Discussion over the Strathmore Hospital and the need for expansion has been an ongoing one, spanning over many years. On Nov. 21 that discussion was once again brought to the Legislature during question period by Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale. Councillor Bob Sobol and Mayor Michael Ell had both seen the broadcast of the questions and responses and both had concerns with the responses by Minister of Infrastructure Wayne Drysdale. The Strathmore Hospital was constructed in 1985 and since that time has not been modied or expanded, even though it has the second busiest emergency room in Alberta, seeing 31,000 to 33,000 patients each year. The Alberta Health Services (AHS) capital plan states that many of these facilities are functionally and physically obsolete, creating increased health and safety issues. Hale wanted to know when this would be xed. Well Mr. Speaker here we go again asking for more, they want new hospitals, they want new schools, they want to cut the budget they just keep asking for things Mr. Speaker 1985 isnt that old of a building, there are lots of hospitals and schools way older than that, said Drysdale. And Health Services, whether they believe it or not Mr. Speaker, they dont seem to believe anything we say, but Alberta Health Services is given a budget to maintain the facilities and they are given plenty of money a year from infrastructure and it is up to Alberta Health to maintain their hospitals. Hale continued on with his next question: Given that the population of Strathmore has grown three to four times since it (the hospital) was built in 1985 and given that in 2006 the health region study recommended signicant expansion to the emergency room, acute care, laboratory and diagnostic imaging and given that since this report the hospital has not received any new capital funding to expand, when is the Minister going to address this critical need? Minster of Health Fred Horne responded saying that AHS is very aware of the growth in Strathmore and in fact Strathmore has become a regional centre for health care that is serving a large number of residents who are in the southern part of Calgary. Mr. Speaker there has been great progress in preparing for the expansion for Strathmore for the future from a brand new continuing care facility recently opened on land adjacent to the hospital. Thirty residents who lived in the hospital in long term care are moving to that brand new facility making room for expansion, said Horne. Continued on Page 2

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The Christmas season can be a tough time of year for many. Trying to nd a way to afford to buy presents for your loved ones while still affording groceries and gas can be depressing. Getting a helping hand can be a blessing beyond words, and being the person lending the hand also gives a special feeling. James Demshakwa, originally from Nigeria, recently watched the assassination of JFK on TV. When Kennedy said the famous words ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country, it got him thinking about what could he do. He had watched the news during the ood and found it amazing how Canadians were responding to help those affected, and then with hurricane Haiyan in the Philippines he said he saw the same generosity again I just was moved by the way Canadians have responded. Christmas is coming so I just thought of a little surprise, said Demshakwa. On Nov. 26 he went to the Hi-Ho gas bar, and to the Crystal Ridge Esso, he gave each location $250 and a stack of letters. The money was to pay for the gas of people who paid $50 or less for their gas. The letter was to explain why. On Nov. 27 he went to the Co-op gas bar, again with a stack of letters and $250 to be given out. I realized no matter how well to do you are when you own a car going to the gas station, nobody really wants to go because the money never seems to be enough, said Demshakwa. Maybe somebody is coming to the gas station with just $20 and thats all they have and they are wondering how they will get on, so let me just do that as a surprise for them.

Noelle Gregor was one of the recipients of the free gas. She felt the need to sit and take the time to tell Demshakwa that his help in his little way was actually huge for her. Something that so many would see as a small gesture has allowed me to get to work this morning and bring me home to my family. I am a proud woman and most would think by my appearance that I am comfortable in my life. I woke up this morning with $10 to my name not knowing how I would get to work tomorrow you have taken that stress from my day, said Gregor in an email to Demshakwa. I can not thank you enough, I was in tears as the relief washed over me and I thanked you and the universe for the gift. I am forever grateful for the person that you are. You have made a huge difference to many people. Sometimes we are blessed to have such beautiful, special people touch our lives. What I love about this, people, like me who struggle everyday and are too proud are reached. I cried damn right I did it reminded me that I am not alone that there are good people who want to touch your life if for no other reason than to appreciate humanity. Demshakwa said in Africa he found a lot of people expect that there should be a handout from the developed countries. They dont understand that the giving countries like Canada, its not out of so much that they have because some people they have a little bit, but they want to share, said Demshakwa. In one sense I wanted to understand the story of the people that give, its not as if they have everything in the world, they have made up their mind to give. And then in one sense too to make those who give, like Canadians, feel how it is to receive.

James Demshakwa spread the gift of giving late in November when he gave $250 to each Hi-Ho, Crystal Ridge Esso and the Co-op Gas Bar. The money paid the gas for many surprised Strathmore residents.

Shannon LeClair Photo

Robyn Kloosterhof also emailed Demshakwa to tell him how his gift has affected her. I was blown away and touched today by your kindness. I got gas at the Esso gas station today when the two cashiers gave me the surprising news about my gas being paid for. I am blessed to not have been in the position of others who suffered in the ood and hurricane.... but I think I know the warmth they feel when someone reaches out to help them. Thank you for giving me an experience I will never forget and helping me to understand what others have felt like when I have contributed. Demshakwa is hoping word of his gift will inspire others to give in their own way. We have so much to be thankful for and so much that we can share. We live in a society now that theres so much evil and I feel that yes theres evil on one side but if were very creative and have good intentions we can overcome evil by what we do, said Demshakwa.

Hale ghts for Strathmore Hospital

Continued from Page 1
Hales nal question was given that Strathmore is number two on the Calgary zone priority list, he wanted to know how a hospital of this size is an AHS priority but is nowhere to be found on the governments capital plan. Drysdale was once again aloof and almost dismissive in his response. He stated that they work closely with AHS on their priorities, but Strathmore is number two in this area, not number one, and there is a whole big province with lots of demands with high growing areas, and he guarantees some growing just as fast if not faster. Drysdale said they are trying to build Alberta as fast as they can but he feels Wildrose is saying one minute that the government is building to fast, and then not enough. Its hard to understand what theyre asking for, said Drysdale. It was the whole tone that really concerned me. I felt as a person from Strathmore I was actually embarrassed and disappointed in Mr. Drysdales comments, said Sobol. He took it upon himself as a citizen to write a letter to the premier outlining his regret in how the hospital and Strathmores situation, which has been ongoing for years, is being looked upon by a minster in the premiers cabinet. I felt that Minister Drysdale was not taking our concerns in regards to our hospital seriously. I was very disappointed to see a Minister talk about our hospital in that fashion and kudos to our MLA Jason Hale for attempting to have some action taken to improvements in our hospital, said Ell. Administration was directed to write a letter speaking about how they feel about Minister Drysdales comments.

