PART-A
1. (a) Define specific fuel consumption of an I.C. engine and explain its importance.
(b) The brake thermal efficiency of an I..C. engine is 30%. The fuel used has a
calarific value of 40 MJ/kg. Find the specific fuel consumption. [6+10]
3. (a) Explain the advantages of the following equipment used in welding process:
i. Head shield
ii. Chrome leather spats
iii. Scratch brush
iv. Chrome leather apron
(b) Describe the working principle and operation of gas welding process. [8+8]
PART-B
1. A 6 pole d.c generator having a lap connected armature is required to give a terminal
voltage of 240 V when supplying an armature current of 400 A. The armature has

84 slots and is driven at 700 rpm. The resistance of the armature circuit is 0.03 Ω
and the useful flux per pole is 0.03 wb. Calculate the no. of conductors per slot
and the actual value of the useful flux per pole. [16]
2. From the fundamental, derive the expression for the Torque. [16]
3. Explain the applications of a transformer and derive an equation for induced emf
in a single phase transformer. [16]

PART-A
1. (a) What are the factors that impose limitations on the compression ratio used in
the petrol engines?
(b) List the relative merits and demerits of 2-stroke over 4-stroke engines? [6+10]
PART-B
2. A 250V, dc shunt motor on no-load runs at a speed of 1000 rpm and takes a current
of 5A. The armature and shunt field resistance are 0.2Ω and 250Ω respectively.
Calculate the speed when the motor is on-load and is taking a current of 50A. [16]
3. (a) State the various losses which take place in a transformer. On what factors
do they depend.
(b) A Single phase transformer has 100 primary and 1000 secondary turns. The
net cross sectional area of the core is 60 square centimeters. If the primary
winding is connected to a 50 HZ supply at 520 volts.
Calculate the
i. the peak value of flux density in the core

5. (a) Explain the general constructional features of Permanent Magnet Moving Coil
instruments.

1. (a) What do you mean by the term ‘scavenging’ in an I.C. Engine? Explain.
(b) A 4-stroke SI engine develops 37.5 Kw at 90% mechanical efficiency. The
specific fuel consumption is 0.4kg /kwh. The air fuel ratio used is 15:1.Taking
the calorific value of fuel as 40 MJ/kg find
i. IP and FP
ii. Indicated and brake thermal efficiencies. [6+10]
3. (a) Describe the typical equipment used by welder in the are welding process.
(b) With the neat sketch of describe briefly about oxyacetylene torch. [8+8]
4. (a) What are the different lathe accessories and attachments? Gives their uses.
(b) Draw the line diagram of a vertical drilling machine and label the important
parts and explain the function of each part. [8+8]

3. Draw the general schematic of a single phase transformer and explain its working
principle. [16]

5. A moving coil instrument gives full-scale deflection with 20 mA. The resistance of
the coil is 4ΩW. It is desired to convert this instrument into an ammeter to read
up to 2 A. Find the resistance of the shunt to be connected in parallel with the
instrument. Also determine the value of series resistance for the above instrument
to read up to a voltage of 30 V. [8+8]
