How to be a Yoga Teacher

BY H O M E S T U DY. A S I M P L E G U I D E . . .
BY JAHNE HOPE-WILLIAMS

From the Directors Desk

Dear Friends, This is my 50th year of yoga teaching. It has been an inspiration, a joy and a pleasure, and the years have passed very quickly. When I started I had no plan, and had it not been for the vision of my teacher Margrit Segesman I would have not been inspired to go forward into teaching. Today, I am preparing myself for the next 30 years on the job (at least) still healthy, happy and exible. If BKS Iyengar can do it, then so can I - and so can you. ! ! I am always being asked for an Easy Introduction into yoga teacher training I am not sure there is an easy way, however, our Teacher Training program can morph around your life, you can mould it to suit you, rather than the other way around. And, it can be done completely remotely, to suit you. Including the nance we nance it for you. Time payment available. ! ! Our home study course is a reection of my personal, tested, true life experience, incorporating everything I have learned, and think is necessary to enable you to teach yoga to the best of your ability. When I launched my course all those years ago, people said teaching yoga by distance education was not possible. It clearly is as our wonderful graduates all over the world are please to attest to. The curriculum is comprehensive, and includes asanas, meditation, law, anatomy and physiology, sutras, yamas, kriyas, doshas, koshas, subtle anatomy etc. Everything you will need to be the yoga teacher you want to be. The best you can be. ! !
i

! ! In teaching yoga teachers by home study and in class since the 1970s, I am more convinced than ever, that PASSION for yoga and for people are the most important components, and will take you down the path I have trodden. Being able to do fabulous poses (whilst looking in a mirror), are just that fabulous poses and nothing more. ! ! This program will change your life. It is not an empty boast. We have trained hundreds of yoga teachers, and I am sure we can teach you. To get the most out of this program, I recommend that you commit to it fully. Just do it, and when you look back you will see the changes, small at the beginning, getting bigger and more visible as you progress. Welcome to my world. I look forward to hearing from you, and meeting you in class sometime. ! ! Namaste:

Jahne !

CHAPTER 1

What is The Australasian Yoga Institutes home study Yoga System?

Once you have Trained, Graduated and Registered with The Australasian Yoga Institute (Yoga First) you do not need any other Accreditation. The Australasian Yoga Institute serves exactly the same purpose, and is set up in the same way as Yoga Australia. We are both Voluntary Agencies, and both can Register and Accredit Yoga Teachers at the same level and status. ! ! Our Home Study Yoga System is a powerful, comprehensive 12 to 18 month course, although it can take as long as you need it to take depending on personal circumstances, and depending on how fast you would like to progress. It is designed to teach the skills for success as a yoga teacher and assist you in the business of yoga, reecting in success in your personal life. We assure you optimal personal growth and condence along the way. ! ! Unlike most Yoga Teacher training, it concentrates not only on the how to skills, rather it seeks to create a want to motivational environment in which there is a strong emphasis on the ability to think independently and learn from your prior experience. The course has been offered as a Home Study program since 1976. We are pioneers, and our teaching experience is hard to beat. We believe that we were one of the rst yoga schools in the country to offer a home study option, and we believe we are still the most comprehensive and of course, THE BEST! ! ! In the Australasian Yoga Institutes philosophy, personal life and yoga life are bound together. Life without professional success often leaves people wanting more, and material success without success in a persons personal life rarely results
6

in a feeling of overall success and satisfaction. Our course develops skills for successful yoga teaching, designed to break down the barriers that frequently exists between business and personal life. Making your work (your passion) your life is what this course can offer you. ! ! The Australasian Yoga Institutes Home Study Yoga Course is unique in that it focuses on how you can perform in yoga and in life to produce extraordinary results. Through this course your yoga becomes a vehicle for self expression, fulllment and most importantly of all - joy! ! ! Anna, graduate. Everything about the course was fantastic. You supported me when I needed it, and gently pushed me when I needed pushing (and in the beginning there were many times).... I cant believe that my life has become so rewarding, My horizons have broadened immensely, and I have been consistently teaching from the almost the beginning of the course

! ! !

CHAPTER 2

How is The Home Study course taught?

The Style of teaching at The Australasian Yoga Institute is quite different to most other yoga teacher training available today. The Key Differences are: We have many different ways of constructing the course around your life and lifestyle - you do not have to bend your life to suit us. The instructors have earned the right to teach through direct practical experience in all aspects of yoga - no uffy or untested ideas. Our Director has been teaching for fty years, and we believe in that time we have discarded the dross. The style of instruction is comprehensive. Your instructors are committed to the involvement and success of 100% of the participants, 100% of the time. We support a philosophy that encourages learning by discovery. Because this is a distance learning course, the learning is personal and relevant to what each person needs. The opportunities to learn are more focused. The course sets out clear principles and avoids jargon. Sanskrit terms are acknowledged but not mandatory. The practical yoga asanas can be learned via the videos, with ones teacher, or physical assessments can be fast-tracked by optioning to come to Melbourne and booking a one-on -one consultation with the Director of Studies, Jahne HopeWilliams. There is a charge for this, but it will be a fast track process - so there is a considerable saving. We recommend you subscribe to our Teacher Training videos. Membership and viewing counts towards your graduation scores. You really can do the whole course from home.

