PROPOSAL Seminar

Museum Bank Indonesia Desember 16, 2009

I. BACKGROUND
Indonesia has very rich and diverse culture, with 700 ethnic groups, each with its language, local wisdom and tradition. The Indonesian archipelago has more than 17,000 islands with their flora and fauna and natural resources. The heritage of Indonesia is the legacy of nature, culture and saujana , the weave of the two. Natural heritage is the construct of nature. Manmade (cultural) heritage is the legacy of thought, emotion, intentions, and works that spring from over 500 ethnic groups in Tanah Air Indonesia, singularly, and together as one nation, and form the interactions with other cultures throughout its length of history. Cultural heritage includes both tangible and intangible legacies. Saujana (cultural landscape) heritage is the inextricable unity between nature and man-made heritage in space and time. Heritage, bequeathed from the generations that precede us, is the a vital foundation and initial capital for the development of the Indonesian nation in the future, and for these reasons, must be conserved and passed along to the next generation in good condition, without loss of value, and if possible with an enhanced value, to form heritage for the future. A lot of the invaluable heritage are lost, damaged, or endangered, due to ignorance, incapacity, or mismanagement. We have to take up an active role to work together with various relevant institutions to strengthen the heritage conservation system, and assist the safeguard and maintenance of the heritage. Nowadays, it is crucial to formulate heritage conservation program in a proper management, which integrate heritage components in Indonesia national development. Not merely decision makers and various advocacy programs but also the importance of the community involvement.
