 12:2).

Infinity – The attribute of God meaning that He is not limited by space. (Deut. 33:27; Rom. 1:20; Tim.
1:17).

1:11; 2 Peter 1:20-21; 3:2).

–J–
Jacob's Trouble – Called by Jeremiah as "the time of Jacob's trouble" and by Daniel as "the time of distress
such as never occurred," this event will take place during the 3 1/2 year reign of antichrist. The time of
Jacob's trouble will be a time of great suffering on earth. The suffering will be brought on by the actions
of the Antichrist and by the wrath of God being poured out on a sinful world. (Jer 30:7).

Jesus – In Hebrew, His name is the word for “Salvation”. Jesus is the perfect expression of the Father, the
fullness of God manifested bodily, our Savior, and Lord. Jesus heals and saves, putting us at peace with
God the Father and sharing His glory and power with us. (Prov. 30:4; Col. 1:12-20; 2:9; Jer. 17:14).

Judgment, The Great White Throne – This judgment is predominately for the unsaved. It is also believed

Judgment seat of Christ is for believers only. (2 Cor. 5:10), (Rom. 14:10-12), (Rev. 11:15-18).

Justice – The attribute of God whereby He carries out the laws He has implemented. (Isa. 28:17; John 3:19;
Rom. 1:18).

Justification – To be “put right with” God. the judicial act of God whereby He declares the guilty sinner
to be righteous and free from guilt and punishment. (Rom. 5:1-2; 5:9-11). When our rebellion towards
God is ended by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, who pays for our sins and establishes peace with the Father.

torment. (Matt. 25:41; Rev 20:10, 15).

-6-
Law, The – The old covenant. The “Torah” in Hebrew. The straight edge of the Law shows us how crooked
we are, and illustrates our need for supernatural life through Christ Jesus. Termed the “ministry of
condemnation” in the New Testament, and spoken of in two ways: the moral Law and the ceremonial
Law. (Rom. 3:19-20; 7:7-13; 10:3-4; Gal. 2:16; Acts 13:38-39; 2 Cor. 3:9-11; Heb. 7:18-19).

ultimate welfare of others. (Prov. 10:12; 1 Cor. 13:1; Gal. 5:13; Phil. 1:9; 1 Thes. 4:9; 1 Peter 4:8; 1 John

in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark,
or the name of the beast, or the number of his name." The Mark of the Beast will likely be a microchip
implant that operates like an ATM or credit card. Remember, everyone who receives the Mark of the
Beast will be cast into hell, so don't take the mark! (Rev 13:16-18).

Mercy – God’s compassion for the sinner ln not giving him what he deserves. (Heb. 4:12; 8:12; James 5:11;

Prophecy – Saying what God wants said. Forth-telling the word of the Lord. Prophecy speaks to the past
concerning sin, and to the future based on whether we repent or not now. True prophecy is convicting,
and easy to despise in the flesh. (2 Sam. 12:7; 1 Peter 1:21; 1 Thes. 5:20-21; 1 Cor. 14:1).

Punishment – God in wrath,(righteous indignation giving the sinner what he deserves . (Psa. 9:17; 16:10).

–R–
Rapture, The – A shorthand term for denoting what the scripture describes as being caught up together with
Him in the air” – Christ’s coming in the air for His Saints. At an unknown hour and day the Lord Jesus
will descend from heaven, while remaining in the air, he will snatch his Bride, the Church, out from
among this sinful world. Christ then takes the Church to heaven for the 7 year wedding feast. The earthly
reason for the removal of the Church is to make way for the rise of Antichrist and to fulfill Daniel's final
70th week. (See Dan. 9:24-27). There is much argument as to when this will happen, before, during, or
after the “tribulation”. (Matt. 24:30-31; 25:13; 1 Cor 15:51-58; 1 Thes 4:16-18; 2 Thes. 1:7-10).

Repentance – A thorough change in the thinking process regarding sin: it is a turning from sin to God.
(Mark 1:15; Luke 13:1-5; 5:32). Taking in God’s point of view. Staring at His word, glory, and way.
Both a starting point of the Christian life as well as an ongoing practice. (John 6:29; 2 Tim. 2:19; Eph.
5:8-17; Acts 2:38; 17:30).

Resurrection, The First – The resurrection of the saved. (“And many of them that sleep in the dust of the
earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” Dan. 12:2;
John 5:28-29).

Resurrection, The Second – The resurrection of the lost. (“And many of them that sleep in the dust of the
earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” Dan. 12:2;
Rev. 20:4-6).

Revelation – God’s self-disclosure about Himself and us; knowledge from above. Without revelation, all
we would have is human opinions about God. But God has revealed Himself to us by His own initiative
and love. God’s ultimate revelation is Jesus Christ. (John 1:1-3; 3:27 Matt. 17:5-7; Col. 1:9; 2:2; Eph.
1:17-18).

Revelation, General – God’s revelation of Himself in creation, through history, and in a man’s conscience.
(Dan. 4:17).

Revelation, Special – God’s revelation of Himself through His Word and in His Son Jesus Christ. (1 Cor.
2:14; Rom. 10:17; 10:13-15).

-8-
Righteousness – One of the “Communicable” attributes of God by which He always does that which is
right. (Phil. 1:3-11; James 1:20). Perfection. Success from God’s point of view. The absence of sin and
the presence of Christ’s goodness. (Rom. 1:17; 3:21-22; 8:10; Phil. 3:7-9).

