Fortuna, C EDUC 1070- Personal Framework Paper As times change so do the educational standards and how much technology is integrated in the ways we teach. As teachers there are many advantages to using technology in the classroom but we must consider the whole fact there can also be many problems that come with the uses as well. So many issues can arrive such as social, educational, cultural/equity and legal/ethical. These issues arent new they have been around for almost a s long as teaching has been around but now they have reached to a different extent. This can be seen through the works of Albert Bandura, and Lev Vygotsky. Social issues will always arise with the use of technology in the classroom. These issues are: quality of life concerns, fears about technology overuses and misuses, and risks of online social networking (M.D. Roblyer, Aaron H. Doering, 2000, p. 14) One of the concerns is the quality of life, and how teachers have to teach students how to protect their information, as well as how to set it to private. If students are uninformed or misinformed then the information they may post can be unprotected and leaked to the wrong person. There are also fears about technology misuses, and overuses in technology like the social impact of computers in society and the culture. Teachers must stress the balance between technology-based instructions with other activities because today the students often know more about technology then the teacher does himself/herself. The students also must be informed about the dangers of posts on social networking sites, risqu text messages, sharing of emails without permission, etc. Jeff Cains (2008) study found the following: Students have been suspended or expelled from respective universities for threats of crime and for racially insensitive remarks posted on Facebook. Other students have been reported or disciplined for alcohol/drug violations that were discovered through

Fortuna, C EDUC 1070- Personal Framework Paper Facebook postings. Facebook has been used in investigations of campus brawls16 and for identifying students who illegally stormed a football field. Students have been expelled from class, called before the dean of students, lost positions on the school newspaper staff, and even investigated by the Secret Service, all because of ill-advised postings on Facebook. (para. 9). This leads to the major risks of social networking cites, and the best thing that is possible to learn what the districts policies are and follow them. But a teacher also must keep his/her eyes peeled to spot online bullying before it gets too out of hand. Lev Vygotsky stated that learning is influenced by culture and the differences each person has (Roblyer, 2000, p. 42). So, integrating technology in the classrooms is bound to have an effect in the students culture. Another big category is the educational issues the major issues within this category being the lack of funding for technology (Roblyer, 2000, p. 14). Some schools have all the funding they need for whatever technology they may need but other schools arent as fortunate. Without adequate hardware and software, there is little opportunity for teachers to integrate technology into the curriculum. Even in cases where technology is abundant, there is no guarantee that teachers have easy access to these resources (Khe Foon Hew, T. Bush, 2006, p. 226). Teachers must be able to advocate to their schools, and their districts that whether their school needs the funding to get the technology or getting the access to the programs they may need. According to Roblyer (2000) some of the problems that must be addressed in the cultural/equity issues category are racial and gender equality, as well as incorporating students with special needs (14). Albert Bandura explained that learning is an activity that results in interactions within the environment, behaviors, and other student factors (Roblyer, 2000, p. 42).

The best thing as teachers we can do is use the technology to incorporate these students to help them make progress in their education. M.Jones Alt., M. E., Bausch, &, E. M. McLaren (2013) state, Most teachers (53%) reported having access to technology as a strength of their district. Teachers described how their districts obtained the AT equipment the students needed, that teachers served as an advocate for their students in obtaining devices, and that equipment was available through a lending library (p. 20). So it should be possible for every teacher to get access to the technology needed for each student. The last major set of issues is the legal/ethical issues (Roblyer, 2000, p. 14). I believe the ones that affect the incorporation of education are the safety issues that arise, and the new possibilities for plagiarism. As a teacher online safety procedures must be put up for all students to see at all times so they remain safe, but the teacher must also enforce these procedures as well. And, plagiarism issues also may arise but through making the students sign a policy that states what will happen if caught plagiarizing and using programs such as SafeAssign this will always be a controversial issue. Plagiarism should be viewed on a continuum, ranging from blatant and unacceptable to incidental and trivial. It is important that the profession clarifies what constitutes unacceptable actions and what sanctions are appropriate. In doing so, the use of the works and ideas of others can be explored in a spirit of inquiry rather than shrouded in mystery within a culture of fear (L. Evering, & G. Moorman, 2012, p.41). The social issues surrounding technology affect me majorly since I am planning to be a secondary education history teacher. Students can be cruel to each other and with technology it is even more possible to be cruel, even during school hours. No matter how many Internet blocks are placed there are always ways around them, the number one way is Internet usage on cellular

Fortuna, C EDUC 1070- Personal Framework Paper phones. But as a teacher all I can do is keep my students informed, and make sure they are monitored to the best extent I can. But I also will try my hardest to make it possible to get access to the programs my students are going to need to have a successful up-to-date education, no matter how hard that may be. This includes getting the technology to make things equal for all types of students regardless of their gender, race or learning abilities. And, I will make sure the students know all the policies and expectations for the uses of technology are clearly known, posted, and reiterated. I pledge I will make sure I correctly incorporate technology into my classroom for the rest of my educational career, whether that may be as a student or a teacher.