Home Study makes the learning highly memorable because it is such a personal experience. Self designed, self paced, and self motivated learning. !

CHAPTER 3

The Benefits
The program is designed to have participants complete the year with the ability to lead a class, recognize what works and what doesnt work, and to be aware of how when and where to correct. They will also understand Yoga and related modalities from the Western, Indian and Oriental points of view. ! ! The course asks that the participants see themselves as teachers from day one, and complete the course from a teachers, not a students point of view. ! Some of the benets of this style of learning are: Can be done in a time frame of 12 to 18 months depending on your program, and not on the school. The course is entirely self-paced, so ts well with family responsibilities. Our students create a meaningful way of life for themselves and for others. On graduation the students knows the importance of a vocabulary of asanas and how to apply and develop programs suited to individual teaching styles. Our Graduates have the ability to build, maintain and inspire students. They have a sound knowledge of the body and its systems plus a broad philosophical perspective. Again we emphasis that our learning system is adaptive not controlling. We t around your life. In the many years we have been teaching, we have adapted and morphed our system around an unimaginable collection of different needs, and we can adapt to you. !
10

CHAPTER 4

History
The Australasian Yoga Institute, teaching this course under the name YOGA FIRST, originally grew out of a yoga teaching program and was introduced in the winter of 1976, in Mt. Macedon, Victoria, by its Founder and current Director Jahne Hope Williams.! ! It began as a studio based program, but due to the miles between yoga students and the school, a Home Study based system was conceived to overcome the tyranny of distance. The Director of Studies embarked upon an annual one month international teaching/learning tour to enable the course to be continuously improved to match the best the world had to offer. This is a continuing process, in close association with its insurance company of choice, enabling its many students to easily acquire Professional Indemnity Insurance on graduation. It also enables the qualication to be nessed into an International qualication through overseas Yoga Associations. ! ! By the late eighties the course had been honed down and rened into a very powerful mix of data and experiential learning that has been successfully applied by its many graduates. We have recently expanded the program to a standard 18 months, although it can be done in 12months or less. This means that the time to pay expands beyond the time of the course. We are in fact nancing the course for our students in-house, and in this respect it is like a HEX program. We can organize a time-payment program to suit you. ! !

11

CHAPTER 5

Who Should Apply?

Contrary to many yoga schools and Colleges, we do not require many years of formal study as a prerequisite to applying to become a Trainee Yoga Teacher. Neither do we require years of yoga asana practice or knowledge. We anticipate that an applicant will have one year of yoga practice how else would you know you want to teach? However, we have accepted students into the course who have no real experience but have demonstrated a passion for yoga and for people. ! ! We offer a practical and comprehensive yoga teacher training program, with many opportunities for personal growth along the way. No previous levels of tness or exibility are required. We do presume you will have had a reasonable amount of yoga training, whether that has been acquired alone (this particularly applies to students in remote parts of Australia), or via a studio and regular classes. ! ! We believe that if you dont have a passion, you will not be able to pass along your knowledge effectively, no matter where, when or how you trained. A yoga teacher with no passion is like a Doctor with no bedside manner. Technically good, but no good with people. ! ! Some of our students come from the tness industry, but that is no guarantee of success. Some of our students have only been studying yoga for only a few years before they apply. If they are passionate about the yoga this is no bar to them. Other people have been teaching, or learning for most of their lives, and only now have come to think about formalising their training. In most cases they look like they have been born to teach yoga and no matter which end they come from,
12

make wonderful teachers on completion of their course. Time-wise, the course is built around you, you do not have to conform to the course. There are no time constraints and although we do say it is a 12 to 18 month course, you can get through the course faster, or you can string it out to match in with your family commitments. ! ! However, if you do take longer than 18 months to complete the course, and are Student Teaching, then you will be required to Register with us at Yoga Teacher Trainee Level 2 for which there is a fee of $85 which will increase by $20 for each year you delay graduation. This is to encourage you maybe even remind you, to complete the course. Some students are happy to remain that, but we want you all to get out there and teach. That is what you signed up for. The world needs you! !

13

CHAPTER 6

About The Business of Yoga

All of our courses are designed to produce major opportunities for change none more so than the Yoga Teachers course. This includes considering personal effectiveness, designing your own studio, and putting together business plans and advertising techniques. Yes, you will be a yoga teacher, and in that role will be running a business to a greater or lesser degree. Therefore, it is best to understand the rules of business, and the requirements of the State. ! ! The results from graduates of our courses show extraordinary results of high value and lasting effectiveness. Participants learn skills that promote excellence in both their personal and professional lives. ! ! Our module The Business of Yoga was included in our basic program when it was acknowledged that although our graduating students had a comprehensive grasp of the principles and practice of yoga teaching, they needed specic and wide ranging instruction relating to running a yoga business efciently and effectively. ! ! A business plan has to be the starting point in your new yoga business, and it is in this part of the course too. Nothing is left undone. !

14

CHAPTER 7
