Clements Wins 1st Place Sweepstakes

19 TFA State Qualifications


The Clements Academic Speech Team earned the first place sweepstakes award at the Westside/Harmony Tournament December 6 and 7 where twenty-four schools competed. Of the seventeen students competing in individual events, six students advanced to the final rounds of extemporaneous speaking. Five students advanced to the final round of original oratory. Seventy-four students competed in debate and team members took the top speaker award in each division. In the championship division, team members placed first and third in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and second and third in public forum debate. In the novice division, the LD debate team totally eliminated all other competition by the first elimination round. Ten ninth grade students remained undefeated through all four preliminary rounds. Thus, they earned the first, second, and third place trophies. In public forum debate the novice division finished third. Another novice team member advanced to the final round of championship congressional debate. The team has now won its fourth sweepstakes award this semester. It received first at the Bellaire Tournament and second at Elkins and Katy-Taylor Tournaments. *Students must earn a total of 12 points in each event. Earning first place at a single tournament results in a maximum of 8 points. The number of state points awarded depends on the number of students competing in the event and placement in the elimination rounds. There is a scale for individual events, one for LD and PF debate, and another for congressional debate.

Of the 38 competitors in the novice division, ten students won all four preliminary rounds and prevented all non-Clements competitors from moving to a quarter final round of the top eight.