Students raise over $90K

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter For the past few years schools in Strathmore have been participating in a Sobeys Gift Card fundraiser. Families can sign up for a predetermined amount of groceries a month, paying the school directly for the cards and then Sobeys gives the schools a 10 per cent discount. Groceries are something that every single household needs to buy, therefore making the fundraiser an easy success. On Nov. 28 Wheatland Elementary School held their monthly assembly where they announced whether or not they, as a school, had made the goal of raising $7,500. We were able to exceed this goal by raising just over $9,000.This money will go towards a variety of extracurricular activities and equipment at the school (eld trips, musical instruments, technology, gym equipment, reading incentives), said Michelle Rushford, associate principal at Wheatland Elementary school. Brady Johansen and Spencer Johansen were the top sellers in division one, tying at $5,800 raised each for a total of $11,600. Emma Van Bussel brought in $2,150 and was the division two top seller. By reaching, and exceeding their goal, the entire school body will now get to take part in a Minion Movie Day on Jan. 24. All of the students will dress up like minions from Despicable Me. Staff will also dress up and everyone will watch Despicable Me 2 together.

Promoting active and healthy living

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter One of the easiest ways to live a healthy and active lifestyle is walking. Its free and all you need is a decent pair of shoes. In Strathmore, inclement weather doesnt hinder walking, since there is indoor walking available at the Civic Centre for anyone interested. The HEAL coalition (Healthy Eating, Active Living) is to thank for that and many of the active events that happen in the community. Our whole goal is to create a community environment that is healthy and will support active living. One of our main goals has been walkability and encouraging people to walk within our community, whether thats to get from place to place, or for recreation or athletic purposes, we want people to be moving more, said Lisa Sader a coalition member. The Town of Strathmore has always provided a space for indoor walking, but HEAL coalition members started to think of ways they could entice more people to take part in it. We felt that it would be nicer if there was music on and if there was someone there. You go into the Civic Centre and it can just look like a big empty room but having a friendly face there saying are you here for indoor walking and talking with them about walking and using a pedometer and tracking their steps has really encouraged other people to do a bit more, said Sader. The coalition was rst formed in May of 2007. They developed a vision, mission and goals. They next mapped out community assets and needs before beginning to implement action plans. When we rst started up back in 2007 we did a survey, we did a kick-off event and invited people to come to the Civic Centre. They had an opportunity to ll out the survey of what they would like to see and what are the barriers to healthy eating, active living, said coalition member Robert Breitwieser. Out of that what showed up most which was affordability and accessibility, so we said whats affordable and whats accessible? Walking came up so we said lets make that our primary goal in terms of activities. We felt this is something that almost anybody can do, you can do it as family or you can do it as an individual. Breitwieser said over the years HEAL has learned some things about the community, where improvements are needed and other changes that need to occur. The coalition has worked and talked with the town and developers to connect walking paths and create more paths in the community. HEAL is best known for the Great Skate held at Kinsmen Park every year on Family Day, which sees people skating on the pond, going for wagon rides and enjoying hot chocolate. The coalition has also held successful Winter Walk Days, Walking Challenges and much more. Another project brought by HEAL was when they partnered with the Primary Care Network to provide discounted pedometers to residents. They can still be purchased at the Bank Athletic Club. By going to the http:// healourfuture.com website you can track your steps. Thats a whole other piece that encourages people to be more active because if you start looking at where you are and setting a goal to do more then odds are that you will improve upon your walking distance, said Sader. We encourage people to get out there and make sure their sidewalk is clear so that people can walk because that has posed a challenge for many people. The HEAL coalition is hoping to add members to its ranks. They are looking to bring in new and fresh ideas that will help get people out of their homes and active. Joining the coalition is a great way to meet other people that are likeminded. Meetings are usually the rst Monday of the month. One of the things that has been a constraint is nances, we really have no money to work with, or very little money to work with but we have developed partnerships with the Lions Club, the Kinsmen Club, the Town of Strathmore, Primary Care Network and Tri-Smore, said Breitwieser. We have tried to link up all of activities with them and bring them in whenever possible and that has been really helpful and meaningful. Despite nancial constraints and only being a ve-person group, Strathmores HEAL coalition has proven that they are doing something great. The coalition was awarded the Community ChooseWell Award for Southern Alberta in 2011 and 2012. On Nov. 21 ChooseWell once again recognized the coalition when they were awarded the Creating Healthy Opportunities award. To join HEAL or nd out more info contact Lisa Sader at healourfuture@yahoo.ca or by phone at 403901-8047.

Merry Christmas from the Town

The Town of Strathmore held its annual Christmas open house on Dec. 6. Residents were invited to come down and snack on some of the homemade goods while visiting with council. Mayor Michael Ell (r) and Robert Breitwieser.

Capsule Comments
We celebrate many birthdays in December. One that gets overlooked is Louis Pasteur, born on December 27 1822. He was a French bacteriologist who created a process for sterilizing milk to kill pathogens that could cause disease. He also developed a preventive inoculation against rabies. This early work on immunization has saved millions of lives throughout the generations. The human liver is a wonderful organ. It is the only organ that has acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, the enzyme that breaks down alcohol. It does this job well at the rate of one standard drink per hour. Just a reminder, a standard drink is 12 oz of beer, 5 oz of wine or 1.5 oz of spirits. Had your flu shot yet? Its not too late. Have your children inoculated too. Remember, you cant catch the flu from the flu shot. The more people who get the flu shot, the less the virus will be spread. Coconut water has gotten much publicity lately. It is made from the clear water inside the coconut, not the coconut flesh from which we get coconut milk. Coconut water does contain some potassium (about 200mg per 100ml), is low in sodium and calories and contains primarily water which keeps you hydrated. All the staff of our pharmacy send our best wishes to you all for a happy, healthy and safe holiday season.

