Personal Leadership Platform: William P. Schindel Jr. Head Wrestling Coach at University of Mount Union

Personal Leadership Platform The University of Mount Union is located in Alliance Ohio. The student population is 2,096 undergraduate students, the wrestling team has 40 student athletes. The University has a population of 50% men; 50% women, wrestling team 100% Male. Mount Union is representation from 30 states and 16 countries, while the wrestling team is represented by 5 States. The school is made up of 13% American students of color, the wrestling team 17.64%. The wrestling team is broken up with 17 freshman, 10 sophomores, 8 juniors, and 5 seniors. With having a wide variety of student athletes on the wrestling team we make sure to keep everyone involved by email. We will send out monthly emails about how the team is doing. We will also hold different event to keep everyone involved, one thing we do is have a team cookout/tailgate before a home football game. This helps parents and athletes get to know

everyone. It is hard for some parents to stay involved throughout the season with work schedules and being out of state. Having the cookout helps them feel involved and get to know the team before the season starts. For anything to be learned it must be taught. I believe that of all the careers in this world not one would be possible without teachers. Teachers are very important in our society because they provide our youth with the knowledge and social experiences needed to improve their future. As a teacher, I hope to be able influence the lives of my students and help them understand what education can do for them and their future. A teacher does more than educate students on academic principles but instills life virtues. A teacher/coach is a mentor with the power to impact and change the lives of students every day. We leave ourselves open to show love and understanding to all students whether they need it or just need someone to be there to talk to. As educators, we have a commitment and responsibility to equip and enable students to be a success a story. We give them the ability to

Personal Leadership Platform discern responsibility and to take control the actions they choose. The reward, in itself, greatly surpasses all negative and strenuous aspects. Todays children are tomorrows future and a good teacher is a part of the base that supports that future. In todays fast paced society, children must be taught to keep up with this constant race successfully. Being a good teacher/coach means making a difference in childrens lives. In todays high tech lifestyle it is sometimes difficult to keep kids attention in the classroom/athletic field. Learning needs to be fun and hands on as much as possible in order to keep the children interested and eager to learn. If students are taught in a way that they will

remember, then in the future they will be able to put this knowledge to use in different situations. I want to go into education with an open mind. Education is the foundation of opportunity, and I want to give young people all the opportunities Ive had. Every person who has ever been in school knows that there are teachers we will remember and teachers we will forget. We think of all the effective teachers weve had over the years with a sense of recognition, but the ones that have touched our humanity we remember with a deep sense of gratitude. We will remember some teachers because of what they taught us, some we will remember because of why they taught us. Students in my class may not leave with a complete grasp and understanding on muscles or bones, but they will gain a little bit more knowledge about life. I have learned a saying called RISE, relevance, interesting, satisfied learners, and expectations for success. I want to imply this philosophy into my classroom/wrestling room every day. I feel that it is very important to make sure that my students see the relevance in what I am teaching them. I want them to be able to make healthy life decisions later in their lives. Along with making sure my students see the importance of my class I want them to be excited

Personal Leadership Platform

and interested in my class. I want my students to know that my class has a purpose, I want them to leave everyday know that they have accomplished becoming a healthier person every day. Lastly, I want all my students to set high goals for themselves and the class. I hope I can make my students eager to learn, participate and make healthy life goals. I want my classroom/wrestling room to be very organized. I want my rules, procedures, and consequences to be very clear to the students. I want them to know what they are and why I made them. I believe that organization is a key factor in a teachers success. I also want my classroom to be neat in appearance. More often than not students just find gym to be play time however I want students to get a true feeling that they learned something every day. I hope that I can have as big on an influence on my future students as my high school religion teacher had on my classmates and me. Mr. Burtscher was an older man who taught religion at Hoban High School. Every day he would start class off with a prayer, and then we would go into so whats. So whats were things that have either happened in the world community or to someone personally in the last twenty four hours. Somehow he would always find a way to lead the discussion into a lesson from the book. I can remember every day of my senior year I was excited for 6th period because he made his class so fun yet still had control of the class and made sure every day every one left with a valuable lesson. He made learning fun, and exciting. I hope that I can take what he should me and imply it to my classroom and to my students. I plan on being able to take my experience from school and sports, and using them to connect with my students. I trust I will be able to take a group of students with all different backgrounds and experience, and motivate them to have a fun healthy lifestyle. My goal for a physical educator is not to make sure that every student is athletic and can play every sport.

