Taylor Sanders 11/24/13 Annotated Bibliography Draft Some Sources Become Permanent The popularity of tattoos has been on the rise for the last decade. Many magazines, artists, collectors and health officials have spent a lot of time redirecting their attention to the business of permanent ink. There are many factors in the tattoo industry that are being brought to light with the steady rise of people collecting them, causing a sudden change in the way a once taboo tradition is seen in our society today. Im interested in exploring all the realms of the tattooing industry before perusing my dream to eventually own a tattoo parlor. Aitchison, Guy. Ask Guy. Tattoo Magazine. 01 Oct 2013: 14-15. Print. Ask Guy is a section in Tattoo Magazine that allows readers to ask questions related to tattoos. The answers are then sought out from people that have enough credentials to be an expert in that specific field. This particular edition of Ask Guy discussed the need for laser treatment when doing a cover-up of an old, unattractive tattoo. An artist specialized in cover up tattoos went through the steps of a successful cover up. He stated that the darkness of the ink is the clearest indicator if laser treatment is necessary. If the original tattoo is so dark and the new image to be placed has a totally different dynamic, laser treatment is highly recommended. In most cases, a cover up is fixable. One thing was made very clear by the artist, the second time around for a tattoo has to be done correctly or the chance of repairing the damage done will most likely be unsuccessful.

The pathos of this article had a tone of importance. The dialog seemed very serious and something that a reader would truly want to consider if the option of a cover up is in their future. The images displayed helped get a better idea of what the tattoo artist was talking about in regards to the dynamics of the original art work and that of the image that will cover it up. The logos of this article were based mainly on common sense factors. Learning about the techniques of cover ups was very beneficial. I did not consider laser treatment as being a means of doing a successful cover up. The idea of laser tattoo removal is to remove the tattoo but the option of a cover up allows less treatment needed and provides an improved and better product rather taking away the tattoo all together. This technique allows the collector to keep their tattoo but transform it into something worth being proud of displaying. I believe this knowledge is very critical for tattoo parlors. Understanding these cover up concepts allows a tattoo business to provide closure for people who have had work done with the expectation of their ink being something worth having on their body for the rest of their lives and have had to live with the disappointment of not having that since the designed was carved into their skin permanently. Celano, Mark. Why Do People Get Tattoos and How Do. Graduate School News and Events. Yale University, 2013. Web. 24 Nov. 2013. Mark Celano (psychology) is conducting a study at Yale University about the psychological purpose people have behind body modifications such as tattooing, body piercing, and scarification. In his study he has found that 14-36% of adolescents and adults have undergone one of the three body modifications he studies. His goal is to find a connection between an individuals life experiences and the urge that leads that person to display images upon their

body to symbolize or signify their life tribulations, regardless of the social stigmata that are associated with the choice of altering ones body that is visible to the general public. The statistics given to this Web Blog entitled Why Do People Get Tattoos and How Do They Impact Interpersonal Relationships? is about research done by Celano. The logos provided to the reader are built on the assumption that the reader agrees with the numbers being presented from Celanos research. Most of the information provided was to inform the reader of the upcoming study Celano will conduct about the relation between people and why they get tattoos in places visible by society. This is where ethos starts to play a role in this Web Blog about Mark Celano. Celano is quoted stating that body modification is a reflection of mental illness, past life trials and tribulations, and have a positive effect on the healing of these things in ones life. I started questioning the reliability of the Web blog about permanent tattoos when I was reading statistics only from Celanos research and none other. I feel as though more research should have been cited to ensure the readers satisfaction about the statistics of tattoos in the last two decades. I also felt that the opinion of tattoos was presented as fact. Not all people get tattoos to symbolize a past event, and not all people who have experienced trauma have tattoos. Stating these opinions as fact presented a warning sign for me when reading about the research Celano will conduct at Yale University regarding why people publicly display tattoos. This research may end up only appealing to individuals who can relate or so was presented in the way the Web Blog was written. This may be because it was a Web Blog designed to highlight Mark Celano rather his research on the psychology of tattoos, however I was under the impression by the title it was written for that purpose.

