Integral Human Development: A Framework for Social Change

Prepared for CCUSA Parish Social Ministry December 2013 Kim Lamberty, DMin

Human Dignity
God created humankind in his imagemale and female he created them God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good
Genesis 1:27, 31 (NRSV)

Solidarity Partnerships
Solidarity with a sister parish is our opportunity to live out our Catholic identity through accompanying our brothers and sisters in relationship and service. Accompaniment is mutual.

Key Principles
Relationship: Emphasize relationship over resources. Subsidiarity: Support responsible local leadership. Sustainability: Supporting programs that result in lasting change.

IHD: A Goal and a Process

To promote the good of every person and the whole person

Goal of Human Development

When we fight poverty and oppose the unfair conditions of the present, we are not just promoting human wellbeing; we are also furthering man's spiritual and moral development, and hence we are benefiting the whole human race. For peace is not simply the absence of warfare, based on a precarious balance of power; it is fashioned by efforts directed day after day toward the establishment of the ordered universe willed by God, with a more perfect form of justice among men.
Paul VI: Populorum Progressio 76

What is Integral Human Development?

A process that enables individuals and communities to protect & expand the choices they have to improve their lives, meet their basic human needs, free themselves from oppression and realize their full human potential.
The objective is to build capacity to support sustainable development so that communities can improve their situation and their environments.

Understand Partner Communities

What community development plans already exist? What are the priorities of different groups in the community? For Example: Institutions (The Church, schools, local government) Men vs. Women, Young vs. Old Socioeconomic groups What are the root causes behind their concerns What is their long-term vision?

Focus on Assets, Not Problems

What is an asset? Something tangible or intangible that you own, have a claim to, or have steady access to.
The more assets you have, the wealthier you are
-- and - A greater diversity of assets reduces vulnerability to shocks.

Resilience and Coping

Resilience is the capacity to cope with shocks: the more assets you have, the more resilient you are, and the faster you can recover. Coping strategies: - reversible (+)eat less, eat something else, the strong members go hungry, temporary migration, etc. - irreversible (-) use up assets (sell animals and jewelry), move family elsewhere, sell children, let the weakest die, etc.

Building Resilience
Where we want to intervene is at the level of building resilience. This is where poverty is addressed and prevented. Most interventions take place at the level of coping strategies, thus instituting a cycle of dependency.

Build on Community Assets

Starting with community priorities for change, what are the project opportunities? What assets are required for project success? Where can these assets be accessed? What assets does the community group possess and how can they best utilize them? What other community groups exists and what can they share with us? What outside help is required and what does it consist of?

Subsidiarity
Work to develop capacity of communitybased groups to and leaders to lead projects and ensure longterm solutions.

Sustainability
Supporting programs that result in lasting social change. Questions to Ask: 1. Impact will continue if external funds stop? 2. Tackles root causes of poverty? 3. Communities are empowered to take the lead? 4. Reduces dependency on external support?

Exit Strategies
How will impact continue after our support? What inputs will still be necessary after program end? Where can these assets be found locally? What can we do now to establish linkages or build these local assets? Will there be a time to exit? How will we know its time?

Implementation
Medical Missions Water Projects Education Food Programs

Examples of Methods
Emphasize community participation in decision making from the beginning of the relationship Consider a small, simple income-generating activity at the community or institutionallevel to build financial sustainability Develop plans to gradually transfer management and technical capacity to local teams

Support Fair Trade

Through fair trade, we can use our economic power to uphold the dignity of small producers and contribute to reducing poverty.
