South of Scotland

The South of Scotland offers visitors a little of everything; from designer label sheep in Argyll, literary genius in Wigtown and football, hospitality, whiskey and amazing landscape everywhere you look. It reprezents 35% of the total area of the country and It has over 3 million inhabbitants. Here are placed 2 of the most important cities in Scotland: Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Glasgow
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and third most populated in the United Kingdom. The city is situated on the River Clyde in the country's west central lowlands. Glasgow is also ranked as the 57th most liveable city in the world. The entire region surrounding the conurbation covers approximately 2.3 million people, 41% of Scotland's population. The city has many amenities for a wide range of cultural activities, from curling to opera and ballet and from football to art appreciation; Many of the city's cultural sites were celebrated in 1990 when Glasgow was designated European City of Culture.

The city's principal library, the Mitchell Library, has grown into one of the largest public reference libraries in Europe, currently housing some 1.3 million books, an extensive collection of newspapers and thousands of photographs and maps.

Most of Scotland's national arts organisations are based in Glasgow, including Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet, The National Theatre of Scotland, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Scottish Youth Theatre.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland, the second largest city in Scotland and the seventh-most populated in the United Kingdom. Located in the south-east of Scotland, Edinburgh lies on the east coast of the Central Belt, along the Firth of Forth, near the North Sea. Owing to its spectacular, rugged setting and vast collection of Medieval and Georgian architecture, including numerous stone tenements, it was considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

The city is well-known for the annual Edinburgh Festival, a collection of official and independent festivals held annually over about four weeks from early August. The number of visitors attracted to Edinburgh for the Festival is roughly equal to the settled population of the city. Edinburgh attracts 1 million overseas visitors a year, making it the second most visited tourist destination in the United Kingdom, after London.

Edinburgh Financial DistrictTourism is an important economic mainstay in the city. As a World Heritage Site, tourists come to visit such historical sites as Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Georgian New Town. This is augmented in August of each year with the presence of the Edinburgh Festivals, which bring in over 4.4 million visitors, and generate in excess of 100m for the Edinburgh economy.

It is traditional custom that no undergarments are worn underneath the kilt, and it is military regulation for soliders in Highland regiments.

Robert Burns (25 January 1759 21 July 1796) was a Scottish poet and a lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a "light" Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these his political or civil commentary is often at its most blunt. Auld Lang Syne Edinburgh Hogmanay

About kilts: Not everyone wears kilts and plays the bagpipes. They are only worn at weddings. They arent always worn without underwear. People who do that though, are said to be True Scotsmen (Children must wear underwear under the kilt for certain reasons... ) Although great Scottish heroes like William Wallace and Robert the Burce are portrayed in movies wearing kilts, there is no evidence that they ever wore kilts in their lives. In movies, William Wallace is said to have fought the English because they had murdered his wife Murron. Theres no evidence that a Murron ever existed though.

Glasgow is a dangerous place at night. Gang fights are always taking place there. These gangs consist of several teens or 20-25-yr old men that are in some sort of war. They keep fighting to show the others whos the most powerful.
