Brochure
Learning To Fly
Description: Two-sided, folding brochure Date: December 13, 2013 Course & Instructor: Comm 130.3, Julie Peterson Programs used: Adobe InDesign Adobe Photoshop Adobe Illustrator Objectives: Learn to set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo. Learn to integrate text and images. Reinforce clear, concise & compelling writing. Practice full bleed, duplex printing. Process: The most important part of the process was doing this project on paper first to make sense of folds and cuts on both sides of the layout. It was also vital to understand where the edges of the full-bleed printing would land. I revised the design several times and settled on a trifold layout with a simple rounded corner cut out. I spent the most time working in InDesign. Guides and rulers were life-savers. I used a fair amount of transparency and feather gradient. I also used the corner options dialogue box and text wrap palette. I used the rounded corners as a repeating element to unify all the panels. I also used two shades of blue. The one for backgrounds matched the sky, and the one for text was darker to help it be readable. I created vector graphicsall silhouettes, and made a vector clipping mask for the cliff so it would match the style. I took the photos of Jake and Cesar myself, and did some minor retouching.

Logos
Nerds United
Description: Three logo options for the same organization Date: November 1, 2013 Course & Instructor: Comm 130.3, Julie Peterson Programs used: Adobe Illustrator Objectives: Apply the design & typography principles Create a variety of original logos to convey an organizations purpose. Reinforce Adobe Illustrator vector graphic skills. Present logos in a professional manner. Conduct branding/market research for data-based decision making. Process: 1. Understand project parameters, client needs, and target audience: Before I did anything else, I defined the purpose of the organization I was designing for. It was an event planning company that specialized in bringing likeminded nerds together. It values nerdiness as passion for any given topic, even those marginalized by society as a whole. 2. Explore and create solutions: I did a lot of brainstorming. As I did so, ideas emerged and gradually became more and more visually clear. 3. Critique and refine drafts: For this project, I conducted a number of online polls using Poll Daddy, a plug-in for Wordpress. The feedback was excellent and helped me refine my solutions. Mastering the pen tool and pathfinder pallet in Adobe Illustrator allowed for clear visual representation of the concept of uniting individuals.

T-Shirt
Hibbard 1st Ward Girls Camp 2013: iStand
Description: Two sided, one color T-shirt design for Christian girls camp Date: July 2013 Course & Instructor: Joel Judkins (real-world bonus project) Programs used: Adobe Illustrator Objectives: Create a fun, bold T-shirt design Convey the theme I Stand and the sub-themes: 1) the young women in this youth group are incredible. 2) they stand all amazed at the love Jesus offers them 3) they stand in holy places 4) they serve, testify, aspire, nurture and dream. Process: I met with the youth camp leaders and helped them verbalize their themes and objectives so I could clearly understand the message. We brainstormed iconic/pop image ideas together, ideas the young women could immediately make a connection to. Apple products, the Icredibles and the 2013 LDS mutual theme were among the concepts that came out of our discussion. I created the vector-based designs in Adobe Illustrator, using mostly the pen tool and pathfinder pallets. Two of the young ladies from the camp sat on either side of me giving me live feedback as I created the designs what they liked and didnt like. It was truly a group effort and evolved into something that the girls were pleased with. One young lady commented that, unlike most girls camp T-shirts, she planned on actually wearing this one after camp was over.

Description: Business card with original logo for stationery set Date: November 6, 2013 Course & Instructor: Comm 130.3, Julie Peterson Programs used: Adobe Illustrator Adobe InDesign Objectives: Apply the design & typography principles Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Create a logo to fit a companys image. Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Learn to keep thing visually clean and simple. Process: I started by researching the company and brainstorming ideas. Next, I created a logo using Adobe Illustrator. I experimented with a variety of layouts for the logo and contact information on the letterhead and business cards. I printed and took my first draft to class to get feedback from other students. They said the background symbol on the card was too subtle and that there was too much space between the name and contact info on the letterhead. One person in the group suggested I try a more horizontal placement of info on the letterhead, another said she liked the strong vertical alignment. I re-worked those things and added a texture on the letterhead.

Heal Your Heart Brownies
Description: Web page to showcase original logo Date: November 21, 2013 Course & Instructor: Comm 130.3, Julie Peterson Programs used: Adobe Illustrator Adobe Dreamweaver & Text Wrangler Objectives: Apply the design & typography principles Size and optimize an original logo for a web page. Practice clear, concise and compelling writing by describing the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. Process: For this project, we were given a plain text document and style sheet. We added HTML to the content document and customized the CSS to create the web page. I enjoyed the right-brain challenge of organizing content visually/creatively mixed with the left-brain challenge of doing so with logic/code. I used the CSS3 border-radius property to make the <body> element rounded. I also added multiple borders with the boxshadow property. I customized the colors of the page to match colors of the logo. I made my page semi-responsive, but havent added media queries for multiple screen sizes. The primary vector tools I used for the logos were pen and pathfinder. The artboard tool also helped with cropping/sizing the logos. I also modified my Heal Your Heart Brownies logo to include the word Heart based on feedback from James Richards in class.

