LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE Your Name: Lauren Krieger Title of Lesson: Malnutrition Grade: 6th grade STANDARDS CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6.

1d Review the key ideas expressed and demonstrate understanding of multiple perspectives through reflection and paraphrasing. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6.5 Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, images, music, sound) and visual displays in presentations to clarify information. LESSON SUMMARY/OVERVIEW During this lesson, students should become familiar with not only the US, but also other parts of the world and how they are dealing with Malnutrition. Explain to them the meaning of Malnutrition and make them understand that this happens all over the world, not just in developing countries. After touching base on the growing issue, have them take a short true/false quiz to see what they already know. Most students are shocked at how little they know about this growing issue. Students then will fill in a cause/solution chart on what they think will help malnutrition. Then focus this lesson in on South Sudan, and how they are struggling with this issue. Break the students up into separate groups and have them discuss what they found interesting in this lesson they didn't already know and also review their cause/solution chart. They will bring all their ideas together and create a cause/solution chart as a whole group. Go around the class and have each group stand up and discuss with the class what their group came up with and share their cause/solution chart. This is a fun activity to get the class engaged with one another and learn more about malnutrition. OBJECTIVES Students will become familiar with the meaning of Malnutrition. Students will engage in a true/false quiz independently Students will watch a video on South Sudan and learn more about their lifestyles. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION The students will complete a true/false quiz and conducts a cause/solution chart to demonstrate there understand of Malnutrition. Both cause/solution chart and true /false are located at the bottom of this lesson plan. PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE Students will need to be educated on Malnutrition before working on these activities. The teacher will review with them what the meaning of malnutrition is and ensure they understand the material. Most of this lesson is group based, allowing them to come together and make accurate observations. Malnutrition-Is the condition that results from eating a diet in which certain nutrients are lacking, in excess (too high in intake) or in the wrong proportions. South Sudan-A landlocked country in NE Africa, independent since 2011. Capital is Juba. Bad nourishment-Not getting the right kind of nourishment in an everyday diet. TEACHING PROCEDURES Explain the meaning of Malnutrition to the students with a mini presentation. First ask the students what they think it means, and once they answer write on the board the definition of all three key words so they can write them down in their notebooks. After the students show that they understand, have them take the true/false quiz independently and quietly. Give the students 8-10 minutes to complete this quiz. Once the students finish the quiz, go over the answers with the class and have them ask any questions they may have about the topic. I will then handout the cause & solution chart and have the students fill it in independently. Give the students 15-20 minutes to fill out their cause & solution worksheets. This can be found on YouTube or by this URL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma8QkilmTIs (Start at :15) Break the students up into separate group after the video and have them discuss the cause/solution chart and the true/false quiz with one another. Then handout a poster board and have the students create a big cause & solution chart which all of their ideas put together. I want the students to discuss what they found interesting and what they think some good cause & solutions are that they could share with the rest of the class. When the students finish, go around the room and pick on separate groups to present their poster boards. To make sure the students understand what is expected of them, write, cause and solution on the board cause being on the left and solution being on the right. Add bullet points so the students arent confused what is expected of them. RESOURCES

N/A WAYS OF THINKING CONNECTION This lesson plan connects to Futures thinking which is described as an interdisciplinary collection of methods, theories, and findings (Miller, 2003, p.7) that helps people to think constructively about the future. This is used in the lesson plan by having the students reflect back on their life today, and how it can impact not only their future, but as well as everyone around them. They can begin to look at how their eating habits are now and constantly remind themselves of getting a healthy balanced diet. Futures thinking begins on Day 1, having them write down what they ate. Giving them easy steps such as meatless Mondays, will help them begin to be healthy and on the right track for their future.

True/False Quiz
Direction: Answer the following questions below to your best ability. This is graded on completion not accuracy; we will review the answers as a class. Circle true or false for the following questions. 1.) African Countries have the highest level of Malnutrition.

True or False
2.) There isnt enough food in the world to feed everyone. True or False 3.) Malnutrition can make people, especially children, more vulnerable to illnesses and infection. True or False 4.) One in eight people go hungry every day. True or False 5.) Malnutrition is only something that happens in developing countries True or False

Answer Key
1.) True: According to the World Health Organization, Chad, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Mozambique all have rates of malnutrition above 35 per cent. That is, more than one in three people in these countries is malnourished.

2.) False: There is enough food in the world to feed everyone. Yet one billion people go to bed hungry every night and over two million children die from malnutrition each year. A combination of poverty, natural disasters, climate change, conflict, land use and farming practices, and economic crisis has contributed to increasing levels of hunger and malnutrition.

3.) True: Malnutrition can make people more vulnerable to certain illnesses, such as tuberculosis (TB) while some illnesses (HIV, for instance) can also cause malnutrition.

4.) True: Of the 7 billion people in the world, 870 million are hungry. This is equivalent to the population of North America and Europe combined. They do not get enough food to be healthy

and lead an active life. Hunger and malnutrition are the number one risk to health worldwide.

5.) False: According to a report published in 2009, 3 million people in the UK are either malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. This is sometimes referred to as over -nourished