Heavy snowfall may break the budget

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter During the Nov. 27 regular Town Council meeting Councillor Rocky Blokland brought up concerns from the downtown businesses regarding the Nov. 16 and 17 storm. The matter was brought forward to the Dec. 4 meeting so that Director of Operations and Engineering Jesse Parker could speak to the matter. Blokland said they understand the town does an excellent job with snow removal in the rest of the town and are not trying to jump the queue on the priority list either, but there is a continual problem that needs to be addressed. The windrow that we had Saturday, Sunday and all day Monday (Nov. 16 18) was at least four feet high and it ran about seven feet out into the street. There was still angle parking, the driving lanes were not even two full lanes open; they were down to about one. Its not working, said Blokland. Putting the windrow in the middle of the street is apparently unacceptable, said Blokland, but after that snowstorm the businesses on the north side of 2nd Ave were crippled. He didnt check 3rd Ave and 4th Ave. Punching holes in the windrow worked until people parked in front of it, which defeated the purpose. These windrows are dangerous for people. A lot of seniors are trying to hop over these banks, trying to get out of their vehicles, you pretty well have to go out there and help them, said Blokland. He said the snowstorm happened on a Saturday and the businesses didnt expect it to be cleaned up on a Sunday but did think it would be done on Monday morning. Instead, it was done Monday night at 7 p.m. Night time snow removal has been something the town has done for the past few years said Parker. Parker said administration has discussed options for snow clearing in the downtown area. He agreed there are opportunities to do things different in the downtown. What we have done this year to try and help with that is if we get snowfalls over the course of an evening, we have identied two staff members minimum to come in at 5:30 a.m. and were currently dedicating one of those staff to doing windrowing and snowplowing downtown and the second staff member is addressing the primary one and two routes, said Parker. Parker said based on the stafng numbers they need all their staff to make one removal crew. There would be one person on the grader, one on the snow blower and there are three trucks. If anyone is on holidays they are stretched and hiring contractors. Were starting to think to meet the expectations of the downtown businesses, you know really cooperate and help the downtown businesses to succeed, its almost a bigger effort than what we can do ourselves while we also focus our intention on the other roadways in town, said Parker. It can take four hours minimum to remove the snow downtown with the snowplowing, windrowing and the actual removal. The crews start at 5:30 a.m., but to be done before the businesses open is a challenge. Councillor John Rempel had a suggestion of pushing all the snow to the south side of the street, and putting up no parking signs, so that all the angle stalls on the north side stay open. Then they could clean the street that night because the snow would all be on one side of the street and the cars would all be parked on the other side of the street. Between the contracted services, sand and salt, there was a budget of $72,000. Before the storm on Dec. 2 approximately $20,000 of that had been spent. As a result of this snowfall, weve contracted trucks, loaders, graders, et cetera and as a result, we are expecting we will likely exhaust most of our $72,000, and potentially request additional funds for expenditure, depending on the efciency in which we can remove snow, said Parker. Our goal is to work within our budgeted amount, however, with approximately $52,000 remaining for this most recent snow event, plus re-stocking of sand/salt supplies, we will be close to the budgeted amount. For the Dec. 2 storm Parker said the town was spending approximately $1,000/hour in contracted services to get the roads passable and safe for residents. The tally for the storm brought the town up to its budgeted amount for contracted services, if not a little over. Parker will be speaking to council at the Dec. 18 meeting to request additional funds to nish off the year.

Caring for Albertas children

DAVE HANCOCK Minister of Human Services

I want our children in care to experience what every child in this province should enjoy a safe, loving and nurturing home that gives them every possible opportunity to reach their full potential. I know all MLAs in the legislature share this goal. Recently, the Edmonton Journal and Calgary Herald have published a joint series on the tragic deaths of children in care. It is an important and heartbreaking issue that merits public discussion and debate, which is why I welcome this report. The stories are a reminder that we need to do everything we can to protect Albertas children.

The Journal and Herald looked at case data dating back to 1999, but there have been significant changes that have happened over the last two years that have resulted from the hard work of our government to ensure we are improving the way we care for our vulnerable children. In 2012, we created the independent Office of the Child and Youth Advocate. Under our legislation, the Advocate must be notified of all serious injuries and deaths of children receiving services (whether they are in the provinces care or not) and can access all government information relating to the child in question. We also established the Child and Family Services Council for Quality Assurance. The Council

is made up of experts and advocates who are appointed by government but who work independently with Human Services to identify effective practices and make recommendations to the Minister for improving and strengthening child intervention services. In 2012, our government began reporting all deaths of children in care, regardless of their cause. This information is available in the Human Services Annual Report as well as the Child and Youth Advocates Annual Report. In addition, every time a child in the care or custody of Human Services dies, no matter the cause, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducts an investigation. We know when it comes to protecting our children, we can always do better. One death of a child in care is too many. Continued on Page 8

Teaching the value of money

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter This year marks 11 years that volunteers have been going to Crowther Memorial Junior High School (CMJHS) to teach students about nances. The volunteers go as part of Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta talking to the kids about personal nance, how to budget their money, protecting themselves against fraud, and basic investments. This year volunteers also went to speak with Trinity Christian Academy (TCA) and Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) students. At CMJHS over 200 students in Grade 7 took part in the Dollars and Sense program on Nov. 6. Sixty Grade 9 students at HCC were taught Economics for Success on Nov. 19, and 19 Grade 7, 8 and 9 students at TCA were also taught Dollars with Sense. Students at Standard School took part in the Dollars and Sense program on Dec. 12. For the most part it is really positive, it is real life so they can relate to it, it actually sparked some great conversations this year about being responsible citizens and even how the media plays a role in it, said Grade 7 CMJHS teacher Jennifer Bakken. She said the program really gets the students talking and sharing their experiences, if they have jobs, what they do to earn money, how they save, things like that. She nds the program to be a positive experience that the school will continue to take part of into the future. Four CMJHS students shared their thoughts on the program. I thought it was a very good way to spend our time, I learned a lot of stuff, said Blake Sander. I thought it was a good opportunity to have especially when you have your own bank account right now and just to save and spend and just to be smart about it, said Hailey Sutherland. I like it because it was a great life skill, what I learned was that when you buy a TV and it says you dont have to pay for the rst 10 months or whatever it really can end up costing you more money than it would have in the rst place, said Metaya Anderson. It was pretty good, most of the stuff I did know but I learned more information about it, said Kennedy Shiner. One of the things she learned was about credit cards and bank accounts; she distrusted them before taking part in the program, but said the program has shown her they arent all that bad. One activity for the group was a menu for pizza and soda and trying to gure out how to have enough for everyone, without spending all of their money. At Holy Cross, things were a little different with the Economics for Success class. Chris Rebeyka and Raeanne Pettifer spoke about their thoughts on the program. One of the things they learned was how to manage a budget. They also learned about different wages and the amount of time in school that would be needed to get some of those higher paying jobs. I really liked it, it was a lot of fun and it taught you a lot. Most people dont realize how many things you have to pay for in a month, said Pettifer. I was spending a lot more than I was making, I was like $500 over budget, said Rebeyka. Each student had to ll a chart and a number under each category about how much you would spend on your apartment, travelling, food and so on per month. They then drew jobs out of an envelope, it was in the format of a paycheque, and it listed their job and how much money they got. I didnt make very much so it was kind of hard to meet my budget, said Rebeyka, who drew a salesman position at Enterprise. Pettifer lucked out as a legal assistant splitting rent with another girl, whereas Rebeyka lived alone. Pettifer and her roommate put $600 into savings and still had about $130 left over at the end of the month. The students and their volunteers talked about income tax, minimum wages, RRSPs, and the difference between net and gross pay. It was really eye opening to see that youre not going to be making a lot of money or become a millionaire the rst year youre out of school, or youre not really going to be saving a lot because there are so many things that your money goes into once you make it, said Rebeyka. It was good to see it now so its not such a huge shock in a couple of years when we actually do realize how much it is to live not with your parents. He found that no matter how well you save or how wisely you spend it, there are always going to be things you have to spend it on. You kind of got to realize what your parents do every month and it makes you a lot more grateful for it, said Pettifer. I think everybody will use it once they get out of high school or if they move out while in high school.