FDA, Tattoos and Permanent Makeup. Cosmetics. www.fda.org. N.P., 05 Jun 2013. Web. 28 Oct 2013. There is a section on the FDA website for tattoos and permanent makeup. In this section the FDA express their concern for the health risks associated with ink being injected into skin. The article also illustrates the severe issues that could arise due to the lack of sterilization which could potentially lead to transmitted diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, and staph infection. Many inks used in tattooing are not approved to be injected into the skin and some are the same inks used in printers and automobile paint. The article went on further to explain the tedious and painful process of tattoo removal and constructed a general list of things to really consider before getting a tattoo. The purpose of this article was to inform the general public about the risks of tattoos and permanent makeup as well as sources to report allergic reactions and infection due to improper tattooing equipment and sterilization. This article may have been designed to present a logos rhetorical point of view but ethos was present in the way the information was presented. Much of this article was focused around the negative consequence of getting tattoos. I feel that this article would serve the reader much more effectively if a list of ways to protect themselves from the negative outcomes of getting tattoos was presented. The focus of so much negative facts about getting tattoos could really hinder the good information provided to the reader by creating a taboo image of getting tattoos in general, creating a possible animosity from the reader towards the selective information provided in the article. Gomez, Solo. Personal Interview. 08 Nov 2013

Sanders5

The Interview done with Solo Gomez was on the eighth of November 2013, in his tattoo Parlor called Versatile Ink in South Salt Lake, Utah. In this interview I learned of the different ways solo has had to use writing in his everyday experiences. I found out that once a month he writes to investors, every day he posts images through social networks to advertise his business, and daily emails are sent to employees in regards to shop goals and expectations. Gomez stressed the importance of advertising, location, and up to date equipment when it came to running a successful tattoo business. Gomez also made mention of learning the trade of tattoo removal and becoming aware of how that education could benefit his shop. When Gomez discussed advertisement, it was brought to my attention that he uses rhetorical perception every day. Gomez has to focus on how to advertise certain specials; his pictures have to have meaningful words and good lighting to display his talents. He puts a lot of effort into portraying a clean and safe place to get tattoos done. Its an image he has worked hard to maintain and perfect. This all portrays a rhetorical sensitivity that Gomez has about his idea of a great tattoo parlor. Gomez taught me a lot about image. I always understood that I wanted a comfortable, clean place for my Tattoo parlor one day but the detail is behind the curtains too. The equipment Gomez has spent a good amount of money on is top of the line machines designed to clean and sanitize all the tattooing equipment that is exposed to possible pathogens. The job of cleaning the equipment is one that takes full attention and detail. Updating these machines is one that takes even more skill. There is an abundance of tattoo equipment out there that is scrapping metal. It is important for business owners of any company to keep themselves updated on the new technology coming out each year and be able to sift out the bunk companies selling junk equipment. Not doing so could be at the cost of the shops reputation, according to Gomez.

is an important source for me personally, because I believe it essential to know about tattoo removal in case it is something that will be recommended to a customer who wants a cover up done on a previously inked tattoo. Tomalex, Micheal. Starting a Tattoo Business. Basic Things to Consider. www.ezinarticles.com, N.D. Web. 28 Oct 2013. Micheal Tomalex discusses three major aspects in his article Starting a Tattoo Business: Basic Things to Consider Tattoo artists, equipment, and location are key components to owning a successful tattoo business according to Micheal Tomalex. Tattoo artist are the main marketer for a tattoo parlor. Tomalex believes an artist must be willing to constantly expand his talents and stay up to date on the fads of the tattoo industry. Tattoo parlors equipment will be the most costly element of the business. Equipment must be in top condition if not top of the line says Tomalex. The final ingredient of a successful Tattoo business is location. Tomalex paraphrases the popular businessman quote that the most important aspect of any business is location, location, and location. A person starting a Tattoo business will want to consider a place that has heavy foot traffic, accessibility, and within range of other parlors. The rhetorical situation of Micheal Tomalexs article was one that had more of a common sense appeal then statistic facts about tattoo businesses. The information was very general leaving the impression that this article would be read and appreciated mostly by people skirting around the idea of owning a tattoo business rather being very serious about it. The pathos of this article was one for general reading and not meant to spark any new ideas or concepts of the business of permanent ink.

I enjoyed reading this article but only because I felt validation in the things I already believe about owning a Tattoo business. I do not feel as though I gained any knew knowledge from reading this article nor felt any objection to what I read. This led me to believe it was constructed to serve this very purpose, easy reading for someone interested in owning a tattoo parlor. There are many aspects of the tattoo industry that are not covered here. For instance, what it takes to become a tattoo artist and/or tattoo removal specialist. Each state has their own laws about tattoos. With the growing trend of tattoos, one can only assume new laws will pass restricting the procedures of become a tattoo artist in a licensed tattoo shop. If considering to become a tattoo artist, one will have to learn to shuffle through the money making scams of online licenses and find a suitable artist to take up an apprenticeship, at which point you will have to have recommendation and a portfolio with which an experienced artist can decide whether or not he would like to take you under his wing and into his shop. It has become very clear to me that writing is a huge part of the tattoo industry. I had not considered this in my approach to eventually owning a shop of my own until after learning the many things I did about writing in my field.
