IEFT Family,
It’s been 4 months since we shared with you the successes we had in the :irst year
of operation of Orkeeswa Secondary School. It’s not that we haven’t had anything
happening at the school since our last update ‐ we’ve just been too busy to write
about it. Very busy. Click here to view our new video.
Since April, we’ve had visits from surveyors from Engineers Without Borders, with Click here to view
whom we’ve partnered to bring more safe water to the school campus site, and a
IEFTʼs new video
volunteer group of Emergency Medical Technicians to provide health instruction.
We’ve installed solar panels and started after‐school clubs. We’ve planted fruit
trees and started raising chickens. We’ve said good‐bye to some of our
international volunteers and good friends from Ireland and the US and welcomed
in new volunteers from Adelaide, Australia and Del Rey Beach, Florida, USA.
However, our biggest accomplishment this year has been the continuation of building strong relationships with our
students, their families and the entire Lashaine community. In May, we announced to the village that we would be
accepting 40 more students for the next class at Orkeeswa to begin English‐immersion classes in September. Over 400
students showed up to sit for the entrance examination.
As we begin preparing for our next class of students with the need to purchase new uniforms and construct new desks
and chairs, please consider sponsoring a new student at Orkeeswa Secondary School. For US$100 per month,
you are not just putting a child in a new school uniform, but providing a student with a quality, affordable education.

Thank you for all your continued support. This would not have been possible without YOU!

If you build it...
...they will come. In May, over 400 students arrived on
the Orkeeswa Secondary School campus in hopes of being
one of the “lucky ones” to attend secondary school for less
than US$25 per year. For almost every one of these
children, their families are unable to afford the US$400 that
it costs to join a government or
other private schools in
Tanzania. The 40
selected using an
IQ examination,
oral interview and
multiple visits to
the child’s home,
will begin classes
in September this
year.
TEAM AFRICA
Fourteen volunteers arrived in northern Tanzania
last month as part of TEAM AFRICA ‐ a group of
dedicated, trained Emergency Medical Technicians
(EMTs) working to assist projects in‐country with education
in the areas of :irst aid, reproductive education and health
topics. The group brought with them from the US over 100
pounds of school supplies, including new shoes for each
student donated by CROCS and Feed the Children, water
purifying tablets and school supplies. The Lashaine Village community celebrated
TEAM AFRICA's visit with a big party with over 300 villagers, where students
performed plays and sang Maasai songs, and the village's womens group danced
for the honored guests.
The Jean Donovan Summer Fellowship granted to undergraduate student applicants
attending Santa Clara University is designed to encourage and support students who desire
to deepen their understanding of social justice issues through a summer community‐based
learning experience.
Santa Clara University sophomore, Hilary Titus, was granted a Jean Donovan Summer
Fellowship and will be spending her 6‐week experience in Tanzania with IEFT's team by
working with students in the classroom, assisting the organization's of:ice staff and
promoting the importance of education in the rural villages in which IEFT works.
Former IEFT volunteer Of:ice Manager and Rotarian, Sharon Daishe, was
presented with the Paul Harris Fellow Award this past May by the Rotary Club of
Blacktown in Sydney, Australia. The distinguished award is given in appreciation
of tangible and signi:icant assistance given for the furtherance of better
understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world, and was given
for her 14‐month volunteer stint with IEFT. Congratulations, Sharon!