We have been working hard to protect all of Albertas children, and were going to keep moving forward. Thats why last week, I committed to publicly tracking and reporting our progress toward meeting all recommendations that relate to children in care, whether theyre from the Child and Family Services Council for Quality Assurance, the Child Advocate or the Chief Medical Examiner Its also why I have invited our opposition colleagues to join me in a ministerial roundtable to

discuss critical questions raised about the death of children in care in hopes of tabling a joint report in the legislature for debate. I want Albertans to know how were doing and to have condence that their child welfare system is protecting and nurturing Albertas most vulnerable children. There is always more to do. And were going to keep making our system better for Albertas children, together. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at Dave.Hancock@gov. ab.ca.

No new borrowing predicted for 2014 budget

SHaNNON LEClaIR Times Reporter Mel Tiede, director of corporate services for the Town of Strathmore presented the 2014 budget at the Dec. 4 regular council meeting. One point highlighted from the budget is that the municipal tax for 2013 is 2.5 per cent higher than the budgeted tax of 2013. The 2.5 per cent is budget over budget. When you facture in a growth factor of approximately one per cent or something close to that, the actual tax increase that the average property will be seeing will be less than two per cent, said Tiede. The budget also includes an increase in spending for services provided to the community by the Youth Club of Strathmore -$110,00- and $129,000 for the Strathmore Family and Community Support Services (FCSS). The additional funds for FCSS are mainly for wages. Linda Nelson, deputy chief administrative ofcer, said that FCSS has taken on approximately 60 additional home care support clients, and are providing free snow clearing services for seniors and those with disabilities, which has added to the increase. As for the increase of to the Youth Club, the town now provides stafng dollars under the umbrella of FCSS. The club still operates as a separate entity with its own board and charitable status. The town is currently paying for two part time positions and up to 40 hours of facilitator time, and building utilities. Beginning in January the town will increase it to two full time positions, with the rest staying the same. There is no fee increase in the budget for water, sewer or waste. Capital spending for various projects will be $4,773,000 and will be funded 92 per cent by grants, and the balance will be funded by reserves. Pathways and playgrounds account for $266,000 of the capital spending. The largest capital project is the reconstruction of Lakeside Blvd at $1,575,000, said Tiede. The second largest is the waste water line reconstruction at the Bow River, the line was damaged by the ooding in the spring of 2013. It is anticipated that the provincial grant funding will be received to cover the cost of this project, thats the disaster grant funding. In all there are 30 projects included in the 2014 capital program. The debt owed by the town has been steadily coming down. The debt principal payments totaled $1,542,000 at the end of 2012. The debt owed by the town is $16,930,000 and will be reduced to $15,460,000 at the end of this year and it will go down by a further $1,542,000 (In 2014), said Tiede. No new borrowing is anticipated for 2014.

98% of Alberta connected

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Announced ttingly by a simultaneous online live video streaming from Hanna, St. Paul, and Calgary, 98 per cent of the provinces households are now able to access high-speed Internet. With this new innovation more students can conduct online research for school projects, new markets can be explored by business, and more families can connect around the world. If you live in the remote reaches of our province, getting connected can make a big difference in your life, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Verlyn Olson said in a press release. I expect that rural Albertans will take full advantage of all of the opportunities. In November 2011, Premier Alison Redford set the dream in motion when she instructed the Ministers of Service Alberta, and Agriculture and Rural Development, to devise a plan to link rural households to the World Wide Web. The plan, called the Final Mile Rural Connectivity Initiative, provided high-speed satellite services to sparsely populated areas of the province, where bre optic cable may not have been feasible previously for Internet connections. A total of 23 rural sites were installed a cost of $5.1 million. Alberta has ensured a level playing eld for all of its citizens, no matter where they live. It opens new markets, invests in families and communities, and sets the stage for continued prosperity, Minister of Service Alberta Manmeet Bhullar said. The Government of Alberta will monitor the expanded services and assist providers in maintaining service coverage information.

MANNY EVERETT Times Contributor Leroys Motel was a busy hub at the end of November with camera crews and some famous actors milling around for the lming of Fargo (a new miniseries by Joel and Ethan Coen). The Coen brothers are executive producers of the 10-episode series, which is being produced for U.S. cable channel FX. Fraser Flamond, owner/operator of Leroys, said it was a busy place for a couple of days in November when the group came and booked two oors (23 rooms) for a two-day period during lming. They were awesome and respectful. They rented the Gas Bar and the Oriental Grill along with the Motel for their lming. Their crews came in and redid some of the rooms and the ofce with paint and props and when they left they repainted and put everything back in its original spots. For a little while, Strathmore was transformed into Bemidji, Minnesota, where the show is to

take place. Many drivers on the highway were concerned at the gas prices the day of the shoot because the signs read $233.9 for gas and $254.9 for diesel. For Flamond, the idea for a movie shoot was not new to him. Last year, Leroys was lmed by local producer Stephen Lubig for his independent production lm called After the Storm. Flamond said, there arent a lot of places that maintain original design as most places upgrade and modernize. Its what made Leroys enticing for the productions. The cast for the upcoming mini-series includes such actors as Billy Bob Thornton (Monsters Ball), Colin Hanks (Dexter), Martin Freeman (Sherlock), Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad) and Ontario-born Oliver Platt (The Big C) and Joshua Close (The Unusuals). Next year, 2014, Leroys celebrates its 40-year anniversary, and it was nice that the producers wrote Leroys right into the script. Look for the release of Fargo in the spring of 2014.

Snow removal time changes

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Parents in the community should be a little happier with the snow removal time changes. Councillor John Rempel spoke to council about changing the snow removal start time from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. With the start time at 8 a.m. many people with younger families have to pack up their kids, move the car, then go get the car around 8:30 a.m. to bring it back to take their kids to school or go to work. Rempel said between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. is usually the busiest time in the morning for many households. Some cant park their car around the corner or on another street because if its a cold night, then they may need to plug in their car overnight. Rempel said the chances are the snowplows dont show up before 9 a.m. anyway and the residents get stressed out for no reason. I have no concern if we move it from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. but if it gets much later than that the Peace Ofcers only have so much time to get out and get the vehicles moved or ticketed or whatever is going to happen. I think it would be better if we did change it from 8 a.m., 8 a.m. is difcult, said Chief Administrative Ofcer for the Town Dwight Stanford. Director of Operations and Engineering Jesse Parker said enforcement could begin at 8:30 a.m. instead of the suggested 9 a.m. so that enforcement would have time to get cars off the streets, and then the start time doesnt slide back to later. Were pretty tight now with just a six hour work window so were trying to get as much done in those six hours that we can, said Parker. The signs will be changed as soon as possible with the new start time. It shortens the enforcement window a little, but Parker said he has talked to his staff about trying to identify problem areas with vehicles and starting away from there to give the Peace Ofcers a chance to address those problem areas.

The UFA Bisons hosted their 13th annual Christmas Shopping with the Bisons on Dec. 8 at Strathmores Calgary Coop. Jake Winstone (l-r), assistant captain Ryan Zeniuk, Chase Gingerich, and captain Mackenzie Bauer went shopping throughout the store early Sunday morning.