Flier
Vouant Leadership Conference for Graduating Seniors
Description: Black & White Communication Conference Flier Date: October 2, 2013 Course / Instructor: Comm 130, section 3 Julie Peterson, Programs used: Adobe InDesign Adobe Photoshop Adobe Illustrator Objectives: Apply the design & typography principles Reinforce InDesign layout skills Reinforce InDesign file management & links skills Process: The first step was to researching the audience, client objectives and message. This helped me aim for a professional look, and content that could be read quickly. Next was editing. It took a while to boil the message down to the essentials and rearrange it. I cleaned up and vectorized the logo so I could use it on a dark or a light background. I did some minimal touch up work on the photo because it was too dark when printed. I put together a draft version of the project, doing my best to make it professional and unique. I focused on strong alignments, grouping related content (proximity), keeping fonts and styles consistent (repetition), and using contrast to create a page hierarchy and visual interest. The flow needed to visually take the reader through the hierarchy and keep his/her eyes on the page. It was a challenge fitting everything in, but I felt good about the results. I received great feedback from the my peers, and went back to the drawing board. I think the final project turned out excellent.

Event Ad
Willie Nelson Benefit Concert: On The Road Again
Description: A color full-bleed event ad created entirely with Microsoft Word and a scanner Date: October 11, 2013 Course & Instructor: Comm 130.3, Julie Peterson Programs/Tools used: Scanner software and Scanner Microsoft Word Objectives: Apply the design & typography principles Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design Learn to use Microsoft Word for times when nothing else is available. Process: I wanted a cause that I could feel strongly about. I found the Jessie Rees Foundation, an organization inspired by a 12-year-old girl who inspired and gave hope to millions before dying of cancer. The foundation named after her continues to encourage and give hope to children with cancer. Chick-fil-A is already a proud sponsor. I decided to throw BYUIdaho in there since they were providing the venue. Of course the event was fabricated, based mostly on the fact that after looking through lots of magazines, the photo of Willy Nelson was one of the best images I could find. With those decisions made, I began to brainstorm ideas. It was tricky working around the limitations of an image I had to crop out of necessity because there were words on the image that would work on the event ad. Working with Microsoft Word was a unique challenge. It can do a lot more than I thought it could, but takes a lot longer and is difficult to control.

Montage
Doubt Your Doubts Before You Doubt Your Faith
Description: An inspirational montage created by blending two or more images and typography Date: October 23, 2013 Course & Instructor: Comm 130.3, Julie Peterson Programs used: Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Reinforce Photoshop best practices (layers, non-destructive Photshopping, masks) Apply principles of design and typography. Reinforce image quality/resolution principles. Process: I decided on a quote and brainstormed several different ideas for how to portray it. I gathered images and placed them on layers in Adobe Photoshop. I blended the layers using masks, and added the text. I experimented with different configurations of the words, trying to get the emphasis correct. We were required to use a filter, so I used Gaussian blur on several layers of text. I also used a lens flare filter on the blue sky. I created a poll to get feedback, posted it on Facebook and Twitter and waited for the results to come in. The comments were very helpful, along with the poll result. I printed a draft version and took it to class. Based on the feedback I received, I determined what worked well and what I should tweak. In particular, the alignment of the text could be strengthened and more white space could be created. I made the final adjustments and ended up with a poster that Sister Peterson wants on her wall.

Imaging
David and Daisy at the Window
Description: An original photograph that has been edited/formatted Date: October 17, 2013 Course & Instructor: Comm 130.3, Julie Peterson Programs used: Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Apply the design & typography principles Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image. Learn to size and crop an image and apply knowledge of resolution. Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Learn to use selection tools to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. Process: I am not a photographer, but checked out a camera and spent some time in my office figuring out how to use it. It was a bit overwhelming, but enjoyable, nonetheless. After taking many photos, I looked through them and decided on Daisy and David at the Window. I used lots of layers and masks to desaturate and motion blur ugly water spots on the windrow. I also cropped the image, added some vignetting and moved the image up so the statue wasnt tangenting with the bottom of the frame. I gave the daisy a yellow center, toned down the red of its pot and got rid of a BYU-I sticker that is on the window. I used several adjustment layers: vibrance, hue & saturation, levels. Design principles work with photography. You can add contrast with light and dark, align subjects along rule-of-thirds, use proximity to make sure that related things are visually grouped and that there is sufficient white space, and help unify a photos theme with repetition. All of these principles work together to create good flow.
