I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the session, the students must be able to: 1.

recognize elements and compounds in daily life; and 2. identify some elements and compounds used in industries which are vital to our national economy. II. SUBJECT MATTER A. TOPIC: Elements and Compounds in Daily Life B. References: 1. PSSLC Unit II, 2.1 & 2.2 2. Department of Education, Culture and 2. Sports (1991). Science and Technology III. Recall Recall the different elements and compounds discussed so far. Write the elements and compounds mentioned by the students on the board. C. Motivation Explain to them that some of the elements and compounds listed are important in industry and some are found important in the human body. D. Lesson Proper Discuss first with the students the most common elements and compounds used in industry and those found in the human body. Examples of common elements and compounds are calcium, iron, oxygen, chlorine, etc. Proceed on explaining the other important elements and compounds using the visual aids. E. Generalization 1. Elements and compounds make up the earth. Man utilizes them to improve his mode of living. 2. Some important elements and compounds in industry are as follows: a. oxygen element which supports plant and animal life - used in torches for welding platinum and quartz as well as fusing aluminum oxide to make artificial rubies - used in cutting apart steel rails and automobiles b. hydrogen - lightest element - used to extract and purify metals - used for oxyhydrogen torch - used in making ammonia c. nitrogen - most abundant element in the atmosphere - used with argon for filling electric lamps - used in making ammonia, nitric acid and other nitrogen compounds d. carbon - element which occurs in all living things - present in tissues of our bodies as well as in food - widely used in industry as a purifier - used as fuel in industrial plants

e. iron - most important metallic element in industry f. ammonia - compound of nitrogen and hydrogen - raw material in making fertilizers - used as a refrigerant and is a component f commercial glass and porcelain cleaners g. nitric acid - compound of hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen - made to react with coal tar to form nitrogen compounds that are used in making dyes - with sulfuric acid, it is added to cotton to make plastics for photographic films h. calcium carbonate - widely distributed over the earths surface as marble, limestone, gypsum and other minerals - used in making glass - serves as a fusing agent in making steel - source of carbon dioxide for dry ice and is a major component of cement i. sodium hydroxide - compound of sodium, oxygen and hydrogen - major raw material for soap making - used in production of rayon and cellulose film, in petroleum refining and in the production of paper IV. EVALUATION Identify the element or compound being described by each of the following statements. 1. This compound is used in LPG. 2. This element is used to fill up balloons and also the main component of the star. 3. This element is used in lamp filament. 4. This important element is found in coal and diamond. 5. This gaseous element is used in advertising sign because of its attractive red color. 6. This compound is the product of photosynthesis and is used in making candies. 7. This element is the only liquid metal and is found in thermometer. V. ASSIGNMENT What are the 2 components of a solution?