Bisons host 13th Christmas Shopping event

ARYssAH STANKEVITscH Times Reporter Even with an afternoon game later in the day, all 20 UFA Bisons players each had an assist off of the ice as well. The organization hosted the annual Christmas Shopping with the Bisons on Dec. 8 at Strathmores Calgary Co-op. The local triple-A midget team helped children of single-parent homes select gifts for their loved ones and offered a helping-hand in the wrapping process. This is the 13th year of the Bisons annual Christmas shopping event, bringing humility and perspective to the players. The cost of a hockey stick is $300, said Bisons general manager Wayne Hansen. Lets face it, to play hockey at this level is not cheap. Sometimes, I think our boys can maybe lose a little bit of touch with, you know, that theres others out there that are less fortunate. This brings that into them. It drives it home. Hansen said that his veteran players point out the event to the rookies each season as a day to remember. Its one of the events when they come back, they talk about it, Hansen said. This is something that we do. Were the only team in our league that does it. Its pretty special. The Bisons ask the elementary schools in town to see who could benet from the Christmas shopping. Theyre the most in contact with the families and they know that are most deserving of something like this, Hansen said. The kids, ages 6-12, were led around

the store for a couple hours, and then invited to join the Bisons to complete the Christmas mission. Once theyre done shopping, theyre going to go in the (wrapping) room, and were going to test the boys skills, Hansen laughed. Connor Boyd, assistant captain on the Bisons, was involved with last years Christmas shopping too. Its one of the bigger things we do in the community its always one that you look forward to, he said. I think its really good to get involved with the community and do what we can to help out others. Its always fun to help out the kids and put a smile on their face. Every year, Co-op pays to a certain amount for all the childrens gifts. After that, alumni donors support the rest of the event. Its funny its before my time, about 13 years ago, when Co-op was approached, it was just an idea, Hansen said. (The Bisons) started going around to businesses, looking to get 10 or 12 involved, that would contribute $100 a piece or whatever that they could do. Co-op said, you know what? Well just do the whole thing. Though the children receive gifts for their families out of the Christmas shopping, Bisons Coach Dan MacDonald thinks his squad receives a gift from participating in something like this as well. They come from good families where money is pretty much there. This is good for them to see that theres other sides of the world, he said. Anytime you do something for others, youre better for it.

Creating a vibrant community

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter On Nov. 21 the Wheatland Further Education Society (WFES) hosted a Community Dialogue: Creating a Vibrant Learning Community workshop at the Royal Canadian Legion, Strathmore. The goal of the workshop was to gain community input to identify and prioritizing the challenges, barriers and unmet needs that currently impact adult learners, employers, agencies and other in our community. Representatives from the AB Government, Golden Hills School Division, Wheatland County, Bow Valley College, McBride Career Group, Gregory & Harriman & Associates, Strathmore & District Chamber of Commerce, Strathmore Municipal Library and many other community members gathered to discuss different ways to create a vibrant learning community. A round table discussion took place regarding the following: 1. What do you see as the needs of adult learners in our community? 2. What does a Vibrant Learning Community look like to you? 3. What are the challenges and/or barriers to meeting those needs? 4. How can you contribute to this vibrant learning community? Individual questionnaires were also completed referencing the core activities and future direction, as well as the challenges, barriers and unmet needs of adult learners in the community. What are the priorities for our community? The needs of adult learners in the community, for example leadership development, employee directed programs, access to technology, ESL/ELL and much more. Joyce Bazant, Executive Director for WFES, said it was a very informative meeting. WFES can be involved in almost all aspects of education regardless of what age. Were try to best visualize how we can best partner with different organization and/or groups to make that happen, said Bazant.

REMEMBErING OUr rOOTS ~Nick & Rose Makrugin

JOHN GODSMAN Times Contributor Nick was born in Russia in 1937, the second child in a family of ve children. Following the end of the Second World War, they moved to Clyde, Alta. to stay with cousins. The family moved to Calgary in 1950, where two more children were born. Nick remembers going to school in Russia when he was ve years old, then completing his education at Colonel Walker School in Calgary. Roses mother was born in Norway, and moved to Calgary in 1931. Her father was born in Kamsack, Sask., and moved to Calgary in 1933. Rose was born in 1937, and has two brothers. Nick and Rose met while they both lived in Parkdale, a subdivision of Calgary. They were married on April 3, 1959 and this marriage produced a son and a daughter, and now they have two granddaughters, Ava June and Anastasia. Nick started work with Canadian Pacic Railway in 1954 in Calgary, and spent the next 25 years there working as a switchman and brakeman. He also worked part-time as an installer for Cal West Elevators, who constructed and installed freight and passenger elevators on high-rise buildings. A construction elevator is known as a hoist, and is used to transport material and workers, usually on the outside of a high-rise building. In 1999, with his son Jarret, they formed their own hoist company - MAC RAC & PINION HOIST INC, which has taken them to Fort McMurray, Northern Alberta, Saskatchewan and here in the Calgary area working on industrial and public buildings. Their daughter Shelly works as a producer at CTV, and has just completed her Masters in Communication. Rose spent her working years in the employ of both the Provincial and Federal Governments. When Nick and Rose moved to Strathmore in 1999, the intention was to retire, but Nick still works with Jarret every day, while Rose volunteers with different charities around town. Their community activities include working with different committees at the Strathmore Legion #10, the Food Bank, and the High School Rodeo. The main change theyve seen over the past 14 years has been the increase of population from around 6,000 in 1999 to 12,400+ now.

Bullying.
Thats not the Alberta way.

Premier Alison Redford

Stop Bill 46
In 1977, Premier Peter Lougheed promised that in all future contract negotiations, provincial employees would have the right to binding arbitration in lieu of the right to strike. Now, Premier Alison Redford has rammed through Bill 46, which goes back on that promise and takes the right to arbitration away from 22,000 front-line government employees. Redfords Bill 46 gives government the power to freeze wages, with no independent arbitrator determining what is fair and justied. Thats not negotiating, thats bullying. And bullying is not the Alberta way. The Alberta way has always been to keep your promises and respect the rights of others.