Personal Leadership Platform However, I will teach all the basics of each sport, I want my students to understand the concept

of health and life styles. I want to be able to make a difference with all my students, I know that not every student loves physical education as I do and everyone has difference interest. I just want every student to walk out of every class knowing a little more about themselves and being able to live and choice healthily. The goal I have selected is winning OACs. Every year the main goal around campus for every athletic team is to win an OAC title, this is why I have selected it. The main challenge we face as we try and win an OAC title, is that most of the teams in the Ohio Athletic Conference try and win an OAC title as well. As we go forward to continue to win OAC titles the main strategies we input is creating a practice room that is just like a live match. Just as a football team prepares it teams for game type situations or in game strategies. A few of these drills are as followed Easy - When your opponent is there so you can get perfect technique and perfect body placement. Being able to hit shots and feeling the weight of your opponent as you move. Purpose: No reaction from your opponent in this drill, its all about sharpening your skills so that in live situations you know where you should be. Easy with finish: this is the same as "easy" except you finish all the way through to the mat with every shot. Not just getting to where you need to be, but getting where you need to go. Seeing other opportunities once you are on the mat. Taking a shot, feeling your opponent, finishing the move, and looking for better opportunities to score from that. Purpose: Capitalizing on every shot we take, seeing better point scoring opportunities, always looking for the next move. Easy in Hard out: this is when we take a shot, get into the leg, and our opponent starts to react as if it were live situation. Ex: you shoot a high crotch, get in on the leg, opponent hips down and starts wrestling. This is not live, it is 50/50, opponent only giving you normal reaction time. Purpose: Being able to feel and understand how we need to finish once we get in on a leg, knowing how our opponent will react. Being able to finish even on shots that aren't clean.

Personal Leadership Platform Hard in Easy out: this is when we hand fight to get into a leg, still at 50/50 speed. Once we get in on a leg, the opponent will let up and let us finish the move. Understanding what it take to get past an opponents defense to a leg. Purpose: Being able to hand fight, not get frustrated, and get past an opponents initial defense to look for more scoring opportunities. Hard in Hard out: combination of the previous methods, opponent is at 50%, giving us only reaction time. Giving us the ability to hit our shots and finish on our scoring ability, yet

seeing how and opponent will react. Hand fight and use set ups until we can get to a leg, once we get in we have to fight to finish with the reaction of the opponent until we get a takedown. Purpose: Being able to hit our shots and still see what the opponent is looking for and see the process of a takedown, from setup to finish. Play Wrestling: When you are at 80% and the opponent is at 50%. This is when we get to see not so normal situations, scrambles. Being able to move our body and get into scoring situations. Purpose: Improving our scrambling ability, seeing how to score in not so perfect situations, learning how to capitalize in a scramble, attacking from every angle. Being able to think one move ahead of the opponent. Active Drilling: This is similar to play wrestling, but where you are at 100% and opponent is at 80%. Helps us get into situations, see what we need to do, and capitalize on scoring. Still be focused on perfect technique, but your opponent will be going harder, translating into live situations. Purpose: Creating an environment where you are still the scorer but seeing what it take to capitalize on every scoring opportunity. Helping you get perfect technique in live situations. Chain wrestling: This is when we connect one move with a series of moves and keep going always looking for the next opportunity to score always trying to be one step ahead of your

Personal Leadership Platform opponent. An example of this is when we hit a single leg finish and as we are going to the mat

10

instead of settling for the 2 point takedown we look for an opportunity to put are opponent on his back. Purpose: We do this to learn to be one step ahead of our opponents always looking ahead trying to use every opportunity to score Shark bait drill: This is when we have 3 or 4 guys in a drill 1 guy is in the whole time. While this guy is in everyone else is watching and making sure they don't run into other groups and protecting every also being ready to jump in once the other person is done. The person in will either be taking shot or defending shot or a shot reshot or a shot defend reshot drill. Purpose: we do this to get a lot of shots in and different looks in so that we can drill harder get the most out of are drills also get a good cardio while not making it a live situation so that the person can work on what they need to work on with a good workout helping them translate this better into live situations Positional: This is when we are in a situation and practice the finish. An example of this would be when we are in on a single leg and we need to proactive the finishes so we see all the ways to finish and get the takedown. Purpose: This is so we can see when we are in a different possessions to score us take full advantage of it and capitalize. Situational: This is very similar to positional however it is when we are in a match and you are down with 30 seconds left to go and need to get a takedown or when you have the lead with a min left to go with a stalling call and need to get the win. Purpose: This is so we can learn to understand mat situations so we have been in a situation before so when it happens we can now know what to do when that situation comes in a live match and also so we are more relaxed and know we have been there before and can do it again.

Personal Leadership Platform Reflecting on how we present all of this to the group I believe we do a good job in our

11

first week of practice making sure everyone is on the same page. Our first step with this process is having a team meeting with a PowerPoint going over each step. We have a wide variety of tops from how to represent yourself as a Mount Union Wrestler to how practice will be conducted. The next step in the process is what we call Hell Week this is where the team goes through 3 a days. We have a morning workout at 6am for conditioning, a wrestling practice at 4pm for our technique, and a lifting practice at 8pm. After these first two step we will reflect after every match or tournament we have. Going back over what see the group needs to improve on and what each individual needs to improve on. We will hold individual video sessions for each guy on the team, going over what they did wrong and right in every match they wrestled. I have seen huge changes in our guys attitudes on and off the mat. I know that this process is working and everyone has bought into working towards winning an OAC and National Title.
