Grammar/Lx Focus: pragmatics & phonology

Learning Aims: Main aim By the end of the lesson, students will be able to start and end a phone conversation. They will be leave a message and ask to speak to someone. Subsidiary aim: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use requests in phone conversation context.

Anticipated problems: Students might need to copy the teachers intonation at first.

Materials:

Stage aim 1) Lesson Objectives 1) Warm Up

Stage/Procedure The teacher will introduce the lesson objectives to the students. The teacher will warm the students up by discussing some questions in pairs then the teacher will check with them. The teacher will share some of the answers with them. Students will work in groups of 2 to fill in the gaps with the suitable words. The main purpose behind this activity is to activate the student about the topic. The teacher will check with the students when they finish.

3) Phone conversation Students will work in groups of 2 to match the sentences with the reasons we use (pragmatics) them for. The main purpose behind this activity is to get them familiar with phone call conversations. The teacher will check with the students when they finish. The teacher will work on some pronunciation if needed as well as give some examples. 4) Intonation The teacher will remind students with intonation and practice saying some (phonology sentences with them. Then students will practice saying the sentences paying attention to the correct intonation. At the end, the teacher will give students feedback. 5) Pre-task The students will discuss some questions in pairs then the teacher will check Phone conversation with them. The teacher will share some of the answers with them. structure/requests (pragmatics) Students will work in groups of 2 to fill in the gaps with the suitable headings 6) Phone giving reasons for the sentences. The main purpose behind this activity is to let conversations the students aware of the phone conversations structure as well as different ways structure/requests to hold phone conversations. The teacher will check with the students when they (pragmatics) finish. 7) Intonation Students will practice saying the sentences paying attention to the correct (phonology) intonation. At the end, the teacher will give students feedback. 8) Break Students will have a coffee break.

Students will listen to a phone conversation and answer some questions about it. Teacher will check with the students at the end. Students will practice the phone conversation paying attention to the correct intonation. At the end, the teacher will give students feedback. Students will work in groups of two to write a short phone conversation. Then they will report to the class. The teacher will give help and support if needed. The teacher will ask students to give some example of things they have learnt today.

J. Work in pairs to write a phone conversation between A and B. A is calling a friend at work and B is the receptionist at the friends office. Use sentenc es from exercises B and F.