–S–
Salvation – Jesus’ name is “Salvation” in Hebrew. Salvation is not merely a thing or event, but a person.
Salvation is not so much an “it” or a “what”, but a “whom”. If we have Jesus, we have Salvation. We
are saved from God’s wrath if and when Jesus is “in us”, and we are “in Him”. (Matt. 1:21; Ex. 15:2;
Isa. 12:2; Acts 4:12; Rev. 12:10).

Sanctification – The process of being purified, cleaned up, and set apart. A work of the Holy Spirit in us
through trials, ongoing self-denial, and the gifts and fruit of the Spirit. (John 17:17-19; Acts 26:18; Rom.
6:19-22; 1 Thes. 4:3; 5:23-24).

Second Coming, The – Christ’s coming to the earth with His saints to begin His millennial rule. (Matt. 24-
25; Acts 1:11; 1 Thes. 4:13-18). This is the time when Jesus Christ will return, defeat the Antichrist, and
set up his 1000 year kingdom on earth. The second coming is not the rapture. The rapture takes place
approximately 7 years prior to the second coming. Another important difference between the two is that
the rapture will occur at an unknown time (Matt. 25:13) while the second coming will take place 42
months after the Antichrist declares himself to be God. (Rev. 13:5)

Seveneth Week, The – The final seven years of Gentile domination of the nation of Israel and the city of
Jerusalem; the last week of the seventy weeks of years (490 years) of Daniel's prophecy which will begin
after the long interval. (Dan. 9:24-27).

Sin – The transgression of the law is sin, originally, the First human sin which is passed on through Adam
to all succeeding generations. (Deut. 6:24; Rom. 3:9-23). Sin is found to be both Omission and
Commission – doing what God says is forbidden; or not doing what God says we should do. Whatever
is not of faith; not of Christ’s life in us, is sin. It is what we are born into. (Rom. 5:12; 3:9; 3:23; 14:23c;
Gal. 3:22; James 4:17).

“spirit” – In the human sense, that portion of the Holy Spirit that we have been given when we are “born
again”. Those who are not born of the Spirit are “dead” in this sense, although they have bodies and
souls. The Children of God have been “made alive” in the Spirit by new-birth. (Matt. 12:18; Rom.
8:10-13; 1 Cor. 15:45; Gal. 5:25).

Soteriology – The doctrine of salvation. (Heb. 7:25; 9:12).

Soul, The – The eternal part of us. Closely associated with our wills and basic instincts. Who we are as
individuals. (Heb. 4:12; Matt. 16:26; Deut. 4:29; Job 33:38; Psa. 35:9; 63:1; 116:7-8).

Sovereignty – God’s right to do what He wants with what is His. (Psa. 24:1; Isa. 53:4; Rom. 8:28; 2 Cor.
5:19).

–T–
Theology – The doctrine of God. (Hosea 6:3).

Theos – The Greek New Testament name for God. (John 20:28).

-9-
Tribulation – The seven-year period of turmoil on earth between the rapture and the second coming of
Christ. The first 3 1/2 years will be relatively peaceful as the antichrist rises to power. The second 3 1/2
years will bring the greatest suffering in human history as the wrath of God and the Antichrist is poured
out on earth. (Dan. 9:24-27; Matt. 24-25; Rev. 4-19).

Trinity, The – A doctrinal term depicting what is taught in scripture, one God in three Persons, that is, that
God is three in one, the “Tri-Unity”: Jehovah, the Eternal Father, Jesus the Eternal Son, and the Holy
Spirit. A fundamental, foundational starting point in the knowledge of God. (Matt. 3:16-17; 28:19; John
14:16-17; 15:26; 2 Cor. 13:14; 2 Thes. 1:8).

Truth – The attribute of God whereby He cannot lie nor tolerate untruth in others. (Zac. 8:16; 1 Tim. 4:3).

–U–
Unity – The Divine nature is indivisible; there is but one infinite and perfect Spirit. (Acts 2:1, 43; 4:32;
Rom. 12:5; 1 Cor. 12:13).

–V–
Verbal – The sword indicating that every word of the Bible is inspired. (2 Sam. 23:2; Psa. 12:6-7; 1 Cor.
2:13).

Version – A translation of a book of the Bible or a translation of the entire Bible. (Psa. 119:140, 165;
138:2).

–W–
Witnessing – Telling others of what God has done in delivering us from our sins, and of how He has poured
His Spirit upon us. Not a pre-fab sales pitch. Often involves a dying-to-self in transparency, a confession
of past sins so that others will have hope that they can be saved and experience the righteousness, peace
and joy they see in us. (Psa. 40:1-10; John 3:11; Prov. 12:17; 2 Cor. 12:9-10; 2 Peter 2:12).

Worship – The appropriate response to God saving us. God is not interested in play-acting, but wants to
actually heal and save people that will then worship Him in Spirit and in truth. People love to praise
things that are great; thus in praising God we find our ultimate purpose and pleasure. (Psa. 145:3; 84:2;
63:1; 42:1; John 4:23-24; Phil. 3:3).

–Y–
Yahweh, (Jehovah) – The name for GOD meaning “the Self-Existent One.” (Ex. 3:14).

-10-
“Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of
God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (1 Thes. 5:17-18)

traditional printed book and can be distributed on a Web Site. All the books distributed through FWDL are
in the Public Domain, used by the permission of the copyright holder or written by Dr. Terry W. Preslar (The