Walking to remember
SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter On the morning of Oct. 20, Mary Marshman laced up her runners and began her 13.1mile (22km) walk in San Francisco. This was a walk she will never forget, and one she embarked on to remember. Marshman walked to remember her husband Dwayne in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training walk. Dwayne was diagnosed in June of 2010 with Mantel Cell Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer. He lost his battle on Aug. 24, 2012. When Dwayne was in the hospital I had seen the banner (for Team in Training) on Unit 57 they always had the banner hanging up there and I said to myself, Mary one day you are going to go in that walk. I had kind of forgotten about it, said Marshman. Last May, while at a womens retreat in Calgary, she came across a booth where people were selling bracelets for the walk. She gathered information and signed herself up. Marshman began training, opting to go at it alone, taking walks around Rockyford and her elds. The reason why I wanted to do it was to for sure honour Dwaynes memory, because he was such a ... he was my everything, said Marshman. Raising funds to help further the research being done is also paramount and another big reason why Marshman chose to walk with the Team in Training. All money she raised stays in Canada. Even with the research that had come through, even though it didnt save Dwaynes life, it gave him three years that he would never have had if the research hadnt been there to put in place the treatments. There were 30,000 women and a few good men who walked that foggy day in San Francisco. There was a banquet where top donors from the United States were recognized, and Marshman realized out of those 30,000 women, she would have likely been number 11 of the top fundraisers, a realization that made her feel both proud and humble. From August until November she was able to raise $16,650, which she credits to all the people that supported and believed in her and Dwayne. Its something I am so thankful I took the opportunity to do because theres that feeling that I hope I never forget, it was so many things and even still today I dont know what word would best describe, it was very profound, it was surreal, it was fun. I loved doing it, it was great, said Marshman. When you think you are doing something for somebody else you are so richly awarded, you receive so much back that. Im very, very grateful for the people in my life and the people that sponsored me and I am just very honoured to be from Rockyford. It took her four hours to complete the half marathon. While she was walking, Marshman had the chance to hear some of the stories from the other women, which was a very powerful feeling. We were all just there to remember, to honour those people in our lives whatever their story is, and just to remember. Dwayne had always been a strong worker and community oriented. He coached hockey and then ringette. In 2010 Ringers for a Reason was held in Rockyford to help raise money, the community wanted to give back to the man that had given them so much. $50,000 was raised and the funds were donated to purchase iPads for the Cancer Unit at Foothills hospital. Dwayne was a staple in the community and when he passed he left a hole in the hearts of everyone. He really, really had such an inspiring attitude that he taught us so much, he just gave us such that gifts that at the end of the day I remember that I have so much to be thankful for. Even if he isnt in our lives anymore he gave us so much. I had him in my life for almost 38 years so I remember to be very thankful for that because it is a gift, said Marshman. Their family learned to live one day at a time, and truly live it that way. Marshman said she needs to gure out how to hold onto that and keep that in her everyday living, to just live in the moment. Thats one thing cancer teaches you, or a terminal illness, is just to stay in the day and to be very grateful, said Marshman. Anyone wishing to donate still can by going to www.teamintraining.ca, click on donate and enter Mary Marhsmans name. Last fall the Calgary Health Trust contacted her and asked if they could use Dwaynes story to help raise funds. They sent out 60,000 letters and raised over $171,000, the most they have ever raised in a single campaign. I think to myself, Dwayne you are still raising money, you are still giving back, said Marshman. He really was quite a guy, I was very blessed and proud and honoured to have been his wife. What I know now is that a lifetime isnt long enough, no matter what that life time is its not long enough, because even if I had been married to Dwayne for 60 years I would not have wanted to see him go.

Kevin Elder on behalf of the Rockyford Lions donated a cheque for $1,000 to Mary Marshman. Marshman took part in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Team and Training walk to honour the memory of her husband Dwayne.

First hunt success

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Preparing to kill a deer for the rst time can be a frightening experience, but when a qualied mentor is present to support and advise a new hunter, it makes for a safe, controlled experience and brings home a hunters textbook learning. They have seen a video and read the books, but it is much different when they do it themselves and it is laid out on the ground in front of them. So now, when the deer hits the ground, they have someone to remind them what to do, how to approach it and make sure they do it safely. It often makes or breaks their choice to enter into the hunting fraternity, said Dave Papaplawski, Alberta Hunter Education Instructors Association (AHEIA) Coordinator for Conservation. Mentorship is so important; it is a component that isnt covered by the courseMost of the kids that participate in our mentoring program dont have family situations where they have someone to mentor them, taking them under their wing, and showing them the ins and outs. AHEIA offers Hunter Education courses that are required to obtain an Alberta hunting license. See www.AHEIA.com. The courses are structured in a way that leads to safe, respectful, ethical and humane hunting and shing practises. Youth 13 years of age and older can apply for their hunting license once they have their certication. This hunting season Matt (last name withheld), a local teen (age 13) and member of Wheatlands Conservation and Wildlife Association Shooting Club, went for his rst hunt with local sportsman and instructor Larry Olson. The partnership was arranged by AHEIA under their First Time Hunter program. Olson took Matt out of the Strathmore area to nd his mule deer. He helped Matt get his tags and immediately supervised everything that went on during the hunt. Firearm safety licenses are issued after youth are 18 or over, so mentors let their student utilize their guns for their shoot and have to take responsibility for anything that happens when the gun is used. Mentors must be with the student at all times and give immediate supervision and monitoring, allowing the student to know when and where they take their shot. We teach them how to respect the farmers land and gun safety. Once they have their hunter safety, it helps because they have been handling a gun for a year before they go out. For a 13-year-old boy, it is excellent that he knows that you respect the farmers land and there should be nothing behind what he is shooting at, said Olson. Its not the killing part of it, it is more about being in the outdoors and the enjoyment of the outdoors. The area they hunted had a good number of deer. They sighted many antlered deer during the day, but Matt had learned to pass them by, as his tag was for antlerless mule deer doe. Matt shot one deer and also participated in cleaning and skinning the deer. Papaplawski said the AHEIA Hunter Education courses teach the students that responsible, ethical hunters take all the edible portions of the meat and ungula in animals and birds. It also teaches them how to hunt with a partner. The key to all of this process is nding a hunting partner. It is just as difcult to nd a good hunting partner as it is to nd your spouse. You spend a lot of time with them. You have to trust them, know that they think like you and you are going to be safe and know that their morals and ethics and everything are like yours, said Papaplowski. After the experience, students submit an essay describing the success of their rst experience. Matt summed up his experience with the following: I learned a lot on this trip, but the most important thing was how to be a good hunter. You must obey the rules; make sure there is nothing you can hit behind the deer if you miss, and not to lose the clip to your gun. You have to respect the property and make sure you are in an area where you have permission from the owner, said Matt. I will denitely go hunting again next year. It was a great experience and I wish I could do it all over again. And now, Im just sitting here, eating deer patties and writing this story.

Food drive better than anticipated

Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) held a food drive from Nov. 18 to 29, with a goal of 400 items, one for each student and staff at HCC. The drive ended with a Friday Food Drive Hat Day where students could wear their hats to class if they brought in two donations. We collected a total of 440 items, which will be donated to our local food bank. Thank you to everyone who donated to HCCs food drive as well as the clothing drive which preceded it.

