PRE-SEASON REVIEW 2013 CHAMPION/DATA/ISSUE 2

ADEL

BRIS

Hi and welcome to the second edition of the Fantasy Freako's pre-season rave for 2013. With only one more week of NAB Cup/Pre-Season games to come, there are still plenty of unknowns as we look at finalising our squads, especially in the rookie department. Jack Viney hasn't played in Melbourne's last two games and Kane Mitchell had a stinker last week - finishing with only three disposals. With squad sizes reduced back to 22 this week, it's vital that we monitor the final teams. In this week's

Enjoy this week's read and best of the luck for the coming year.

focus I'll be identifying the best valued picks so far in the NAB Cup as well as giving you the top-three scorers per 100 minutes at each club in the team pages.

VALUE FOR YOUR DOLLAR

ESS

At this time of the year it's all about getting value for your dollar and as always the best place to start is with the basement price rookies. With the majority of coaches adopting the 'guns-rookies' strategy yet again, nailing the cash cows from Round 1 is paramount. As the measuring stick I've calculated the NAB value for every player in the competition (minimum 120 minutes game time) which will give us a rough guide as to which player has been the best performer so far based on their price. This figure takes the players price and then divides it by the average points per 100 minutes game time.

After crunching the numbers the best performer so far is Collingwood rookie Kyle Martin. A mature-age recruit, he will need to be upgraded to the senior list before he can be considered, but given the strength of the Magpies' midfield he may only be an impact player anyway (green vest). He has attended the second-most centre bounces of any player at the club behind Dane Swan and ranks second for points scored per 100 minutes behind Steele Sidebottom.

Of those eligible to play from Round 1 it's Daniel Currie that has stolen the limelight. As good as he was last week against Geelong though I would be very surprised if he ousted Todd Goldstein and became the No.1 ruckman. Up against Mark Blicavs and Josh Walker, he finished with 11 disposals, 38 hitouts and 77 points which was a decent return. His fantasy worth this season is still to be decided, as coach Brad Scott continues to weigh up whether to go with two genuine ruckmen or just the one, with Drew Petrie the most likely to provide the relief. Whichever way he goes, Currie is a super bench option.

Below are the top 20 performers so far. In the team profiles I have identified the top-three value picks at each club.

MID-PRICED ALTERNATIVES

I'm sure that I'm not the only coach that has struggled to find rookies for the forward line. With only a handful of worthy options so far, we may have to look to the mid-priced player instead, as he is at least guaranteed game time compared to the speculative rookie pick. To assist you in this process, I've taken the liberty of identifying the best performed forwards priced between $200-$300k (minimum 120 minutes game time) so far in the NAB Cup, using points per 100 minutes as the measure. Below are the options.

Brisbane's Patrick Karnezis heads the list, averaging 124 points per 100 minutes - the most of any forward in the league that has played in more than one game. He has been the biggest bolter so far, but if we look at his NEAFL numbers from last season it's not that surprising. He dominated in a midfield role in his 13 games, averaging 28 disposals, seven marks, four tackles, two goals and 115 points per match. When he was given a chance in the AFL he struggled to have an impact in a forward role, averaging only eight disposals and 46 points per match. A breakout year is definitely on the cards so make sure you don't miss out.

Another player that has put his hand up is West Coast's Josh Kennedy. It was great to see him back to his best last week against Port Adelaide, booting 5.3 and at his price he's ridiculously cheap. As the No.1 target inside 50 he should record plenty of marks and impact the scoreboard on a regular basis. Strongly consider him for your forward line.

Other players to keep on your radar include Kieran Harper, Billy Smedts and Joshua Green - all youngsters that should improve this season.

The ability to make two trades per week makes it easier to pick players such as
Michael Hibberd. Prone to the odd soft tissue injury, he ranks third at the Bombers for
total points scored.

Nathan Fyfe’s dodgy shoulder is the only thing holding him back. He suffered a
scare last week against the Bulldogs on his way to a game-high 107 points.
