Hi and welcome to the first H&A edition of the Fantasy Freako's rave for 2013. In what was an
indifferent start of the year, several subpar performances kept scores well down, but in saying that
regular protagonists Dane Swan and Gary Ablett were sensational as always - returning decent
numbers for coaches that had them as captain.
In this week's focus I will dissect the art of 'sideways trading' and discuss its relevance in 2013.
Also, the green alerts are retained and will be a feature across the season, providing you with the
additional data you need to make those tough trade calls. The top 10% players for points per minute
(PPM), $ per point ($PP) and average points scored will be highlighted each week, so keep a close eye
on them. A player's overall competition ranking has also be added to the tables as a reference guide.

Below is a list of players that could be deemed liabilities after their Round 1 performance and if you are the
adventuress type, a move sideways has to be considered.
GCS
Although trading sideways for fixtures is deemed risky, I floated the idea in my most recent rave and I still believe
that it is a viable option. Leigh Montagna is one example of this. He returns this week against Richmond after
missing the season opener through suspension and his record against the Tigers is impressive, averaging 113 points
in his past four outings. Looking ahead to Round 3 he comes up against the Giants, a team he amassed 128 points
against in Round 22 last season while the following week he faces the Bombers, a team he has averaged 107 points
against in his past four. This is just one example of an effective sideways fixture trade.
GEEL
As a rookie in 2012 Greene was a relative unknown and his scores reflected this, racking up some massive numbers
along the way. If last week's match against Sydney is any indication, he won't be given the same freedom this year.
The Swans used Ryan O'Keefe as a run-with player on him, restricting him to a career-low 37 points - 13 shy of his
previous worst return. He'll have Kane Cornes to contend with this week. Jones on the other hand was poor against
Port Adelaide as was the entire Melbourne side, finishing with only 62 points - his second-worst return since 2011.

SIDEWAYS TR ADING - EMBR ACE IT!

Making a sideways trade in years gone by has been forbidden, but in 2013 this could be our saviour. The fear of it
backfiring has seen us carry players unnecessarily, but with a change to the trading system this year we now have
a tempting 'get out' clause. With two trades up our sleeve every week we can ditch the underperforming/suspended
players and bring in those that are in good form. In saying this though I wouldn't be pulling the trigger this early on
a Patrick Dangerfield or Harley Bennell after their dismal Round 1 returns. Ignoring the inevitable price drop, they
are unlikely to have too many shockers so trading them out this week would be foolish. However, if you took a punt
on a Nathan Jones or Toby Greene then a sideways move is an option given they were riskier picks.

Below is a list of taggers across the board with their likely opponents for the next two rounds included as a reference
guide.

Nick Lower was another player to impose himself defensively, keeping Michael Tuck Medallist Daniel Rich to 8
disposals. Rich had to wait until the 28th minute of the first term to earn his first disposal which was courtesy of a
free kick. Brendan McCartney has earmarked Lower for this role and it was evident throughout the NAB Cup, with
his blanketing role on Trent Cotchin at Visy Park a sign of things to come.
COLL
In Round 1 they were at it again and we didn't have to wait long for our first victim - Patrick Dangerfield. After
racking up eight disposals in the first term against the Bombers James Hird sent his best run-with player Heath
Hocking to him and the results were immediate. In the 41 minutes they were matched up on one another,
Dangerfield could only manage four disposals. The following night it was Ryan Crowley that did a number on Luke
Shuey - keeping him to 10 disposals from the 90 minutes they were matched up.
CARL
What would a fantasy season be without a feature on those pesky taggers? Our view on them will differ depending on
what side of the fence we're sitting on. If they nullify one of our players then they are seen as the enemy, however, if
they blanket one of our opponent's players then we're gleaming with joy. In my view they will always be the enemy.