55 Plus Games loan

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter A bylaw was created and given rst reading at the Dec. 4 regular town council meeting to loan the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games Committee $10,000. The committee will be receiving grant funding from the Games Administration in March or April to help offset the costs of hosting the games, but in the meantime they require funds to begin training, among other things. The bylaw was given rst reading and will return to council for second and third reading at a later date. Strathmore will be hosting the 2015 Summer Games, which will be July 16 to 19. Councillor Bob Sobol said the directors of the committee are establishing sub committees and chairs and they are looking for members. Anyone interested in becoming a part of one of the 19 committees is asked to contact Tracy Simpson at 403-934-4692. LIBRARY CONCERNS Councillor Denise Peterson attended a Marigold Library System meeting and brought forward the concern that they believe the per capita grant is being based off of the 2010 population. The library said that is not accurate and because of it they are losing signicant amounts of money. Peterson said the library had asked council to support them and write a letter to the Minister of Advanced Education and the Minister of Culture asking them to revisit the population numbers and requesting appropriate funding per capita based on the current population. Big Christmas sounds from Rosebud

MANNY EVeReTT Times Contributor Shows at Rosebud never disappoint. The community held their annual Christmas Concert evening on Sunday, Dec. 8 with four of their community choral groups participating. An International Christmas Concert was the theme of the production this year. Held at Rosebuds Covenant Church, the audience was packed out for the performance. The Rosebud Chorale, consisting of this years student body, sang Gaudete (arr. Stephan Hateld), African Celebration (arr. Sally Albrecht - Africa), De Virgin Mary had a Baby Boy (arr. Malcolm Sargent - Trinidad) and the Jingle Bells Travelogue by Livingston Gearhart. The Rosebud Younger Company performed their musical celebration with Christmas Around the World, which was written by Anita Winters with song selections from John Purifoys musical. Some amazing talent was shown by these young artists in their solos and the choreography that they learned from choreographer Deanne Bertsch. The Masterworks Choir, consisting of around 40 members under the direction of Bill Hamm, travelled around the globe with such pieces as Gloria (by F.J. Hayden in Austria), African Noel (arr. Andre Thomas Africa), Il Est Ne Le Divin Enfant (arr. Rutter traditional French) and the Latvian Carols by Andrejs Jansons from Latvia. Rosa Cantorum, an extension of the Masterworks Choir, performed last on the list followed by all the joint choirs singing various renditions of Silent Night in many different languages. Director Bill Hamm honored long time Rosebud visionary LaVerne Erikson with a birthday tribute for his 70 birthday celebrated that day. Bertsch concluded the evening with a tribute of thanks to Bill Hamm for all the hard work and dedication that he puts into the choirs and casts over the years. Bertsch, who has been singing for Hamm for the last 20 years, was pleased to help present a gift of thanks from all those involved to Hamm in the form of a new golden retriever puppy, which left Hamm speechless. Rosebud knows how to create the community feel and shared that so well with their entire Christmas performance.

The Hamlet of Rosebud hosted its annual International Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 8. Shown here is the Dinner Music Ensemble doing Riu Riu Chiu from Spain.

Silver Sharks host mini meet

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Strathmore Silver Sharks have impressed at their rst two meets of the season the NCSA Fall Invitational from Nov. 9-10, and the Winter Cup Invitational from Nov. 2324 but looked forward to hosting the Strathmore Mini Meet on Dec. 7 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Strathmore Civic Centre. This one is an unofcial meet, Sharks Head Coach Jen Mertz said. Were hoping by next season that we can actually host an ofcial meet. We have to build our parents; they have to take training in order to be ofcials on deck. Were just in that process, we have quite a few parents on board. The Sharks will be using a timing piece donated by the Strathmore Lions to the club. This will be the rst time that a lot of our competitors are racing, Mertz said. The juniors did not race at the Fall Invitational or Winter Cup, and the only other junior meet of the season so far was cancelled on Nov. 16 due to weather. We do these annually, Mertz said, of the Strathmore Mini Meet. This is our winter one, and then weve done some in the spring as well. Its just to give the kids a taste of competition, the younger kids. Its also a bit of a team-building swim meet for our older swimmers and younger swimmers to mix. Typically they swim at two different times. The juniors, aged 5 to 12 years, and seniors, aged 9 to 17 years, have both had the goal of building their swim technique strength this season. We spent all of October and most of November really building a strong platform of technical strengths within our club. Weve actually been quite noticed on deck with the other swim clubs. Now were just entering into doing some pretty hard training, Mertz said. The club will take a short break over the holidays, and then continue with that intense training in the New Year. Provincial meets begin in February and March. Its going excellent. We had a really strong medal collection when we went to the last two meets, Mertz said. We have seen great improvement in our swimmers.

The UFA Bisons were victorious over the Fort Saskatchewan Boston Pizza Rangers on Dec. 8 at home. In the 4-1 win, Philip Anderson and Sebastian Kilcommons had three point nights. The Bisons are tied for the first place lead in the South Division with the Calgary Royals; both have 30 points.

Ws for the Bisons

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The UFA Bisons narrowly pulled out the 5-3 win against the SSAC Boston Pizza Athletics at home on Dec. 7, but came back stronger the next day, with another victory over the Fort Saskatchewan Boston Pizza Rangers. The score was 4-1. SSAC originally had a two-goal lead, but the Bisons had a ve-goal effort in the third, including two from Shane Fraser. The Bisons only managed 17 shots on net, while they had 29 against them. We had quite a few injuries, and guys are sick right now, so I think we did really well under all the circumstances we were playing with, said Bisons coach Dan MacDonald. Two key players for the Bisons have been out for a couple of weeks: assistant captain Ryan Zeniuk and team captain Mackenzie Bauer. Those are two good players for us. Its hard to replace them, MacDonald said. Zeniuk has an enlarged spleen and it just got better now. Mackenzies got a sports hernia. He wont be able to play for another three weeks. In the Fort Saskatchewan victory, three of the Bisons four markers came on the man advantage. The

Aryssah Stankevitsch Photos

team overall had a stronger offensive effort with 35 shots on net not a surprise, however, as the Rangers are at the bottom of their division. Bisons defensemen Sebastian Kilcommons and Philip Anderson both had three point nights. Other guys have to step up and thats what good teams do, MacDonald said. They ll the void. Thats what happened on the Saturday and Sunday, I thought other guys stepped up when they got their chance, and they played well. Bisons goaltenders Garrett Mason and Carter Seminuk were praised by their coach; the latter has a .927 save percentage and a 2.07 goals against average. Condent goaltending and effective defensive play have a substantial role in the Bisons success, MacDonald said. Its a combination of both. I think we are playing better in the defensive zone but we are getting good goaltending. Both goaltenders are playing really well, MacDonald said. When you get that, it makes you look like youre playing good defensively. Our goaltenders are really holding us and making some real good saves. The Bisons are tied for the lead in standings beside the Calgary Royals with 30 points in the South Division.

