White Collar Workers White-collar workers or non-manual workers form distinct social group characterised by divergent socioeconomic backgrounds, levels of education, and manner of speech, social customs and ideology. The white-collar employee is usually involved in a desk job or providing services over the counter. The members of these groups usually seem more inclined towards management than blue-collar employees. It is found that white-collar unionism is e panding. Their strong points are a large membership, sound finance, and internal leadership. !f the "# million white-collar employees, #.# million are unioni$ed and nearly there are #%%& trade unions of white-collar employees.

The reasons for formation of these unions are as under5 !fficers2 perception that workers have been able to protect their interests better than officers because they are organi$ed. The decline in relative disparity in wages of workers and officers in public sector. The feeling that there is concern for workers2 participation in management but not the managers2 participation in management. The high-handed behaviour of subordinates towards officers, particularly towards those who come into direct contact with workers. The nature and style of management, the unilateral decisions with regard to officers interest. Continued indifference to their grievances has resulted in a feeling of relative deprivation among officers. 'anagerial ,esponse to 'anagers2 /nions 3reedom of association is fundamental right under the Indian Constitution and hence cannot be denied to the managers.

*enerally the government and management are antagonistic and hostile to officers24managerial unions.