REJOICE! This Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent, is known as Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin, to Rejoice. The opening prayer today to Rejoice in the Lord always ... Indeed the Lord is near (Philippians 4). Our goal of preparation for the birth of the Messiah is near, and we should soon nish our preparations. John the Baptist, while in prison, sent this question to Jesus via Johns disciples: are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another? The answer that came was: tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me. What better reason could there be to rejoice than to realize that the long foretold Messiah was present in their midst and time? Our reading of the scripture passages of Matthew at this time of the year call to mind our need for preparation, and ultimate celebration at Christmas. Expensive, purchased, materiel gifts are just not in the same value as the realization that the Messiah has come amongst Humankind. Gaudete -- Rejoice -- for all of us. Crowther hosts 1st basketball tourney

The first basketball tournament for junior high players was held Dec. 6 - 7 hosted by Crowther Memorial Junior High School. The Cougars faced off against the Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks.

Hawks youth movement

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter With all of last years senior basketball Grade 12s having graduated, new boys basketball coach Tony Irving, is preparing his Holy Cross Collegiate Grade 10s and Grade 11s for junior varsity play this year. We had a senior team last year, but we have no Grade 12s this year. We have three Grade 11s, and nine Grade 10s, Irving said. These three Grade 11s, their senior team went to provincials last year. The Hawks varsity team lost in the provincial semi nals last season. Irving, whos coached basketball for more than 20 years, wanted non-selsh players to ll his J.V. roster. What I stress is that individualism and ego take away from the team. Im trying to emphasize that its all about team, Irving said. It doesnt matter what skill level the kids are at, if theyre using their skills to benet the team, then thats what were looking for. If theyre using their skills to benet themselves, then thats not what were looking for. The Hawks practice twice a week, working on fundamentals of a well-oiled machine. We work on offensive skills shooting and positioning proper mechanics, Irving said. Im more of a structural coach, so no matter what they do, whether its a fast break or how they run defense, everything they do is structured. Those are a lot of things we work on in practice. The Hawks had their rst game in Okotoks against Foothills on Dec. 12, before the time of print, and will be hosting their home tournament in March.

Warriors now 18-1

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter With an impressive 48 shots on net, the AA Wheatland bantam Warriors knocked off the Red Deer Steel Kings 7-2 on Dec. 7 at home. Kyle Merkosky had three points (now placing him third in league scoring with 37 points), while Chayse Hnatowich and Robert Butterwick scored two goals each. Were pushing for the kids to shoot when they get an opportunity to shoot, Wheatland Chiefs said Warriors coach Mark Laycock, especially for rebounds. I know sometimes we try to get too cute, trying to make the best plays to make a goal or whatever, but I think were stressing to shoot from everywhere. The only way youre going to get goals is if you get pucks on the net. The following night, the Warriors defeated another Red Deer team, the Red Deer Ramada, by a score of 6-2. Though Red Deer opened the scoring, the Warriors powered back with three goals in the rst, and three goals in the second. Zach Suntjens had two assists, and Kaleb Jardine added a goal and a helper. We knew at the start of the year that we had a team, where if you put anybody on the ice, we could score, Laycock said of his well-rounded offense. I think in some cases, guys have been stagnant so far this year with getting opportunities and but not scoring. Lately, theyve been going in for them. I think they should be rewarded more, but I just have to preach to them to keep getting chances, and itll come. The Warriors have their next game in Taber on Dec. 14. They currently are rst in the league, with an 18-1 record. CHIEFS UPDATE The Wheatland midget Chiefs shut out the Medicine Hat Venom away on Dec. 7, by a score of 7-0, but returned home the next night to lose to the Sylvan Lake Lakers, 4-2. The Chiefs managed 50 shots on net against Medicine Hat, while the Venom managed roughly half of that total. Thomas Reinhardt and Jayden Smith scored a goal and three assists each; teammate Mckay Bray had a three-point night, and Cody Willis added two assists. Against the Lakers, the score was tied after the rst period. Sylvan Lake then scored three powerplay markers in the second. Willis had the teams two lone goals, placing him fth in league scoring with 29 points in 15 games. Emotions ran high as Blair Roszell was sent out for a game misconduct after a contact-to-the-head penalty, and has been suspended for one game. Grady Strath was also released from the game for another contact-to-the-head major. The Chiefs next game is against Sylvan Lake on Dec. 13. BRAVES BREAK The Wheatland Braves rested this week but return to action at home on Dec. 15 against the Lethbridge Red Hurricanes.

BELLEY, Devon Scott

1984 - 2013

The Rockyview Raiders defeated MLAC Elite Sportswear at home in Chestermere on Dec. 8, by a score of 5-1. Strathmore-born Kody Hammond had a hat-trick for the Raiders, assisted twice by Chris Rebeyka and Alec Biletsky both also from Strathmore. Trygve Many Guns of Siksika also scored, and now has a team leading 13 points in 17 games.

Hammond sparks Raiders offense

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter After losing to the CNHA Blazers 3-1 the night before, the Rockyview Raiders prevailed against MLAC Elite Sportswear on Dec. 8 in Chesteremere, by a score of 5-1, led by Strathmores Kody Hammond, who scored a hat-trick. He had three goals on three shots, Todd Virostek said, Raiders team manager. Kody Hammond had a great game. Other Strathmore players contributed to the teams victory as well; Chris Rebeyka had two assists, and Brad Hendricks helped with another. Siksikas Trygve Many Guns scored a goal, to add to his team-leading 13 points. All the kids are kind of our leaders there, Virostek said. Trygve has great hands, big body just a really dominant player when he wants to be. Rockyview was outshot 31-23 but had strong goaltending from Hunter Virostek, who has a .894 save percentage and 3.11 goals against average on the season. I thought it was good, the kids played really well, Virostek said. Our goalie played well. Our penalties all the way through are fairly consistent with everybody else. We have a tough time on the powerplay and the penalty kill; special teams we really have to work on, thats the biggest thing. The Raiders scored two powerplay markers, and though suffering through 18 minutes in penalties, only had one powerplay goal scored against them. Our goals against average is just over three, and our goals for is just under three. So if we can just make one more save and get one more goal, that could be all the difference. Were really close, Virostek said. The Raiders will be assisting with the UFA Bisons VIP event for kids with special needs, during the Bisons home game on Dec. 13. Its huge for all of our players to get involved in the community and help out where they can, Virostek said. Rockyview plays the next night against the AC Avalanche in Chestermere.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our Son Devon Scott Belley at the age of 29 years near Carsland, Alberta. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his parents Wendy and Colin Gateman; His dad Darcy Belley; His siblings Chelsea, Branden (Courtney) and Alicia; His grandparents Bill (Helene) Purves, Darrell Tarasoff, Vic ( Judy) Gateman, Eileen Belley; His aunt Belinda Purves, special aunt Vicki; His uncles Dale ( Patty) Belley and Brent (Pilar) Gateman. He is predeceased by his grandma Jean Tarasoff and grandpa Guy Belley. Devon enjoyed studying geography, traveling, ames games, baseball, hockey, golf and football. A Celebration of Devons life was held on Wednesday, December 4th, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mossleigh Community Hall in Mossleigh, Alberta. In Lieu of owers memorial donations may be made in Devons memory to Heaven Can Wait Animal Rescue Foundation Box 9131, High River, Alberta, T1V 1P7.
